Chapter 86: At the Banks of the Wei River, the Crescent Barrier!

“That’s good… that’s good.”

Chi Lingxiao murmured the same phrase twice, her eyes vacant.

Ignoring the puzzled look from the young disciple beside her, she turned to gaze in the direction of Zexu Peak.

She wondered how her junior brother was doing.

Had the demonic energy within him been suppressed?

It was all Lu Chen’s fault for refusing to save him!

How could he be so heartless?!

Without realizing it, Chi Lingxiao’s teeth clenched in anger once more.

Meanwhile, at Azure Sun Sect—

The suppression formation had been completely repaired, and for several days, the demonic abyss remained silent.

The entire sect was filled with joyous celebrations.

After the grand banquet—

Everyone began preparing in earnest for the upcoming Nine Suns Tournament next month.

Yet, during this time—

Bai Ningruo found herself unable to calm down.

Ever since she had heard Lu Chen’s words at the banquet, a deep unease had settled in her heart.

Lu Chen had never broken his word.

That meant—

He would not stay in Azure Sun Sect forever.

She did not know when he would leave—

But with each passing day—

She felt as if the time of his departure was drawing nearer.

This feeling was hard to describe.

It was a mix of emotions—

Longing.

Reluctance.

And an overwhelming sense of loss.

While everyone else was fully focused on their training—

She could only sit there, staring blankly into the distance.

“Miss Bai, is something troubling you?”

Lu Chen’s voice suddenly rang out, startling her.

She quickly gathered her thoughts.

“Senior Brother, why are you here?”

“Just taking a walk. Am I disturbing you?”

“Not at all. I just got here myself.”

Bai Ningruo smiled softly, gazing at Lu Chen.

The man before her was undeniably extraordinary.

His aura was cold and untouchable, like the moon—pure and brilliant, immune to taint.

Azure Sun Sect had tens of thousands of disciples—

But none could compare to Lu Chen’s presence.

He was the one and only true immortal in this world.

She could not understand—

What were those people in Mystic Spirit Holy Sect thinking?

How could they have forced Lu Chen to leave?!

Once again, Bai Ningruo felt indignant on Lu Chen’s behalf.

And so, the urge to make him stay rose within her once more.

“Senior Brother, I want to ask you something.”

“Go ahead.”

Bai Ningruo bit her lip, hesitation flickering across her face before she finally spoke.

“I want to know—what would it take for you to stay?”

Lu Chen paused for a moment.

Clearly, even he had not expected this question.

If it were a matter of cultivation, he would answer without hesitation.

But this?

How was he supposed to respond?

If he told her directly that nothing could make him stay—

Would that hurt her feelings?

But if he avoided the question—

That was not his way.

After thinking for a moment—

Lu Chen finally gave his answer.

“Like drifting clouds and wandering cranes—how could I be bound? I left Mystic Spirit Holy Sect because I refuse to be tied down by any sect.”

Hearing this—

A glimmer of hope flashed in Bai Ningruo’s eyes.

“Senior Brother, the Sect Master once said—if you were willing to join Azure Sun Sect, you wouldn’t have to remain in the sect. You would still be free.”

Lu Chen shook his head slightly.

That simple gesture—

Shattered all of Bai Ningruo’s hopes.

“…I understand. Senior Brother, I won’t bring this up again.”

“Good. I promised the Sect Master that I would remain here until the Nine Suns Tournament.”

“That’s wonderful! I—everyone will be happy to hear that.”

The moment she spoke, Bai Ningruo realized her mistake and quickly corrected herself.

“I mean, not just me—everyone will be happy.”

A rare smile appeared on Lu Chen’s face.

…

The moment Wen Keyao descended the mountain—

Her heartbeat quickened for no reason.

“Wei River Bank. Shili Slope…”

Lu Chen had mentioned these places before—

And she remembered them well!

Shili Slope was right near the Wei River.

And—

It was not far from her hometown!

Back then, Lu Chen had stopped her from returning home—

So she had missed the last chance to see her parents.

And now—

These places had been brought up again.

Wen Keyao had a feeling—

This journey to the Wei River would not be fruitless!

She did not want powerful artifacts.

She did not want great opportunities.

All she wanted—

Was answers.

All she wanted was some clues about her parents.

A child wishes to care for their parents, yet fate does not wait—this is a regret that can never be undone.

For years—

Wen Keyao had never spoken of it.

But deep inside, this regret had tormented her, pushing her to the brink of collapse.

She was unfilial.

She had been unable to care for her parents, unable even to see them one last time.

This time—

She would not let any opportunity slip away!

Wen Keyao took a deep breath and quickened her pace.

Three days later—

Wen Keyao finally arrived at the banks of the Wei River.

She was about to reach Shili Slope—

Yet suddenly, an inexplicable fear gripped her heart.

She wanted to hold onto hope—

But she was terrified of disappointment.

The closer one is to home, the more hesitant they become.

So this was what that meant.

It had been many years since she last saw this place.

The Wei River’s banks had changed greatly.

On the water—

Green boats drifted endlessly, rippling waves shimmering under the sunlight.

It was late summer, almost autumn—

Yet the scenery was just as vibrant as in spring.

The leaves were tinged with yellow.

Whenever the wind blew, they would flutter down like golden butterflies.

It was a breathtaking sight.

There were also far more people than in past years.

Yet—

Wen Keyao felt utterly lost.

People came and went—

But what was she even looking for?

The people she sought were long gone.

Had she come all this way—

Just to admire how the Wei River had changed over the years?

A heavy feeling settled in her chest.

Frustration crept in.

I should never have believed Lu Chen!

He’s a liar!

He made me regret for so many years—that is the only truth!

And now—

She had actually come all this way because of a few words from him?

How naïve and foolish!

Hmph!

Lu Chen—what exactly are you trying to do?!

Wen Keyao stood still, stopping beneath a large tree.

As she watched the people passing by—

She realized something.

She had nowhere to go.

…

The sunset faded behind the mountains.

Fewer and fewer people walked along the road.

Thin wisps of smoke curled from the chimneys of distant homes.

A warm scent of cooking filled the cool evening air.

An ache swelled in Wen Keyao’s heart—

A longing to cry.

It had been so many years since she had eaten her family’s cooking.

She stood motionless, lost in thought—

Until the moon rose high in the sky.

Only then did she slowly stand up.

“Lu Chen—I will never believe another word you say!”

Leaving behind those cold words—

Wen Keyao turned away.

With a single leap, she soared into the sky.

Beneath her feet—

A sharp sword gleamed in the moonlight.

Traveling by sword flight was much faster than walking.

The Nine Suns Tournament was approaching—

She needed to return as soon as possible.

Yet deep down—

A part of her still hesitated to leave.

Slowly—

She turned her head, just for one last look at the home she remembered.

And then—

“Ah—!”

Wen Keyao’s eyes widened in shock.

Even her breath became uneven.

At the banks of the Wei River—

In a certain spot—

A crescent-shaped barrier had suddenly appeared!

And that barrier—

Was unmistakably familiar!

Its shape was identical to the jade pendant hanging from her waist!

Not just the shape—

Even the patterns on it were an exact match!

It was as if her pendant had been enlarged into a massive formation!

Without hesitation—

Wen Keyao spun around and rushed straight for the barrier!
