Chapter 7: We Must Draw the Line Now!

Uncle Fu stood at the gate of the Lin residence. Crates of heavy items were unloaded—these were Lin Xianhong’s personal belongings. Since Ning Que had decided to repudiate her, things had to be made absolutely clear. Whatever belonged to her, Ning Que would not keep even a single item. And as for anything from Prince Ning’s Mansion—she should not think of taking any of it with her.

At that moment, a few passersby had gathered in front of the Lin residence. Seeing Uncle Fu, they all wore expressions as if watching a good show. Who in Chang’an didn’t know about the drama in Prince Ning’s Mansion? The dignified Heir Apparent of Prince Ning, yet utterly devoted in love. What a pity…

The one you love most often hurts you the deepest.

Lin Xianhong had secretly aborted her child to save Gu Yuan, completely disregarding the bloodline and honor of Prince Ning’s Mansion.

“I bet anything, this is him sending gifts to beg forgiveness again.”

“Isn’t that obvious?”

“How many times has this happened over the years?”

“Apologies change, but the tricks stay the same!”

“Haha, exactly.”

And it wasn’t just the passersby—even the Lin family’s servants looked on with mocking faces. They were the very definition of bullies who relied on their masters’ status. It was true Lin Xianhong had married above her station. But Ning Que, being a romantic fool, had even treated these servants with courtesy. But they were shameless—treat them well and they’d forget their place. Mere servants, daring to act unruly toward the Heir Apparent!

Uncle Fu swept his cold gaze across them, committing each face to memory.

Finally, the gates of the Lin residence opened. Lin Jiang walked out slowly, looking down at Uncle Fu and the others from above.

“What are you doing here now? Hasn’t the Heir Apparent already decided to repudiate his wife? My Lin family wouldn’t dare climb high to match your noble house. Take all of this back—we won’t accept it. We wouldn’t want people gossiping that we’re trying to take advantage of Prince Ning’s Mansion.”

Lin Jiang might not hold a high official post, but he was an old hand in the bureaucracy. This was a classic move—playing the victim while trying to benefit from it. He was trying to make money without lifting a finger. This wasn’t the first time he’d done it either. Everything he had now came from leveraging his late wife’s power. But he had secretly taken in a mistress and caused his wife’s death—he was experienced in this kind of thing.

Lin Xianhong returning to her parents’ home wasn’t new either. The last time she’d been drugged and spent a night with Ning Que, she’d woken up and immediately taken a carriage back. At first, Ning Que had been stubborn, but within three days, he came humbly to apologize—bearing expensive gifts.

Now here they were again, weren’t they?

Still, they needed to press a little harder this time. Otherwise, how would they continue controlling Ning Que in the future?

As the saying goes: a starving camel is still bigger than a horse.

Ning Que was still the Heir Apparent of Prince Ning, and he had some talent for business—like that brothel Heaven on Earth, for example. And now he dared to declare a divorce? If they didn’t give him a lesson, he’d forget his place!

…

“Lin family head, there’s a misunderstanding. These are all Miss Lin Xianhong’s personal belongings,” Uncle Fu said with a blank expression. So far, things hadn’t turned ugly. No matter how much Prince Ning’s Mansion had declined, it was still the household of a royal prince of Great Feng. There was no need to stoop to arguing with a small family like the Lins on the street. The Lins were used to being shameless. Their reputation in Chang’an was already bad. Prince Ning’s Mansion could not afford such disgrace.

Besides, Ning Que had already said it himself—back when he got married, he had invited the nobles of Chang’an to a grand banquet with hundreds of tables. Now that he was repudiating his wife, it would be done just as openly.

He wanted the entire city to know—he and Lin Xianhong were finished!

But Lin Jiang didn’t hear the message beneath the words. Still full of confidence, he waved his sleeve and said, “There’s no need to linger at our gate. We don’t dare accept His Highness’s temper. All this over a trivial matter, and now you bring gifts? If the Heir Apparent wants to take back his words, let him come in person and speak clearly. Otherwise, people will say we’re clinging to his house, taking advantage of Prince Ning’s Mansion.”

Though he spoke as if firm, everything he said was sarcasm—classic fake humility.

“Haha! Now this is going to be interesting!”

“You think the Heir Apparent will come himself?”

“He’s definitely coming!”

“Didn’t he buy up all the peach blossoms in town last time?”

“Last year he even bought several shops!”

“Tsk tsk… That man is truly a hopeless romantic!”

The passersby, as usual, found this entertaining. Most of them were ordinary people, and Ning Que was a noble prince’s heir. Mocking people like him made them feel better about their own lives.

Uncle Fu frowned but chuckled in disbelief. Did they really think the Heir Apparent would keep putting up with everything?

Everyone has a limit.

Ning Que had tolerated Lin Xianhong because she was his wife—and because she fulfilled the Princess Consort’s final wish. She had finally become pregnant, yet she secretly aborted the child—just to save Gu Yuan, the white moonlight she couldn’t forget!

What man could endure that?

“Lin family head, you’re mistaken. These are all Miss Lin Xianhong’s personal items. Since the Heir Apparent has decided to repudiate her, he will not go back on it. Today, we are here to settle things clearly. Everything belonging to her is here. Please confirm whether anything is missing.”

The smile on Lin Jiang’s face gradually disappeared, replaced by shock.

“What did you say?”

Uncle Fu didn’t bother replying. He clapped his hands, and the servants opened the crates—inside were Lin Xianhong’s cosmetics, robes, skirts, even her bronze mirror used for dressing.

“Damn, the Heir Apparent is serious this time!”

“Good grief, he’s cutting ties for real!”

“He’s throwing the Lin girl out of his house!”

“Tsk tsk, this is getting interesting…”

“…”

“What did you say?!”

At that moment, Lin Qinghuan charged out, a sword at her waist and fury on her face.

“What do you mean by this?”

“Better to settle things cleanly,” Uncle Fu said with calm dignity, completely unshaken by her.

She was another ungrateful white-eyed wolf! Ning Que had done so much for her—gone to great lengths to get her into the Six Arts Academy. Yet in the end, she didn’t even acknowledge him. Married for years, and she had never once called him ‘brother-in-law.’

“In that case, I’ll take my leave now. If there’s anything missing, feel free to come to Prince Ning’s Mansion to sort it out.” Uncle Fu cupped his hands and didn’t bother responding to Lin Qinghuan’s tantrum. He boarded the carriage and left with the others.

“What are you all staring at? Scram!” Lin Qinghuan shouted, her face flushed red.

The onlookers knew her reputation and didn’t bother arguing. They quickly dispersed.

“This… this…” Lin Jiang’s face filled with worry. “He’s not seriously going to repudiate her, is he?”

“Impossible! Absolutely impossible!” Lin Qinghuan refused to believe it. But then something occurred to her.

“I get it now! I can’t believe how sneaky Ning Que is this time. He’s trying to scare us! He just wants to make us admit fault!”

She glared at the departing carriage in the distance.

“A dignified man, yet so calculating. Father, look at this—every single item accounted for. So petty, so lacking in grace. He’s nothing compared to General Gu Yuan!”

Gritting her teeth, Lin Qinghuan flicked her sleeve and said angrily, “Father, don’t get involved. He thinks sending a steward with a show of force will make us apologize? I don’t understand what he’s even mad about! My Second Sister is still sick in bed, and he doesn’t even care. We can’t let this slide. I’m going to find him right now—I’m going to scold him until he wakes up!”
