Chapter 1: Two and a Half Years of Online Dating, All Just to Delete Her on the Day We Finally Met!

“Holy shit, did you guys see that? The class monitor is wearing a pink JK uniform!”

“With looks like hers, she could easily be an influencer.”

“That’s underselling her. Our class monitor could give an A-list celebrity a run for her money.”

“What’s she doing? Why is she carrying flowers?”

“Flowers? Who gave them to her?”

“What do you mean, who gave them to her? She’s the one giving them to someone.”

“My girlfriend told me the class monitor is meeting her online boyfriend in person today. She’s waiting for him on the sports field!”

Several boys crowded around the classroom windows, craning their necks to look toward the sports field. Meanwhile, the girls gathered in groups of two or three, whispering among themselves with undisguised excitement and anticipation in their eyes.

After all, this was Xia Anmian.

She wasn’t merely their class monitor. She was so strict that she practically served as the Advanced Class’s second homeroom teacher. The fact that everyone in their class consistently scored above 600 points was partly thanks to her relentless supervision.

Just how incredible did a guy have to be to win over someone like her?

Jiang Yi leaned lazily against the doorframe and followed everyone’s gaze toward the sports field.

Xia Anmian stood beside the running track in a pink JK outfit. Her white short-sleeved shirt was neatly tucked into her skirt, whose hem fell just above her knees. A small bouquet of baby’s breath rested in her hands.

Sunlight fell across her face, softening the features that were usually cold enough to freeze anyone who looked at her.

She really was beautiful.

In fact, she looked even better than the private photos she had sent him.

“Brother Jiang, aren’t you going to take a look? That’s our class monitor. We’ve known her for three years, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen her at school without her uniform.” Yu Yang nudged him with an elbow.

Jiang Yi withdrew his gaze and pulled his phone from his pocket, replying lazily, “What’s there to see? It’s not like I haven’t seen her before.”

“Yeah, keep pretending. We’ve graduated. If you don’t look now, you might never get another chance.” After saying that, Yu Yang squeezed closer to the window to join the others.

Jiang Yi merely shook his head. He lowered his gaze and unlocked his phone.

There were two pinned chats at the top of his WeChat. One of them belonged to a contact saved as “Insomniac Bear,” and three new messages were waiting for him.

[Baby, are you here yet?]

[Can we meet on the sports field?]

[I brought you baby’s breath!]

A sticker of a little rabbit spinning in circles followed the messages.

Jiang Yi stared at the rabbit for three seconds. His thumb hovered over the screen, and suddenly, he found the whole thing rather amusing.

Insomniac Bear was her online username.

Xia Anmian. Xia Insomnia. A girl who kept people awake at night.

Back when they had first started their freshman year, Xia Anmian had reprimanded Jiang Yi in front of the entire class. From that moment onward, he had set his sights on this class monitor.

He had to admit that this iron-willed girl had been incredibly difficult to win over.

But he was Jiang Yi.

With tens of thousands of hours of experience playing galgames under his belt, he had eventually conquered even her.

And just as Jiang Yi had expected, the Xia Anmian online was completely different from the one everyone knew at school.

She would send him good-morning and good-night messages.

She would complain to him whenever they had too much homework.

Whenever he did badly on an exam, she would even send him a voice message, gently comforting him, “It’s okay. How about I sing you a song?”

Sometimes, she would even take the initiative to send him revealing photos of herself and ask him what he thought.

What she didn’t know was that the person on the other side of the screen was Jiang Yi.

In Insomniac Bear’s world, the boy she was dating was named Ning Gui. He attended the same school, loved basketball, and came from a family where his parents had a terrible relationship. Because of that painful upbringing, he supposedly took romantic relationships more seriously than anyone else.

Jiang Yi had made up the entire backstory on a whim.

The more miserable the story, the more believable it sounded.

And the more believable a lie seemed, the easier it was for people to swallow it whole.

They had been dating online for two and a half years.

Now, the college entrance examination results were finally out, and they had received their high school graduation certificates. Today was the day Jiang Yi had promised Xia Anmian that they would finally meet in person.

It was also the day he intended to end their relationship for good.

Jiang Yi tapped the three dots in the upper-right corner of Insomniac Bear’s profile.

He scrolled all the way down.

Delete Contact.

His fingers moved quickly and smoothly. There wasn’t even a tenth of a second of hesitation.

[Deleting this contact will also delete the chat history, which cannot be recovered. Confirm deletion?]

Confirm.

The rush felt even better than he had imagined.

Jiang Yi almost regretted not saving Xia Anmian’s phone number. At the very least, he could have listened to her send him furious voice messages afterward.

Two and a half years.

All for this moment.

She had humiliated him in front of the entire class, so on the very day they were supposed to turn their online romance into something real, he would leave her standing beneath the blazing sun, clutching flowers as she waited for someone who would never come.

Fair was fair.

Once everything was done, Jiang Yi checked the time. It was only 10:30 a.m. If he left now, he would reach the restaurant at exactly 11:00 a.m. for the family gathering.

Breaking up with Xia Anmian wasn’t the only important event today.

There was something else.

His father had actually remarried behind his back.

When Jiang Yi first heard about it, his immediate reaction had been disbelief.

He knew his father far too well.

When Jiang Yi was two years old, his mother had abandoned her husband and son and run away with a factory owner. Ever since then, it was as though something inside his father had died.

Truthfully, his father’s circumstances weren’t bad at all. He was a skilled construction worker who earned a solid 500 to 600 yuan a day. Matchmakers practically competed to introduce women to him, yet he refused to meet any of them.

Every time, his answer was exactly the same, “Women can’t be trusted. I’ll spend the rest of my life looking after my son.”

One particular memory remained painfully vivid in Jiang Yi’s mind.

When he was in his first year of middle school, his father discovered his first teenage romance and nearly beat him to death.

A bamboo switch as thick as a thumb lashed across his body until three of them snapped. All the while, his father kept shouting, “Are you trying to become like your mother? Are you going to turn out just like your mother?!”

From that day onward, Jiang Yi learned how to hide himself.

In front of his father, he was the obedient, dull son who cared about nothing but studying and never spoke to girls.

But in reality?

Over the years, he had dated at least twenty girls.

Even now, he was simultaneously talking to four online girlfriends.

No—he had just broken up with one.

So there were three left.

Jiang Yi genuinely couldn’t understand how a man like his father could possibly remarry. Yet not only had he done it, he had already been married for six months.

He simply hadn’t told his son.

…

The private room Jiang Jianguo had reserved wasn’t particularly large, but it was clean and tidy.

After entering, Jiang Yi took a seat beside the window.

Jiang Jianguo rubbed his hands together and looked up at his son. His lips moved several times, as though he wanted to say something but couldn’t quite find the words.

Sitting across from him, Jiang Yi casually asked, “Dad, what’s Aunt Xia like?”

The question seemed to instantly bring Jiang Jianguo to life. He leaned forward slightly, his voice warming with an enthusiasm he himself didn’t seem to notice, “She’s a good woman. A genuinely good woman. She cooks for the workers at the construction site. She’s hardworking, efficient, and easy to get along with. It hasn’t been easy for her either, raising her daughter alone all these years.”

As Jiang Yi listened to his father talk about Aunt Xia, he picked up his phone, unlocked the screen, and opened WeChat.

A long string of friend requests filled his notification bar.

Every single one came from the same account.

Its profile picture was a simple white drawing of a little bear curled up asleep.

Verification messages appeared one after another, packed tightly into the preview window. Each line seemed almost desperate enough to force its way through the screen.

“Baby, why did you delete me?”

“We agreed to meet today. I’ve been waiting for you on the sports field for so long…”

“Did something happen to you? Please reply to me, okay?”

“I’m begging you. Just say something to me…”

“What’s wrong? Did I do something wrong? I can change…”

“Baby, please don’t scare me…”

Jiang Yi’s gaze lingered on the messages for a brief moment.

The corner of his mouth slowly curved upward.

He didn’t open them.

He didn’t reply.

Instead, he went directly to the account’s profile.

Block.

Confirm.

Then he returned to the friend-request list and selected Ignore All.

His fingertip swept across the screen with cold, effortless decisiveness.

Not a trace of hesitation remained.
