After Transmigration, I Traded a Coin for a Peerless Wife and Conquered the Chaotic World - Chapter 18:
Chapter 18: Return to the Army
“My dear, you’re still no match for me,” Lin Feng said. “I’m a 3rd rank warrior. Even if you reach 1st rank, it’ll still be hard to beat me.”
But before he finished speaking, He Caiwei’s long sword had already lunged toward him.
This time, her execution of the first form “Cloud Contraction, Moon Shadow” had evolved. Instead of retreating like flowing clouds to lure the enemy, it was now a sudden forward thrust—like the moon’s shadow piercing through the clouds.
Sword techniques were meant to be fluid and adaptable. Lin Feng wasn’t surprised at all by her innovation. After all, Profound grade comprehension was something he couldn’t yet attain.
“My dear, I won’t be holding back!”
Lin Feng smirked as he grabbed his standard longsword. His powerful strikes merged with the blade, and his attacks became bold and unrestrained as he clashed directly with He Caiwei.
The moment blade met sword, Lin Feng realized her strength had increased again.
“Embrace the Moon!”
He Caiwei held her breath, fully focused. Her figure leapt into the air, her sword flashing like flowing silk. It tangled with Lin Feng’s blade relentlessly, giving him no room to breathe.
With her strength nearly breaking through to the 1st rank, the power of her swordplay was astonishing.
As the blade danced, nearby rocks and trees were caught in the wake—shattered stones flew, trunks were sliced, and even century-old trees were marked with sword scars.
If such force landed on an ordinary person, they’d be instantly decapitated.
“If I keep dodging, am I really going to lose to her today?”
That thought flickered through Lin Feng’s mind. His eyes narrowed as he caught a fleeting opening.
He suddenly unleashed his full 1st rank power. His speed soared, and his strikes became heavier.
Rather than clash directly, he used an advanced move—barehanded sword grab. With sharp precision, he struck her wrist and effortlessly disarmed her.
“You lost, my dear!” Lin Feng stepped back, a proud grin on his face.
He Caiwei puffed her cheeks in protest, glaring at him, “You said you wouldn’t use 3rd rank power! You cheated!”
Lin Feng laughed and wrapped her in his arms. “Who said I used 3rd rank power? That was clearly 1st rank.”
At those words, He Caiwei’s eyes widened even more.
She yanked her sword back and suddenly performed “Cloud Contraction, Moon Shadow”—but this time, she used it purely as a movement technique and dashed away without looking back.
“I’m ignoring you from now on! You never keep your word!”
In the blink of an eye, she was gone.
Watching her retreating figure, Lin Feng rubbed his nose, feeling a bit guilty.
If this kept up, by the time He Caiwei broke through to 1st rank, then 2nd or 3rd, his plan to firmly “uphold the husband’s authority” might be further and further out of reach.
He sighed… and chased after her.
…
Time passed quickly, and before they knew it, it was the last day of Lin Feng’s leave.
Early that morning, he bought a load of grain from the rice shop. Then he headed to the back mountain and chopped a large pile of firewood, which he neatly stacked outside the kitchen.
Once all the housework was done, it was time to go.
Lin Feng glanced at the closed door. He felt no blame—he knew how she must feel.
Inside, He Caiwei was also overwhelmed with reluctance.
Shouldering his travel bag, Lin Feng was just about to leave when the door creaked open behind him.
“Husband, I don’t want you to go! I don’t want you to leave!” He Caiwei rushed into his arms, her head rubbing against his chest.
When she looked up, her eyes were already brimming with tears.
“Can’t you stay?”
“Alright, alright,” Lin Feng gently patted her head and smiled. “I’m going back to earn military merit. Once I become a Decurion, I’ll get us a bigger house. If I make it to Centurion, or even General, I’ll buy us a manor right here in Yan Pass Town.”
“You’ll become a noblewoman and finally enjoy a good life.”
“You’ll have two or three maids to carry your bags and a dozen guards to protect you. No one will dare bully my wife again. What do you think?”
“I don’t want that!”
“All I want is my husband safe and sound. I don’t need a manor, or maids, or guards—I just want you to come home safely.”
He Caiwei clung to him tightly, refusing to let go.
Lin Feng didn’t push her away.
She couldn’t bear to part with him… and neither could he.
But he had to go. Military law wasn’t a joke. And besides, Lin Feng wanted to climb higher—to grow stronger.
“My dear, if you don’t let go, I’ll miss my report time.”
He bent down and kissed her cheek, whispering, “Wait for me at home. When I return… just wait and see how I’ll deal with you, you little minx.”
“Hmph! I’m not scared of you!” she said, cheeks blushing with both shyness and reluctance.
Under her tearful gaze, Lin Feng mounted his horse and rode off without hesitation.
After riding a short distance, her voice called out behind him, “Husband, promise you’ll come back! Someone at home is waiting for you!”
Lin Feng didn’t look back, but his steps became even firmer. In his heart, he silently vowed, “I will come back. No matter what.”
“When I return, I’ll never let my wife suffer even a sliver of grievance again!”
…
Yan Pass Military Camp.
Half an hour later, Lin Feng arrived outside the barracks.
Seeing his old comrades standing in a row, he was a bit confused.
In this sweltering heat, wouldn’t it be nicer to rest inside?
As he approached, many of them wore mocking expressions.
Someone deliberately teased, “Hey Lin Feng, how’s that heterochromia wife of yours? Bet she’s really sweet, huh? Hahaha…”
“Definitely! Look how skinny he is now—he must’ve spent every night going at it.”
“Lucky bastard. That woman was the prettiest of the lot. Even the Decurion had an eye on her. If we weren’t about to go to war and afraid of bad luck, she wouldn’t have ended up with him!”
Lin Feng ignored the gossip, treating it like sour grapes.
Just then, Jiang Yi—one of the Grade C soldiers who had a decent relationship with him—quietly leaned over and whispered, “Lin Feng, the Decurion is waiting for you inside!”
“Be sharp. He doesn’t look like he’s in a good mood.”
