Chapter 31: She Was the One Helping You Unconditionally All Along

To Liu Qingyue, Physician Xue’s words sounded like a bad joke.

What did he mean his spiritual root had a problem? His Master had personally confirmed that he possessed the rare Fire Elemental Root. Among all the disciples, he was chosen as a personal disciple for his outstanding talent—envied by even his senior and junior brothers.

And now this so-called “Divine Physician” claimed that his spiritual root was damaged?

Utter nonsense!

“I think you should stop calling yourself a Divine Physician,” Liu Qingyue snapped. “You’re just a fraud. If you can’t restore my spiritual energy , I’ll find someone who can. Don’t stand here talking nonsense!”

He struggled to rise from the bed, gritting his teeth through the pain, determined to find a way to regain his spiritual energy .

His Master was still in seclusion, so he’d have to find one of the elders. If that didn’t work, he’d go straight to the Sect Master. No matter what, he would recover his power—and his arm. And he would uncover the true culprit who stole it from him.

Even though Physician Xue said it wasn’t Bai Ying, in Liu Qingyue’s mind, there could be no one else.

He stormed out, wild thoughts swirling in his head, the only thing keeping him from falling apart completely.

Physician Xue looked at him helplessly and sighed deeply. Then, stepping forward, he grabbed Liu Qingyue’s wrist.

“If you don’t believe me,” he said, “I’ll help you examine your spiritual root myself.”

He formed a hand seal and channeled a stream of spiritual energy directly into Liu Qingyue’s body. Blades of energy surged into his dantian.

“It’s done. Try now.”

He had temporarily repaired Liu Qingyue’s spiritual root enough for him to sense it.

Though reluctant, Liu Qingyue obeyed and probed inward.

But the moment he sensed the state of his spiritual root, his expression changed drastically—turning paler and paler until it became ashen gray.

“How… how could this be?”

His root was indeed the Fire Elemental Root, but it was riddled with holes, crumbling like worm-eaten wood. It was fractured, collapsing from the inside.

He looked up, dazed, voice trembling.

“But… wasn’t Bai Ying the one with a broken spiritual root?”

Physician Xue rolled his eyes and sighed. “Didn’t I just tell you? Bai Ying’s spiritual root has no problem. The one with the broken root… is you.”

“But I… I was the one helping Bai Ying restore hers. I even—” Liu Qingyue was rambling, trying to make sense of everything. “I even gave her my spiritual energy…”

“Then let me ask you,” Physician Xue interrupted, “after you transferred energy to her, how did she seem? Was she refreshed? Or exhausted?”

Liu Qingyue froze. His already pale face turned ghostly.

He had to admit—after every energy transfer, Bai Ying always looked utterly exhausted. While he had always left feeling refreshed, as if she had helped him.

“You get it now?” Physician Xue asked coldly. “Your spiritual root is broken. Bai Ying’s is fine. And yet, she kept asking for your help, didn’t she? Why do you think that is?”

“It means she didn’t want you to know she was secretly helping you restore your root, idiot!”

“She… she was helping me?”

Liu Qingyue’s head felt like it was about to explode. He staggered back a step.

Physician Xue sighed sharply. “Yes! Who else? You think you were helping her with that tiny bit of spiritual energy? In truth, every drop she asked from you—was poured back into you!”

“She’s been unconditionally helping you this whole time!”

“Back when your root first shattered, Bai Ying came to me in tears. I examined you and told your Master there was no saving you. Your Master had already decided to let you leave the sect. It was Bai Ying—she knelt on the ground and begged him to give you one more chance.”

“That’s when Immortal Qin Hua came up with this plan—to find someone with the same fire root and similar cultivation level to help restore yours. The process required massive spiritual energy, aided by an enormous amount of spirit stones.”

“Do you know how harsh those conditions are? No one else would have agreed to it—except that foolish girl.”

“You know how your Master is. He’s obsessed with cultivation and ignores everything else. Those spirit stones? Bai Ying earned them herself. She sold her handmade treasure artifacts at the market, trying to cover your expenses.”

“She didn’t want to hurt your pride, so she asked all of us to keep quiet. She wanted to preserve your dignity.”

“She thought of everything for your sake. And you… actually thought she was trying to harm you?”

By the time Physician Xue finished, Liu Qingyue had collapsed to the floor.

His mind was in chaos, unable to accept the truth.

So… Bai Ying was the one helping him?

Was that why she worked so hard to earn spirit stones? Was that why she always went to the market to sell her artifacts?

He used to laugh at her, mocking her for being obsessed with money, for lowering herself like that. He had even joked about it behind her back…

Never knowing that every coin she earned was spent on him.

His eyes turned red, and sharp pain pierced his chest.

Then what had he done?

Why had he gone to such lengths to scheme against Bai Ying?

She was saving his life, and he had tried to ruin hers.

If it really had been Bai Ying with the broken spiritual root today, she would’ve ended up just like him—mauled, disabled.

Tears streamed down Liu Qingyue’s face. A deep, soul-piercing guilt overwhelmed him.

He sat there, frozen, unable to accept the weight of what he had done. His head throbbed violently.

Physician Xue glanced back at him, sighed, and left the room.

He had done all he could—saved Liu Qingyue’s life. What happened next was up to him.

Liu Qingyue didn’t know how long he sat there. The sky outside had long since darkened when he finally struggled to his feet.

He clutched his freshly bandaged wound and limped toward the door.

He wanted to see Bai Ying. He wanted to apologize in person.

But just before he reached her residence, Su Yu blocked his way.

Su Yu had heard everything from Physician Xue. His heart was filled with emotion, but he had come here for a reason.

Pale-faced, Liu Qingyue said, “Senior Brother, please let me through. I need to see Bai Ying. I have so much to tell her…”

He wanted to kneel before her and apologize properly.

He knew he’d gone too far. But maybe… maybe Bai Ying would forgive him.

Even if she didn’t, he would beg her until she did.

He was desperate to see her again.

But Su Yu’s voice came gently, filled with conflict: “Qingyue… have you forgotten the vow you made in the dueling arena?”

“You swore that you would never appear before Bai Ying again. If you do… the backlash from your heart demon will kill you.”
