Chapter 10: The Maternity Ward and the Rebirth Project

Luo Chenxuan looked at the silent Yue Xi beside him.

At this moment, Yue Xi was furious, her fists clenched tightly, fingernails digging into her palms.

Luo Chenxuan stepped in front of her. “So what? Doesn’t that just mean Yue Xi is amazing?”

Lie Gou was amused by his naïve remark. “Amazing? You think this inhumane experiment is like a final exam? And you call that amazing? Hahaha…”

Lie Quan added calmly, “Do you know why she’s so silent?”

Luo Chenxuan slowly turned his head. Yue Xi had her head down, gently biting her lip, trembling slightly. Her voice was barely audible, “Stop… talking…”

Lie Gou jumped in immediately, “Because… her older sister was in the same maternity ward. Phase 3 of the Rebirth Project. Among the hundred children in the ward, there was a pair of sisters. The younger one was Yue Xi, and the elder was Yue—”

Before the final word could come out, Yue Xi suddenly screamed, “Shut up!” 

Then, like she’d lost all reason, she leapt at him. 

Caught off guard, Lie Gou raised an arm to block, while Lie Quan seized the opportunity to restrain Luo Chenxuan from behind. Yue Xi’s kick landed squarely and powerfully on Lie Gou’s arm.

It was stronger than any of her previous strikes. Lie Gou staggered back, clutching his arm in pain. 

Luo Chenxuan raised his elbow to fight back against Lie Quan, but Lie Quan didn’t give him the chance, locking his arm immediately.

Yue Xi, completely losing control, launched a flurry of punches like a storm against Lie Gou, leaving him unable to fight back.

Just then, a figure appeared behind her like a ghost. A knifehand strike landed squarely on her neck. She collapsed, unconscious.

The figure stepped forward into the light—a tall man in black wearing a lion-shaped mask. It was Shimian Xiong, one of Gui Hu’s four Masked Kings.

The Twin Dogs immediately dropped to one knee in deference. 

Luo Chenxuan was released, but he didn’t care. 

He rushed to Yue Xi and held her tightly. “She just fainted,” Shimian Xiong said in a deep voice, looking at him.

“Boss, why are you here?” Lie Quan asked nervously.

“Logically speaking, it shouldn’t take three days to catch one ordinary student, right?”

“Y-Yes, sir.”

“It’s been three days since you left. You still haven’t caught him. Yesterday, I arrived with Lie Gou because I feared you would fail. Judging by what I see, it’s lucky I did.”

Lie Quan turned toward Lie Gou, who kept his head down and said nothing.

“I told him not to inform you. The fewer who know about my absence, the better. The target of this mission is extremely important. He’s the one master has been searching for.”

The Twin Dogs froze, finally understanding why the mission had been so rushed, with no preparation. Why the timeline had been cut short, why they were under pressure to bring the target back unharmed—or face punishment.

Lie Quan now recalled that earlier attack at Luo Chenxuan’s home. Cold sweat trickled down his back. Luckily, only he knew about that.

“Alright. Bring him back.”

Lie Quan stepped forward, unsure where to grab, afraid he’d hurt Luo Chenxuan.

Luo Chenxuan watched this confused man fumbling around, then slowly picked up Yue Xi in his arms and took a step back.

“Hey!” Lie Quan reached out but caught nothing.

“What are you doing?” Shimian Xiong turned and glared at him.

Noticing Lie Quan’s embarrassment, Shimian Xiong sighed quietly. Should I just send him back home?

“He’s a person, not porcelain. He won’t break if you grab him!”

Lie Gou stepped forward. “Let me.” He reached out and grabbed Luo Chenxuan.

The moment Lie Gou touched him, Luo Chenxuan cried out, “Ow ow ow!”

Lie Gou got scared and immediately let go.

Luo Chenxuan smiled faintly and took a step back. As soon as Lie Gou raised his hand again, Luo Chenxuan yelped, “Ow!” 

Lie Gou froze, hand stuck in mid-air, while Luo Chenxuan kept slowly inching backward.

“No need to go back to Xiayu City…” Shimian Xiong said coldly.

The Twin Dogs turned in shock.

“Because if he retreats any further, he’ll be home! None of us will need to go back. Let’s just pick a nice scenic spot to die right here.”

“Then I want that place back there. The view was great!” Lie Gou excitedly pointed to where they had just fought.

“You pick—you…” Shimian Xiong could no longer hold in his anger. He raised his hand and slapped Lie Gou’s head, then grabbed Luo Chenxuan himself.

“Come with me now. Otherwise, we can’t guarantee your lady friend’s safety.”

Luo Chenxuan looked down at the unconscious Yue Xi in his arms. He had no choice. He understood there was no room to bargain and followed obediently.

They all boarded a car. Yue Xi was still leaning weakly against Luo Chenxuan’s shoulder. Luo Chenxuan was deep in thought, trying to come up with a plan. 

At this rate, he was about to be taken away. He had just started school, and next Monday was the campus event. Now his life seemed completely uncertain.

He sighed softly, touching his waist. “I hope you’re still with me…”

Lie Gou sat in the back with him and turned his head away in silence.

Midway, Yue Xi woke up and tried to cause a scene, but realizing it could cost everyone their lives, she sat still, face fuming.

“Why the hell did you get mixed up with these iron bastards?” Yue Xi snapped.

“I… I have no idea either,” Luo Chenxuan said helplessly.

“So where are we going now??”

“Xiayu City,” Shimian Xiong said. “We’re heading back overnight. This is urgent.”

“Then why are you taking me too?!”

“You’re the best witness we have to explain why it took so long to catch him.”

“I have other things to do!”

“If needed, you may call home and let them know you won’t be coming back for dinner,” Shimian Xiong said coldly.

Yue Xi was speechless. “Do you think this is just about missing dinner?”

“Um, may I ask… what did I do to offend… your boss?”

“You tell us. Our boss wants to see you. Surveillance on you began a long time ago.”

“Who even is this boss? I don’t remember having anything to do with any boss…”

Yue Xi propped her cheek on her hand. “You don’t even know who they are, let alone their boss. Xiayu City is governed by Gui Hu. He unified the city and ensured the safety of ordinary people.”

“Sounds like a decent guy… but I’ve never been to Xiayu City. How could I know her?”

“We just follow orders. Nothing else matters. Simple as that.”

Luo Chenxuan sighed. “Maybe I should just blow up with these iron freaks and get it over with.”

“Hey—no, I still want to live. But Yue Xi, what’s with your sudden savage personality?”

Yue Xi gritted her teeth. “Because these bastards investigated me. My background should be top secret. There’s no way they could’ve found out.”

Lie Gou looked smug. “That kind of info is easy for us. We dug it up without a sweat.”

Yue Xi glared. “Impossible! The experiment details are classified at a national level! You shouldn’t know a thing!”

Lie Gou was thrilled by her reaction, getting more excited the more provoked she became.

“It’s simple~ because one of our boss’s four Masked Kings—Master Shimian Tu—is a newborn from Phase 4 of the Rebirth Project!”

The car fell silent.

Shimian Xiong’s mind went blank when he heard that. He silently thought to himself, Maybe I should drive this car off a cliff and take this idiot with me… for the greater good.
