Chapter 7: I Just Want You to Be Happy

Huangsha Village was so poor that even a thief would be moved to tears and leave behind a bag of rice before leaving.

But no matter how tough life got, it still had to go on.

In the end, Xu Fan managed to convince his aging parents to let Ji Hanyue stay at home through the winter.

Of course, the price was that Xu Fan had to take on a lot more work every day. He got up earlier than the roosters, slept later than the dogs, ate worse than pigs, and his mental state was worse than a corporate slave.

That was just daily life for the hardworking Xu Fan.

Ji Hanyue quietly observed all of this, her heart tightening with sorrow. She wasn’t heartless. She genuinely wanted to shoulder some of the burden with Xu Fan. But how could he possibly let a pampered princess, whose delicate fingers had never touched even warm spring water, do such exhausting labor?

So every time, he just smiled and said nothing.

Ji Hanyue tried to help with housework, but it always ended in disaster. Her beautiful eyes gradually lost their brightness.

Noticing her growing gloom, Xu Fan thought for a moment and said, “Sister Hanyue, if you’re willing, can you tell me about the world outside?”

He had to give her something to think about. Otherwise, she’d just sit idle and fall into silent sorrow. That kind of bottled-up grief would wear anyone down.

The world outside?

Hearing that, Ji Hanyue was suddenly enlightened. Life suddenly seemed full of promise. Xu Fan’s words reminded her—she still had something.

She could cultivate diligently and one day take little Xu Fan to explore the world outside.

With that thought, a flicker of anticipation bloomed in her heart.

She gently placed her smooth, fair hand on his shoulder, easing his day’s fatigue while telling him stories about the vibrant world beyond.

Xu Fan listened quietly to Ji Hanyue describe a world he had already wandered through countless times. His gaze turned nostalgic as childhood memories of streets and windmills surfaced.

Ji Hanyue wanted to take Xu Fan to see the world. But all Xu Fan wanted was to return home.

…

Spring returned to the earth, and life stirred once again.

Outside, the snow was quietly melting.

Gentle spring winds roamed across the land, breathing new life into all things and quietly bidding farewell to the story-filled winter.

Watching the melting snow, Ji Hanyue suddenly felt a sense of panic. She stumbled her way toward Xu Fan, who was busy feeding chickens. “Xu Fan! Xu Fan!”

Seeing Ji Hanyue in such a rush, Xu Fan looked puzzled. He casually kicked away the old hen squawking at his feet before raising his head. “Sister Hanyue, what’s got you so flustered? Did something happen?”

“I…”

Facing Xu Fan’s clear and sincere gaze, Ji Hanyue froze.

Did something happen?

Not exactly.

But according to their previous agreement… it was time for her to leave.

…

At the entrance of Huangsha Village.

Xu Fan’s parents had already gone to the fields to seize the opportunity of early planting season, so only Xu Fan remained to see Ji Hanyue off.

“Xu Fan…”

Ji Hanyue looked at the youth’s pure, innocent face, hesitated a moment, then voiced the thought that had lingered in her heart, “Didn’t you say you wanted to see the world outside?”

“Why don’t I take you out to see it, alright?”

Looking at Ji Hanyue’s eyes, filled with clear, expectant light like an autumn lake, Xu Fan was slightly stunned but still shook his head.

The reason was simple.

He had the system. It wouldn’t be hard to find Ji Hanyue again in the future.

But his parents in this life were different.

According to the system, they had less than ten years left to live.

It was fate—something no one could change.

Although Xu Fan had been reincarnated, he wasn’t heartless. He cherished the bonds of every lifetime.

That’s why, in the decade left, he wanted to accompany his parents well.

But he couldn’t tell Ji Hanyue the real reason, so he just smiled, those obsidian-like eyes calm like a quiet forest pond. “Sister Hanyue, my family needs me.”

Ji Hanyue hadn’t expected Xu Fan to refuse. She bit her lip lightly, her expression a mix of frustration and sorrow as she stared at him. “I could help you become a cultivator. Then you…”

Xu Fan felt oddly guilty under her gaze and quickly interrupted with a light cough, “Sister Hanyue, it’s getting late. You should go now.”

Stomping her foot in frustration, Ji Hanyue looked at Xu Fan’s eyes—so pure and clear—and though reluctant, still said, “Then it’s settled. When you grow up, you must come find me!”

“Mm.”

Xu Fan’s reply was calm—so calm it made Ji Hanyue feel an unexpected sting in her chest, as if a thousand-kilogram boulder was pressing on it.

Little brat… not obedient at all.

Ji Hanyue muttered inwardly.

But she wasn’t the type to dawdle. Taking a deep breath, she gave Xu Fan one final look and turned to leave.

Just then, Xu Fan’s voice stopped her. “Wait!”

She paused immediately, her eyes lighting up with a hint of smugness and joy. “Little brat, couldn’t bear to part with me after all?”

But when she turned around, she saw Xu Fan holding a bundle. Her smile froze.

His expression was still casual as he handed the bulging bundle to her. “I was worried you wouldn’t like coarse mantou on the road, so I did some work at the village landlord’s place to trade for these.”

“This bag is filled with white flour mantou. Take them with you.”

Ji Hanyue was stunned.

Just thinking of Xu Fan working so hard to get mantou for her made her chest tighten. Her throat felt blocked as if she’d swallowed a rock.

She didn’t take the mantou. She just bit her lip and stared at Xu Fan like a dazed wooden doll.

Xu Fan’s eyelid twitched, sensing something off. He shoved the bag into her hands and tried to push her away.

But Ji Hanyue didn’t move. Instead, she took a deep breath, her voice trembling without her noticing, “Xu Fan… I’m not anyone special to you. Why are you treating me so well?”

Xu Fan thought, You’re my only hope of returning home. If I don’t treat you well and one day you get depressed and die, what am I supposed to do?

But he couldn’t say that.

Seeing Ji Hanyue’s determined expression, clearly not giving up until she got an answer, Xu Fan scratched his head, trying to come up with something she could accept.

She said nothing, only stared at him like a wife abandoned by her husband, silently waiting for an explanation.

She had imagined how he might answer.

Probably something like: because she was beautiful or had a nice figure. After all, that’s what she always heard in the Imperial Palace.

She hoped Xu Fan would say something like that so she could leave peacefully, comforting herself that Xu Fan was just like everyone else, and there was no need to be so attached.

But Xu Fan didn’t say that.

He said, “Because you always seem unhappy. I just want you to be happy.”

…

Walking along the winding mountain path, Ji Hanyue’s eyes felt sore, her heart heavy, her head dizzy.

Everything felt wrong. She was miserable.

She was a pampered princess. She had never endured such hardship. She could only walk a little before needing to rest.

Finding a large tree to sit against, she looked back at Huangsha Village a few hundred meters away, lost in thought.

Strange. She wasn’t that weak, was she?

Why had it taken her nearly half an hour to walk just a few hundred meters?

Maybe she was just hungry. That would explain the lack of strength and the emotional turmoil.

So she opened the bundle Xu Fan gave her and saw it was packed full of white mantou.

She picked one up and took an elegant bite, chewing slowly.

It was sweet—far better than coarse mantou.

As she ate, she glanced back toward Huangsha Village. “Little brat… at least you have a conscience. You do know how to care for someone…”

But she wasn’t the type to hesitate or look back.

After finishing the mantou, Ji Hanyue felt re-energized. She stood up gracefully, whispering, “No more delays. It’s time to go. Even I’m getting annoyed with my own hesitating…”

Yet, just as she made up her mind, something compelled her to glance back toward Huangsha Village one last time.

And there, at the village entrance where she had stood before, little Xu Fan was still there.

But now, beside him stood a girl with braided hair. The two of them looked like a perfect match, talking about something with cheerful smiles.

At that moment, Ji Hanyue suddenly realized she was wrong.

She wasn’t someone who looked back.

Except when it came to that little brat.
