I Already Severed Ties With Them. Who Would Bother With Them Now? - Chapter 14:
Chapter 14: Get Lost, Now!
Soon, it was 6 p.m. and the workday ended. Another dull day at work had passed, so dull that Zhang Xiaofeng was still not used to it. In the past, he used to run around and work tirelessly for Su Yuebai and her family’s company, racking his brain and exhausting himself. Now, he had nothing to do and was as idle as a shepherd, yet his salary was more than 10,000 yuan higher than before! Leaving them had truly been the right choice!
“Work’s over. Everyone can leave now.” The boss had already sent a message in the group chat.
Zhang Xiaofeng glanced at it, packed up happily, and left. After taking the elevator down and just reaching the building’s entrance, his phone suddenly rang. He pulled it out from his pocket—it was an internet call.
He instantly figured it was probably Su Yuebai. Without even looking, he declined the call directly.
Then he got on a bus. After about three to five minutes, his phone chimed with a message notification.
When he checked it, he saw a long block of text—at least a thousand words—written like some emotional essay. The opening lines were filled with regret and sentimentality, but Zhang Xiaofeng couldn’t be bothered to finish reading and deleted it immediately.
If it hadn’t previewed a few words in the notification bar, he wouldn’t have read a single character. Trash woman. What does she have to do with me now? She’s the one who kicked me out. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. What’s the point of writing long messages to beg me to come back? Do I even know you? Get lost! Hahaha!
“Zhang Xiaofeng, what are you laughing at?” a gentle voice suddenly came from beside him.
Zhang Xiaofeng turned his head and saw it was his colleague, Wang Xue. She had boarded the same bus without him noticing. He replied, “Nothing, I just remembered a really funny joke, so I laughed a bit.”
“What joke? Tell me!” Wang Xue was a lively and cute girl, gentle in personality, a recent college graduate, and a new hire at the company. Her seat was just across the corridor from Zhang Xiaofeng’s.
Zhang Xiaofeng rubbed his nose and smiled, “It’s really nothing. Just a regular joke. I just found it hilarious.”
“You probably think I wouldn’t get it, huh?” Wang Xue’s face lit up with a bright smile, dimples showing on both cheeks. She figured it might be one of those jokes only guys would understand, maybe even a lame one, so she didn’t press further.
After chatting for a while, Zhang Xiaofeng arrived at his stop and got off the bus.
He was still staying at a hotel, a different one this time. He planned to find a place to live soon.
There were many restaurants outside the hotel. Zhang Xiaofeng enjoyed a satisfying meal before heading up to rest.
Coincidentally, as he entered the hotel, a passing woman spotted him. Her name was Zhang Tiantian, a close friend of Su Yuebai. The two were very close. Seeing Zhang Xiaofeng, her expression tightened. She immediately took out her phone and called Su Yuebai.
These days, she’d heard a bit about Su Yuebai’s family situation and knew she was looking everywhere for Zhang Xiaofeng. Now that she’d seen him, of course, she would help her best friend.
The call was quickly answered, and Su Yuebai’s voice came through, “Tiantian, what is it? Something wrong?”
“I just ran into your boyfriend. Wait—he’s living in your house now, right? Should be called your husband now. Where are you? Come find him quickly!”
A sudden pang hit Su Yuebai’s heart. He used to be her husband, but not anymore. It was her own fault. They weren’t even boyfriend and girlfriend now. The pain was intense, but the news thrilled her. She hurriedly asked, “Really? Send me your location, quickly!”
“After all these years, would I lie to you? I’ll send it now!”
A moment later, Su Yuebai got the address—it was Wangjia Alley. That place was remote and quite far away. So he’d gone that far just to avoid her?
Suddenly, the pain in her heart deepened. She rushed downstairs and soon drove off toward Wangjia Alley.
…
After a full half-hour drive, Su Yuebai arrived. She immediately spotted her best friend, Zhang Tiantian, waiting for her.
She quickly parked her car, panicked and breathless, “So this is where he’s staying. I thought I’d never see him again!”
These past days, she hadn’t even heard his voice, let alone seen him in person. Every time she called, she didn’t dare speak, afraid he would hang up. But lately, he’d stopped answering unfamiliar calls altogether, and no matter how many messages she sent, he never replied. She thought she’d never see him again… but now… Thank the heavens!
After so many days, truly, she missed him. She missed him terribly!
Su Yuebai didn’t want her child to grow up fatherless. She didn’t want the company to collapse. And she definitely didn’t want to lose her husband. These days had been agonizing. She feared she’d never see Zhang Xiaofeng again. If that happened, she would regret it forever!
“You go on up. I’ll get going,” Zhang Tiantian said.
“Wait. Do you know which room he’s in?” Su Yuebai looked up at the hotel. It had seven floors and countless rooms—she’d never find him just like this!
Unfortunately, Zhang Tiantian didn’t know either. She shook her head, “I have no idea.”
“Alright, you go then.” Su Yuebai nodded and entered the hotel.
At the front desk, the clerk on duty stood up as she walked in. “Hello, miss. Need a room?” he asked while sizing her up. With such luxurious clothes, what was a woman like her doing at a cheap hotel?
Su Yuebai suddenly felt awkward. She didn’t know if the staff would give her Zhang Xiaofeng’s room number. That would violate customer privacy—normally, they wouldn’t reveal it.
Seeing her dazed, the front desk repeated, “Hello? Miss, you’re not getting a room?”
Snapping out of it, she quickly said, “I… I’m looking for someone. May I ask if someone named Zhang Xiaofeng is staying here?”
The clerk checked the logbook and said, “Yes. Why?”
“What floor? Which room?” Su Yuebai asked.
The clerk’s tone became cautious, and he shook his head, “Sorry, miss. That’s client privacy. We can’t share that.”
“But I’m his fiancée…” As she said the word “fiancée,” embarrassment spread across her face. She wasn’t even his wife anymore. Her heart sank painfully. She wanted to cry. If only she hadn’t said those heartless words, he wouldn’t have left. No matter how poorly her parents treated him, he endured it all in silence. But she… she was the one who hurt him the most.
The clerk looked her over again and shook his head, “Sorry, miss. I need to call to confirm.”
Panic filled Su Yuebai’s face. She quickly said, “No, no, please don’t call! I’ll give you 1,000 yuan—can you just tell me?”
If he made that call and Zhang Xiaofeng found out she was here, he would definitely refuse to meet her!
The clerk understood. This woman clearly wasn’t the fiancée. She was probably here for some other reason. If he gave her the room number and word got out that they leaked client privacy, their hotel’s reputation would be ruined. Not to mention, what if she caused a scene?
The clerk said coldly, “Why don’t you call him yourself and ask him to come down?”
Su Yuebai felt like crying! She never imagined something like this would trap her one day. She took a deep breath and said, “I really am his fiancée. We had a fight. He left me. I regret it. I came to find him…” She gave a brief explanation.
The clerk looked at her and thought she deserved it. He replied coldly, “Then you find him yourself. We can’t disclose client information.”
Su Yuebai bowed repeatedly, “Thank you, thank you,” then went upstairs.
She started from the first floor and worked her way up to the fifth, knocking on every door—over eighty rooms in total. None of the voices inside belonged to Zhang Xiaofeng. One man even almost yelled at her when he realized she wasn’t someone he knew. All she could do was apologize for knocking on the wrong door and move on.
…
She had no idea how many doors she knocked on or how much time had passed. Her feet were blistered from walking, and still, she couldn’t find him. Eventually, she sat on the stairs, buried her head in her knees, and began to sob.
…
After resting for a long while, she finally calmed down, wiped her tears, and resumed the search. She knocked on more doors until she reached the seventh floor. Finally, she paused in front of a corner room.
Inside, she heard loud laughter from a video game. It was unmistakably Zhang Xiaofeng’s voice.
Su Yuebai knew he was playing Honor of Kings. Whenever he felt down or stressed, he played it to relax. Hearing him laugh so freely now, it was obvious—he was living better without her…
Her chest tightened. Her heart pounded, and her breath quickened. After waiting a long time, she finally gathered the courage to knock on the door.
The laughter inside abruptly stopped. A voice asked, “Who is it?”
Su Yuebai didn’t dare speak. After a moment, she took a deep breath, pinched her nose, and lowered her voice, “Delivery. Someone ordered food for you.”
Inside, Zhang Xiaofeng frowned. He didn’t know who it could be. Only Zhang Long knew he lived here, since he had to list an address for work. He didn’t have a fixed residence, so he listed the hotel. Maybe the boss ordered him a late-night snack, worried he’d jump ship?
Thinking that, Zhang Xiaofeng went to open the door.
As the door opened, he was met with the face he despised most.
Immediately, he tried to slam the door shut, but Su Yuebai reacted quickly and held it, forcing her way inside. She looked around, then plopped down on the bed and refused to leave.
Zhang Xiaofeng turned and glared at her with disgust. He didn’t know how she had the nerve to come or how she found him. He said coldly, “Why are you here? Didn’t we already sever ties? That’s what you said!”
Su Yuebai stared at him silently, lowering her head. After a long time, she finally said, “Come home with me, please?”
Zhang Xiaofeng sneered and mocked, “What a joke! Why would I go back with you?”
Su Yuebai stayed quiet. She had no words. Why should he go back with her? Their break was clear as day. She had made it clear when she kicked him out. Now, what right did she have to ask him back? What identity did she have?
After a long silence, she repeated softly, “Don’t say anything else… come back with me, okay?”
“No!” Zhang Xiaofeng snapped. “I’ve already made a clean break with you all. I don’t want you disturbing me again. I’m doing better than ever without you. I don’t need your fake pity!” He was furious just seeing her. He nearly lost control. Back then, he did everything she said, endured countless humiliations from her family, all in silence. And her? She was the one who told him to get lost. Not her parents—her!
If her parents had said it, he might’ve felt a little better. But it came from her own mouth! That was unforgivable! He would never forgive her. Not in this lifetime.
“Get lost!”
