Chapter 1: Director Shen Has Been Reborn.

August 2025. Chongyang County, Sichuan Province. The flood season remained under a continuous red alert.

Shen Weiyue, Deputy Director of the Emergency Management Bureau, was commanding from the front lines. At this moment, he was riding with his driver toward the mountainous frontline to supervise flood control work.

“Xiao Ji, have all the tourists at Longmen Mountain Scenic Area been evacuated? Remind the town to closely monitor independent travelers who drove here. With the hot weather and shallow water, they especially like to camp on the Danxi Riverbed…”

“Don’t worry, Director Shen. The town has been working around the clock lately. Key checkpoints all have personnel stationed, and everyone on the riverbed has already been cleared out.”

“That’s good. Look at this damned weather—one second it’s blazing sunshine, the next it’s overcast. It’s probably already pouring at the mountain top. I can even hear the rumbling. I’m afraid a flash flood might come.”

Shen Weiyue frowned as he looked out the car window. Suddenly, a white figure flashed across his sight, and his heart jolted.

“Stop the car! There’s someone down there.”

“Screech—”

The car braked sharply. Before it had even come to a full stop, Shen Weiyue had already rushed out.

About ten meters below the roadside, on the riverbed, there really was a little boy, still bent over, digging in the sand.

Following the sound upstream, Shen Weiyue’s gaze shifted—and his pupils shrank. The once-clear water had already turned muddy. A surge of debris, tangled with deadwood and sludge, was roaring down at terrifying speed.

The flash flood had truly arrived.

“Quick, save him!”

While the driver was still stunned, Shen Weiyue had already leapt down onto the riverbed, scooped up the terrified boy, and sprinted desperately toward the bank.

“Director Shen, give me your hand, I’ll pull you up.”

“Get the child up first…”

Before his words even finished, the massive torrent crashed down, slamming into Shen Weiyue and knocking him straight into the water.

“Director Shen!”

“Don’t come down! Take the child up and get away from the riverbank…”

“Bang!”

Shen Weiyue choked on several mouthfuls of muddy water. The back of his head smashed violently against a rock, and everything went black.

…

March 2009. Ling Shan County No.1 High School, Sichuan Province.

The setting sun stretched long shadows across the campus, tugging at the edge of the evening glow, scattering warm colors over the tender green leaves atop the trees. The evening breeze lifted the hem of youth, and spring unfolded in perfect clarity.

Outside the window, life thrived, everything bursting with vitality. Inside the classroom, however, the air was heavy, suffocatingly silent.

Every student in Class 6, Senior Year 3, stared fixedly at their homeroom teacher, Han Changming. His face was dark as he raised the book in his hand and slammed it down.

“Bang!”

The loud crack landed squarely on Shen Weiyue’s head, jolting his dormant consciousness awake.

“One hundred days. Only one hundred days left, and you’re still sleeping, still sleeping! Completely hopeless…”

Shen Weiyue rubbed the back of his slightly aching head and opened his eyes groggily. The first thing he saw was Han Changming’s expression of frustrated disappointment, and behind him, the glaring countdown to the college entrance exam.

His eyes widened in shock. Almost instinctively, he muttered, “Damn it… where the hell did I end up?”

“Where did you end up? Shen Weiyue, go stand at the back of the classroom for this period. Wake yourself up properly and figure out exactly where you are.”

“Hm?”

Shen Weiyue’s voice carried an unconscious authority as he let out that questioning sound.

“What are you standing there for? Get moving!” Han Changming exploded in anger. “Did you sleep yourself stupid? Do you even remember your own name?”

“Hahaha…”

The classroom erupted in laughter, startling the sparrows on the willow branches outside into a frantic flutter.

Suppressing the turmoil in his heart, Shen Weiyue silently grabbed a book from his desk and strode to the back of the classroom.

“Quiet!” Han Changming roared. “What are you laughing at? What right do you have to laugh? Do you think only Shen Weiyue deserves to be scolded?”

“The test results from the day before yesterday are out. Our Class 6 ranks last in average score among the six advanced classes. This is a complete disgrace!”

“This time it’s not just Shen Weiyue dragging us down. Some of you—very few of you—have seen a very obvious decline in your grades recently. You know exactly who I’m talking about.”

“And you still have the mood to laugh? I can’t laugh. My tears are swirling inside my stomach. With results like this, how are you going to face the college entrance exam?”

“As the saying goes, even a pig learns to turn around after being taught three times. Are you worse than pigs?”

Han Changming slapped the podium, his voice full of grief and anger. No one in the class dared to laugh anymore.

Shen Weiyue looked at this scene, as if in a dream. The images before his eyes gradually became vivid and real.

He pinched his thigh hard several times. The pain confirmed his suspicion, and a strange, almost absurd smile slowly spread across his face.

Han Changming happened to catch that expression, and his fury only deepened.

“Shen Weiyue, you still dare to smile? Then stand for three periods. Don’t sit until evening self-study ends.”

…

Director Shen obediently stood through three full periods.

After evening self-study ended, he walked out of the school gate in silence. His only close friend, Ye Lingtao, followed beside him, chattering nonstop.

Shen Weiyue said nothing, simply walking forward.

“Yue Buqun, not bad. You actually went head-on against Old Demon Han. That’s impressive.”

“I’m talking to you, Yue Buqun. Since when did you get so bold?”

“Sect Master Yue, say something, will you…”

Ye Lingtao kept rambling shamelessly. Shen Weiyue’s patience wore thin, and he said in a low voice, “If you call me Yue Buqun again, I’ll castrate you.”

“It’s not just me. Everyone calls you that. Who told you to be so out of place?”

Ye Lingtao spoke with confidence, “You could’ve picked any name, but you just had to have ‘Yue’ in it. And you don’t fit in at all. If you’re not Yue Buqun, then who is?”

“Shut up. The fork’s here. Get lost.”

“Brother Yue, pull yourself together. Tomorrow morning Old Demon Han is going to talk to you alone. Time to practice the Sunflower Manual, whoosh whoosh whoosh…”

“Idiot.”

Without turning back, Shen Weiyue raised a middle finger and turned left into a narrow alley.

Ye Lingtao assumed he had hit a sore spot and burst into laughter as he walked off in the opposite direction.

The two parted ways.

After weaving through several turns, Shen Weiyue soon arrived at the entrance of a small residential compound.

The gate was an old-style double iron door, topped with rusted spikes. One careless climb, and it could pierce straight through you.

A middle-aged female guard glanced at him as he entered but said nothing.

The buildings were prefabricated slab structures, six stories tall, with no elevators. The landlord had illegally added several makeshift rooms on the rooftop for rent. Shen Weiyue rented one of the small rooms, 300 yuan per month, no air conditioning.

Freezing in winter, scorching in summer—a perfect “blessed land.”

After getting home, Shen Weiyue tossed down his schoolbag and went straight to the bathroom to shower.

Standing under the stream, he held his breath for about thirty seconds, trying to recreate the suffocating sensation of drowning before he had lost consciousness. Then he opened his eyes.

He was still standing under the shower.

Alright. No more denial. He had truly been reborn.

In the mirror was a young, vibrant body. His hairline was full and dark, his face still slightly immature yet brimming with youthful energy—a pure, clean-cut high school boy.

“What the hell is this supposed to be?”

“I was already a deputy director. Thirty-four years old, the youngest in the whole county… and now I’m sent back here for what?”

“Is this a reward for saving someone? If so, I’d rather have won 5 million in the lottery.”

“Damn it. More than ten years of hard work, gone in an instant…”

Reluctance mixed with a trace of melancholy weighed on him.

Yet the warm water flowed over his firm muscles, sliding along his abdomen, soothing his restless mind.

After a while, Shen Weiyue seemed to remember something. He reached down, gave a squeeze, and suddenly broke into a wide grin.

Rejuvenated, strong, and in his prime… maybe this rebirth wasn’t such a loss after all.

“Hehe… second brother, welcome back.”

“I neglected you in my last life. My apologies.”
