Chapter 118: Does Xia Yuyu Change Her Past?

Xia Yumeng’s face was flushed with tears as she looked at Ling Kong, unable to utter a single word. At this point, even speaking to him felt meaningless. No matter what she said—apologies or explanations—it wouldn’t change the fact that Ling Kong was no longer hers.

After dealing with Pan Ya, Ling Kong glanced sideways at Xia Yumeng. Of course, he understood what she was thinking, but he didn’t care. No matter how much she longed for the past, he would never keep her in his heart again.

“Head to the entrance. It’s been two months since you arrived, so it’s about time to return.” His voice was flat, and he turned away without another glance. She had to survive, because if he couldn’t find the Soul Jade Crystal, he’d never uncover the truth about Jiang Wuxi’s mother.

“Brother Ling Kong…” Xia Yumeng’s vision blurred as she stared at him. “Can I… stay with you? Will you take me with you?”

Back when Chu Mo was around, she still felt a trace of safety. But now that he was gone, she was truly alone. How could she survive on her own in such a dangerous world?

“Xia Yu again!” Ling Kong suddenly shouted. His gaze turned sharp as it landed on her. “I don’t intend to hurt you, but I also have no intention of looking after you. Everything that happened has been your own doing. Don’t let this happen again. Remember, the best kind of relationship between us… is no relationship at all.”

Since there was no connection between them, there was no reason for her to follow him.

In truth, Ling Kong never wanted to target Xia Yumeng. More often than not, it was she who tried to stir trouble for him and Jiang Zhuxi. She was always the one pushing boundaries. What did she see him as—an enemy? A lover? A mix of both?

He didn’t want any of it. All he wished for now was to be strangers.

If she kept interfering with him and Jiang Zhuxi, he wouldn’t hold back.

Xia Yumeng sobbed again, speechless as she looked at him. Could she really be nothing to him? Just a stranger?

“Here. Take this and leave.” Ling Kong waved his hand, throwing a map at her. “From now on, I hope we’re just strangers—strangers who don’t even greet each other when we meet.”

If possible, he wouldn’t even bother seeing her again. Being strangers was best. As for the Soul Jade Crystal, if they encountered each other again, they would each fight for it according to their abilities. Their relationship wouldn’t factor into it at all.

Xia Yumeng looked at the map, then at Ling Kong again. She truly wanted to stay with him. With his protection, she could finally feel safe. But he seemed to genuinely despise her. He didn’t even want her nearby.

She looked so pitiful standing there. But Ling Kong remained unmoved. He believed that people who ended up in miserable situations usually brought it upon themselves. She had constantly made trouble for herself.

What made it worse was that during their time in the ancient ruins, her true intentions were fully revealed—she had even wanted to kill Jiang Zhuxi. That alone erased any chance of sympathy. Crying and acting pitiful wouldn’t change anything. If not for her potential usefulness in finding the Soul Jade Crystal, Ling Kong would’ve already gotten rid of her.

“If you really like someone, then be a one-of-a-kind kind of girl,” Ling Kong said again. “Don’t be indecisive. If you can change your ways, maybe… maybe we can be friends.”

He didn’t harbor deep hatred toward her. If she could truly change and become a decent person, becoming friends wasn’t impossible. That way, her luck could even be used openly and justifiably. But the condition was clear—she had to genuinely change.

“I… I’ll change! Brother Ling Kong, I’ll change!” Xia Yumeng quickly said. “It’s my fault. I know it now. I shouldn’t have been thinking about so many people at once.”

“Then change it. Talking isn’t enough.” Ling Kong’s tone was flat. With that, he turned and vanished in a flash, returning to the small mountain.

Whether she could change or not, it was up to her. If she couldn’t, then so be it.

“Then… can we really be friends?” she asked softly, her eyes full of hope. Being ordinary friends was still better than nothing. After witnessing the life-and-death situations of the ancient ruins, she understood the importance of strength. Ling Kong had that strength. Even a surface-level friendship with him was worth it. It could offer her safety and opportunities.

“Then… can I follow you now?” she asked again.

“You can,” Ling Kong said coldly, “but I can’t guarantee she won’t kill you.”

Xia Yumeng’s eyes immediately turned to Jiang Zhuxi. But she quickly looked away. In front of Jiang Zhuxi, she had nothing. No dignity, no status. She didn’t even dare to look her in the eye.

Jiang Zhuxi was like a goddess, and she… she was just a mortal. Somehow, Jiang Zhuxi had become so much stronger than her. Once upon a time, they were almost equals. But now, Jiang Zhuxi surpassed her in everything.

Xia Yumeng’s lips trembled. “I’ll go alone,” she finally said, picking up the map Ling Kong had given her.

Part of her feared Jiang Zhuxi—feared that Jiang Zhuxi might actually kill her. Another part feared watching Ling Kong and Jiang Zhuxi show affection every day. That kind of pain was worse than death. So she chose to leave. Alone.

“Then… Brother Ling Kong, I’m going. See you outside.”

She stood up again. Ling Kong said nothing.

Glancing once more at Ling Kong and Jiang Zhuxi, Xia Yumeng turned and walked away. No one saw the cold determination that flashed across her face as she left.

Ling Kong and Jiang Zhuxi stood high above, watching her go.

“Are you really willing to be friends with her?” Jiang Zhuxi asked softly.

“If we could be ordinary friends, I could make use of her luck. It would save us a lot of trouble.” Ling Kong sighed, shaking his head. “But it’s a pity. She can’t change.”

“She can’t? I thought she seemed sincere just now.” Jiang Zhuxi looked puzzled.

Ling Kong chuckled and put a hand on her shoulder. “My wife, have you become naïve just because you’ve been protected too well?”

“How am I naïve?” she frowned.

“Then think about it. Can she really change? Why would she? Based on a few words?” Ling Kong asked.

“You mean… she’s pretending?” Jiang Zhuxi looked at Xia Yumeng’s back.

“At least half of it is fake,” Ling Kong replied with a faint smile.

“How can you tell?” she asked.

“Look at Chu Mo. He died so miserably. If she truly had a heart, she would’ve at least buried him properly.”

That struck Jiang Zhuxi. It was true. Chu Mo and Xia Yumeng had been through thick and thin together. Yet now that Chu Mo was dead, she didn’t even seem very sad. She didn’t even see to his burial.

Ling Kong raised his sword and swung it. Sword energy burst out, igniting Chu Mo’s body in black flame—cremating him.

“When she was talking to me, her mind was filled with schemes. So, of course, she didn’t care about Chu Mo,” Ling Kong said with a faint smile.

“Then… what is she planning?” Jiang Zhuxi asked.

“You’d better be cautious of her from now on,” Ling Kong warned.

“Why?” Jiang Zhuxi didn’t quite get it.

“It’s easy to guard against enemies in the open, but hard against those in the shadows,” he sighed. “From now on, Xia Yumeng probably won’t challenge us directly. Instead, she’ll use underhanded tactics.”

She had blackened.

Before, her hatred and jealousy were obvious. Now, she’d learned that facing them head-on wouldn’t work. She’d hidden her jealousy and started scheming in secret. When someone learns to hide their hatred—that’s when they become truly dangerous.

Because that’s when the darkness takes over completely.

They say once someone blackens, they become ten times more terrifying. While someone who tries to redeem themselves becomes three points weaker.

Now that she had blackened, Xia Yumeng wasn’t someone they could take lightly.

“So… she acted full of remorse and said she wanted to be friends, but it was just an act?” Jiang Zhuxi asked.

Some people do suddenly change, especially when faced with despair. Xia Yumeng had likely made a decision in that moment—not to be enemies anymore. But that didn’t mean she had turned good.

“I really didn’t want her to become like this,” Ling Kong said with a sigh. His original plan had been to avoid Xia Yumeng so that the tragic fate awaiting Jiang Zhuxi in the original novel wouldn’t happen.

But Xia Yumeng had pushed herself to this point. It wasn’t his fault. He had even given her a second chance. She simply didn’t value it. Now, she had taken a completely different path—she had become a villain.

“It’s all her fault,” Jiang Zhuxi said calmly. “It has nothing to do with you.”

“I hope I can find all the Soul Jade Crystals soon,” Ling Kong muttered. “I don’t want to keep her around any longer. She’s a threat to you.”

He only tolerated her for the sake of the Soul Jade Crystal and the truth behind Jiang Zhuxi’s mother. Otherwise, he would have ended her already.

“She can’t threaten me,” Jiang Zhuxi said with a frown.

Ling Kong smiled. If it weren’t for his presence… would she really be so confident?

“Let’s go,” he said, waving his hand.

As long as she stayed near Jiang Zhuxi, he would protect her. As for Xia Yumeng, whatever ending awaited her would be the path she chose.

From female lead to female fighter, and now even manipulative villainess—this was probably Xia Yumeng’s true nature.

Ling Kong continued using the Insect Control Technique to gather more beasts nearby.

He was preparing to attack the Black World again.
