Chapter 8: Severing Karma

The moon hung high in the clear sky. Ling Yun was still lying on the bamboo chair, his chest rising and falling slightly—clearly, he was sleeping soundly. Whether in reincarnation or in this present life, Ling Yun had always been running around for countless matters. It was rare for him to enjoy such peaceful rest.

Suddenly, his eyelashes quivered, and his eyes slowly opened. For a brief moment, it was as if the endless birth and destruction of the universe flowed through his gaze. An invisible aura made the surrounding plants subconsciously lean toward him. But the sensation only lasted an instant before vanishing like smoke, as if it had all been a fleeting illusion.

“It’s been a long time since I rested like this.” Ling Yun stretched his limbs, and a series of crisp cracking sounds echoed from his body. Though he was methodically dispersing his cultivation, he showed none of the fatigue typical of others in the same situation. Instead, after a rare moment of rest without distractions, he seemed more energetic than ever.

“Ling Yun, you have no idea. In just this short time, your intention to leave the mountain has already spread throughout the entire Heavenly Dao Sect!” Yun Xi returned from wandering the sect, wearing a satisfied expression like someone who had just indulged in the juiciest gossip.

After surpassing a certain threshold, Yun Xi was no longer bound to remain at Ling Yun’s side like other systems. She could freely roam the world in ways no one else could perceive.

“Looks like someone’s been in a real hurry,” Ling Yun nodded.

“No one expected that the ones most eager for your departure weren’t Yan Shan. He did have the thought, but hadn’t acted yet. It was your two junior sisters who started spreading it in secret!” Yun Xi curled into Ling Yun’s arms, finding a snug position.

“Seems like the fact that I’ve been deliberately blocking their contact with that disciple from the main peak lately has really upset them,” Ling Yun was clearly already prepared for this outcome.

“Tsk tsk, truly worthy of the title ‘Child of Destiny,’ to have them rushing into the flames like moths to fire,” Yun Xi said, shaking her head.

“You’ve seen things like this often, haven’t you?” Ling Yun looked up at the sky. “Come to think of it, tonight’s a full moon.”

“Yes, the night of the full moon, when Yin Qi is at its peak,” Yun Xi nodded. “Wait, don’t tell me you’re thinking…”

“Since it all coincides, I may as well settle everything at once. I’ll need a little help from you, Yun Xi,” Ling Yun said.

“Leave it to me.” Yun Xi’s body emitted a soft glow and transformed into a feathered robe that draped over Ling Yun.

Wearing the feathered robe, Ling Yun rose lightly and turned into a wisp of smoke, heading toward Master Xueyue’s cave residence. Master Xueyue’s residence was protected by a massive formation. When activated, not even the sect master of the Heavenly Dao Sect could forcefully enter. It was the height of summer, yet a thin layer of frost had unknowingly coated the grass and trees outside the cave.

The formation was powerful, but it couldn’t obstruct Ling Yun wrapped in Yun Xi’s feathered robe. He ignored the formation as if it didn’t exist and moved unhindered toward the place where Master Xueyue was in seclusion.

A terrifying chill howled within the cave. Even a sect elder would struggle to survive in such conditions. The source of this cold was none other than Master Xueyue herself. Her rapid cultivation progress came from her unique physique—the Mysterious Yin Body. Those with this constitution cultivated the path of Mysterious Yin at astonishing speed and could even fight across realms as if it were normal.

But as the saying goes, “pure yang cannot grow alone, pure yin cannot flourish on its own.” The greatest flaw of the Mysterious Yin Body was the inability to control the immense Yin energy within. The more one cultivated, the stronger this energy became, and if the bearer couldn’t control it, they would eventually be consumed by it.

Ling Yun was one of the few who had realized this. To help suppress the terrifying Yin energy within Master Xueyue, he had expended much effort. The best way to manage this energy was by using a strong Pure Yang force to counterbalance it. Not only could it suppress the destructive effects, it could even allow the cultivator to better control the Mysterious Yin.

The scene of Ling Yun’s study left in a hurry earlier was because he had received news of the appearance of Fire Spirit Pulp. Though Scarlet Flame Pills refined from Fire Spirit Pulp couldn’t fully neutralize such a vast Yin force, their balanced and gentle power could still provide Master Xueyue with a moment of relief—and buy Ling Yun more time.

Master Xueyue sat cross-legged on a jade bed, her complexion showing an unnatural paleness. The vast Mysterious Yin energy surged violently within her, almost overwhelming her control. But with the feathered robe shielding him, Ling Yun completely ignored the deadly cold and calmly stepped to her side. Once, he still held hopes for Master Xueyue, but now he had long since let go of any feelings between master and disciple.

A jade bottle appeared in Ling Yun’s hand—this was the last item remaining from the system space. The formation sealing the bottle shattered instantly, and a crimson pill floated slowly out.

This pill was surrounded by nine pill marks, radiating a soft light that effortlessly dispelled the chill around Ling Yun. Master Xueyue, entirely focused on suppressing the Mysterious Yin energy, failed to notice the changes beside her.

The Nine-Turn Pure Yang Pill—Ling Yun had found it in ancient texts and confirmed it as the most suitable pill for neutralizing the Mysterious Yin energy. Unfortunately, after its creation, he had never returned it to her. So when he discovered it was the last item left in the system space, he had called it fate.

Without hesitation, Ling Yun waved his hand and sent the priceless pill toward Master Xueyue. The Nine-Turn Pure Yang Pill turned into a stream of light and slowly merged into her body, instantly suppressing the turbulent Yin energy within her.

This was the most mystical aspect of the Nine-Turn Pure Yang Pill. It didn’t neutralize all the Yin energy at once, but rather balanced it gently over time. This not only soothed the destructive effects on the body, but also allowed the cultivator to gradually master the energy in harmony.

“In the past, Master saved my life from the snow and ice. Today, I repay that debt by resolving the crisis of your Mysterious Yin Body with a Pure Yang Pill. From this moment on, there is no more karma between us.” Ling Yun performed a disciple’s bow toward Master Xueyue, then turned and vanished into the void with the help of the feathered robe.

At the moment Ling Yun turned away, a sound like something shattering echoed through the heavens—the karmic bond between Ling Yun and Master Xueyue had been completely severed.

Sensing something, Master Xueyue’s consciousness stirred. Her eyes opened slightly in a daze, only to glimpse a fading figure vanishing completely before her.
