Chapter 1: To Stay Alive, I Gave Up

“Su Junmo, if you’re selling yourself, then don’t develop real feelings. Remember your identity. You’re just a substitute.”

Shen Wanwan tapped Su Junmo’s face with the check in her hand.

Having just finished filming, she wore a fiery red dress that accentuated her figure, the corners of her eyes lifted slightly, filled with naked disdain.

Su Junmo gave a bitter smile. Humiliation was written all over his face as he reached out to take the 1 million yuan check.

Shen Wanwan deliberately loosened her fingers, letting the check fall onto the wool carpet. Then she lifted her pale, slender foot and stepped on it.

She studied the humiliation on his face with clear enjoyment.

Su Junmo bent down on one knee, staring at the check. He lowered his head, hiding the slight upward curl at the corner of his lips.

He gently grasped Shen Wanwan’s soft, fair ankle and moved her foot away from the money. Then he picked up her red-soled high heels from the side and carefully helped her put them on. “I understand, Wanwan. You’ve just finished filming. You must be tired. I called the driver. You should head back early and get some rest.”

Shen Wanwan’s ideal man was the gentle type, and she had no resistance to men like that.

Su Junmo deliberately softened his voice, his expression obedient and compliant.

Shen Wanwan froze for a moment, then sneered, “Su Junmo, have you no shame?”

After being humiliated like that, he was still speaking so gently.

Su Junmo paused briefly, then quickly put on a troubled expression and recited the line he had long memorized. “I’m only like this with you…”

Shen Wanwan frowned in annoyance, muttering that he was troublesome, yet her ears felt slightly warm.

She turned with a huff, grabbed his tie, and dragged him downstairs all the way to the car.

Throughout the entire process, Su Junmo remained submissive.

From time to time he frowned slightly, his eyes reddening as if from humiliation.

Shen Wanwan liked men who carried themselves with false pride like this.

After straightening up, Su Junmo stood beside the car, looking at her gently.

Just as the car was about to start, Shen Wanwan pinched his cheek hard, leaving a red mark before she was satisfied. “Come to my villa this weekend. And let me warn you again. Don’t fall for me. The day you develop feelings for me is the day you leave. You will always just be Song Yuan’s substitute.”

“I… understand…”

Su Junmo had no idea where she got such strength every day. She was practically disfiguring him.

Relax. In their line of work, falling in love with a patron was pure stupidity.

Seeing him endure the pain, Shen Wanwan felt a strange ripple in her heart, a faint trace of bitterness. “Driver, start the car.”

As the vehicle gradually disappeared into the distance, the standard professional gentle smile on Su Junmo’s face instantly vanished.

He pulled a disposable red eye drop bottle from his pocket and tossed it into the trash.

Thank goodness for artificial tears. Otherwise, what grown man could act so pitiful on cue?

Su Junmo glanced at the 1 million yuan check in his hand and flicked it lightly with his finger.

Money from the rich really was easy to earn.

They always shouted that they only wanted love, not money.

The money they didn’t want, Su Junmo wanted.

These evil capitalists. Sooner or later, he would crush them all.

Shen Wanwan was a household-name top-tier celebrity. Her family background was powerful. Her father was involved in politics, and her mother was the CEO of an entertainment company.

Once, when she came to his university to film on location, she noticed that Su Junmo resembled her ideal man. She immediately had her agent find him and offered him a sponsorship contract.

1 million yuan per year, and any gifts given during the period would not be reclaimed.

Whether it was satisfying or not, he wouldn’t say. But earning a million yuan annually was real.

As a substitute, he was professional.

As a devoted lapdog, he was top-tier.

In this day and age, as long as you made money, there was nothing to be ashamed of.

Su Junmo carefully folded the check. This was hard-earned money.

He had originally thought Shen Wanwan wouldn’t renew the contract. After all, she had said that her ideal man was unique in her heart.

She also said that he was a famous painter who had gone abroad to pursue art.

Shen Wanwan claimed that Su Junmo resembled him by thirty percent, and that alone was already his blessing.

Whenever Su Junmo had no classes, Shen Wanwan hired several renowned painters to teach him.

She required him to paint outstanding works just like her ideal man.

Su Junmo almost lost it.

Fine. Fine. The rich were truly willful.

He would paint. He would paint.

He painted until he felt like he was losing his mind.

What Shen Wanwan loved most was teasing him endlessly while he painted, brushing against him deliberately.

At times like that, Su Junmo had to refuse her righteously, showing an obsession with art.

Fine. He was a real man. He could endure.

Shen Wanwan definitely had some peculiar fetish.

This client was secured.

After returning to school, Su Junmo opened a spreadsheet on his computer and placed a checkmark next to Shen Wanwan’s name.

Everyone in that spreadsheet was his client.

Each client’s profession, temperament, and preferences were recorded in detail.

In their line of work, to put it nicely, they were psychological consultants, providing emotional value to others.

To put it bluntly, they were lapdogs.

Su Junmo didn’t care what others called him.

He believed in loving whatever job he did.

If he did something, he would do it the best.

Of course, making money was the real reason. He needed money. A lot of money.

For money, he had done many things, but what he had gathered still wasn’t enough.

He needed more.

Sitting on the stool, Su Junmo calculated his current savings and let out a faint bitter smile. It had already exceeded 10 million yuan.

Still not enough. He needed at least another 10 million yuan.

He wanted to live longer. There were still things he needed to accomplish.

Su Junmo pressed a hand against his chest. Even for the sake of this heart, he had to live longer.

He went to the bank and exchanged the check for cash. To avoid drawing attention, he carried a black backpack.

After withdrawing the money, Su Junmo took the subway to the outskirts of Beijing. There was a small orphanage there.

As soon as he entered, a little girl in a dirty white dress ran toward him with a bright smile and threw herself into his arms.

She was adorable, though she limped slightly on her left foot.

Su Junmo quickly scooped up the soft little Su Xiaoyu and gently pinched her cheek. “Has little sister missed big brother? You’ve gained weight. Have you been taking your medicine properly? Have you been listening to Grandma Director?”

Su Xiaoyu shyly burrowed into his arms. Her big eyes blinked as she wrapped her small arms around his neck. “Big brother, Xiaoyu has been taking her medicine. I missed big brother. Xiaoyu is the most obedient child in the orphanage. Getting injections doesn’t hurt at all.”

Su Junmo rubbed her head and put her down.

Several older children also came out to greet him. “Big brother hasn’t come back for a long time. Sister Xiaoyi hasn’t come back either. Big brother, when will Sister Xiaoyi return?”

The gap-toothed little boy Zhou Cheng circled around Su Junmo, looking for Sister Xiaoyi.

Su Junmo swallowed dryly, his heart aching. “I brought you some tasty snacks today. I’ll let Xiaoyu hand them out.”

He changed the subject and took out a bag of candy.

The children cheered and ran off with the sweets.

Grandma Director came out from behind, leaning on her cane. “Junmo, you’ve come to see the children?”

Su Junmo smiled and nodded, then handed her the backpack. “Use it for Xiaoyu’s treatment, and for the other children too. If they need hospitalization, admit them. We can’t delay any longer.”

Grandma Director opened the backpack. The moment she saw the money, her voice choked. “Junmo, where did this money come from? Don’t do anything bad… Everyone has their own fate…”

Su Junmo smiled faintly. “I’m acting in films now. I earn quite a lot. Besides, curing these children was Xiaoyi’s wish. I’m helping her fulfill it. I owe her that.”

Most of the children in the orphanage had been abandoned by their parents. Almost all of them carried illnesses of some kind. The severe cases were cancer. Some had physical disabilities.

As long as he earned another 10 million yuan, they could all be treated.

On the way back, Su Junmo calculated silently. Another 10 million yuan. At most two years, at least one year. Soon. Very soon.
