I Became a Rich Heir in a Novel and Saved the Female Lead - Chapter 4:
Chapter 4: Returning to the Villa
Lin Wansu buried her face against Chen Xu’s chest, and her tears immediately began to fall, soaking into his shirt.
She didn’t make a sound. Only her shoulders trembled softly.
Chen Xu lowered his head and saw her somewhat comical soot-covered face. He instinctively wanted to wipe it clean for her, but his hand hesitated and stopped halfway.
Lin Wansu unconsciously tightened her arms around him, pressing her face firmly against his chest as she absorbed the reassuring warmth of his embrace.
Although this was the first time she had ever been so physically close to a man, she felt no resistance whatsoever.
She was terrified that this was merely a dream. Perhaps she was still trapped inside the burning warehouse, and everything before her was nothing more than a dying hallucination.
Lin Wansu whispered, “Chen Xu…”
After crying, her already hoarse voice had become even rougher.
Lin Wansu murmured, “I feel like… I’m nothing but trouble.”
Chen Xu had never been good at watching girls cry. Now, a pitiful young woman was curled up in his arms, crying while saying something like that.
He tightened his embrace slightly, his voice becoming exceptionally gentle.
Chen Xu reassured her, “You’re not trouble. Just sit here and rest. Don’t overthink anything.”
Lin Wansu didn’t answer. Her tears only fell harder.
Han Zheng, who was driving, couldn’t resist glancing at the rearview mirror from the corner of his eye. However, he immediately pretended he hadn’t seen anything and quietly increased the car’s speed again.
He thought he finally understood why his Young Master had rushed to the school in the middle of the night.
Apparently, he had gone there to play the hero and rescue a beauty!
Still, Han Zheng couldn’t suppress his confusion. If the Young Master had such a close relationship with that girl, how had she ended up trapped inside a burning warehouse in the middle of the night? And why had he, the captain of Chen Xu’s bodyguards, known absolutely nothing about it?
Those thoughts merely flashed through his mind. Naturally, Han Zheng wasn’t foolish enough to ask questions at a time like this.
Right now, the thing he should be worrying about was whether he would still have a job tomorrow.
The black Maybach sped through the streets, yet Chen Xu and Lin Wansu barely felt any bumps inside the cabin.
Only a few minutes later, the car smoothly entered the villa’s front courtyard and soon stopped at the entrance.
The medical team waiting beneath the covered entrance immediately surrounded the vehicle.
Several nurses pushed two mobile stretchers forward, followed by doctors carrying first-aid kits and portable oxygen cylinders.
Han Zheng quickly unfastened his seat belt, got out, and opened the rear door.
Han Zheng reported, “Young Master, the doctors are ready.”
Chen Xu nodded.
In truth, once the adrenaline from the fire had faded after he got into the car, pain had begun spreading throughout his entire body.
His back hurt the worst. The place where the burned doorframe had struck him felt as though it were on fire. Fortunately, the wooden frame hadn’t been particularly heavy. Otherwise, it might have broken his spine.
Even now, Chen Xu still hadn’t released Lin Wansu from his arms.
The girl had probably exhausted herself from crying. She rested against his chest with her eyes closed, but her fingers remained tightly clenched around his shirt. Even though the car had already stopped, she showed no intention of letting go.
Chen Xu looked down and gently patted her back.
Chen Xu said, “We’re here.”
Lin Wansu’s eyelashes fluttered before she slowly opened her eyes.
Instinctively, she looked outside.
Bright lights illuminated the covered entrance. Pale gray stone walls extended toward both sides, and through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the front, she could see an enormous living room that looked almost empty because of its sheer size.
The entire villa was quiet and spotless.
Compared with the smoke-filled warehouse they had just escaped from, it seemed like an entirely different world.
A trace of uneasiness appeared in Lin Wansu’s eyes.
She glanced at her old canvas shoes, which were covered in soot, and instinctively shrank backward.
Lin Wansu said softly, “I can walk by myself…”
Chen Xu retorted, “Like hell you can.”
He didn’t give her any opportunity to act tough. He simply carried her out of the car.
The moment Lin Wansu’s feet left the floor, she instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck.
When their bodies pressed closer together, she seemed to suddenly realize how intimate their position was, and the tips of her ears turned faintly red.
Chen Xu, however, had no attention to spare for that.
His back hurt, his injured ankle hurt, and he was carrying another person in his arms. Every step felt like a form of torture.
Yet he still didn’t want to hand Lin Wansu over to anyone else.
It wasn’t because he distrusted the doctors. Lin Wansu had only just escaped death and clearly hadn’t recovered emotionally. If a group of strangers suddenly surrounded her now, she might become frightened again.
There was absolutely no other reason.
A nurse pushed a stretcher closer and anxiously said, “Young Master, please put the patient on the stretcher.”
Chen Xu replied, “No need. Lead the way.”
The nurse hesitated, “But you’re injured too…”
Chen Xu said, “I’m fine.”
With only those three words, Chen Xu carried Lin Wansu into the villa.
Resting in his arms, Lin Wansu quietly stared at the side of his face.
She could feel the arms holding her trembling slightly, and she could see tiny beads of cold sweat covering his forehead.
Clearly, he wasn’t nearly as unaffected as he pretended to be.
Lin Wansu softly called, “Chen Xu.”
Chen Xu asked, “What now?”
Lin Wansu asked, “Does it hurt a lot?”
Chen Xu immediately replied, “No.”
The moment he finished speaking, his injured foot suddenly twisted beneath him.
A piercing pain shot through his ankle, and his entire face stiffened.
Lin Wansu saw everything clearly.
Lin Wansu said, “You’re lying.”
Chen Xu fell silent.
He lowered his head and looked at her.
Her eyes were still red, and streaks of soot remained across her face where her tears had washed through them. She looked both pitiful and somewhat comical.
Chen Xu said, “Talk less. Save your strength.”
Carrying Lin Wansu, he entered another elevator inside the villa. Han Zheng and several nurses followed closely behind.
The elevator quickly reached the underground floor.
As soon as the doors opened, the faint smell of disinfectant drifted toward them.
The private consultation room was located beside the underground garage, and all its emergency medical equipment had already been activated.
Chen Xu had almost never been here before.
Although he was an extremely wealthy second-generation heir, he wasn’t the kind of spoiled young master who enjoyed causing trouble everywhere. Aside from attending school, he usually stayed home and played video games. As a result, this consultation room had barely been used since it was built.
That didn’t mean its medical resources were neglected in the slightest.
Bright surgical lights illuminated the entire examination area. Patient monitors, oxygen equipment, and cabinets filled with emergency medicine were arranged neatly throughout the room. Several doctors in white coats were already waiting inside.
Chen Xu walked over and gently placed Lin Wansu on the hospital bed.
The instant her body touched the mattress, she instinctively reached out and grabbed Chen Xu’s hand.
The soft, delicate sensation against his palm made Chen Xu’s entire body tremble. Even the injuries he had suffered earlier suddenly seemed less painful.
Lin Wansu herself didn’t seem to realize there was anything unusual about what she had done. Only when she noticed everyone around them looking at her did she hurriedly release his hand.
Lin Wansu exclaimed, “I’m sorry!”
Chen Xu replied, “It’s fine.”
He didn’t leave immediately. Instead, he remained beside the bed until a female doctor placed an oxygen mask over Lin Wansu’s face. Only then did he take half a step backward.
Dr. Zhou, who was overseeing the consultation, registered Lin Wansu’s information before rapidly arranging the examinations.
Dr. Zhou instructed, “Check her blood oxygen saturation and carboxyhemoglobin levels first. Then perform blood tests, an electrocardiogram, and lung imaging.”
Afterward, Dr. Zhou used a stethoscope to listen carefully to Lin Wansu’s breathing.
Dr. Zhou asked, “Miss Lin, can you hear me?”
Lin Wansu gently nodded behind the oxygen mask.
Dr. Zhou asked, “Are you experiencing chest tightness, nausea, or dizziness?”
Lin Wansu answered weakly, “I’m a little dizzy, and my throat hurts…”
Dr. Zhou asked, “Any difficulty breathing?”
Lin Wansu replied, “A little earlier, but it feels much better now.”
Dr. Zhou examined her pupils, mouth, and nose. After confirming that there were no obvious burns, the doctor finally relaxed slightly.
A female nurse picked up a pair of scissors and prepared to cut open the sleeve of Lin Wansu’s school uniform where it had been damaged by the flames.
The moment Lin Wansu saw what she was doing, she immediately became nervous.
Lin Wansu pleaded, “Don’t cut it.”
The nurse stopped in confusion.
The nurse explained, “The sleeve is already stuck to the wound. If we don’t cut it open, it’ll be difficult to treat the injury on your arm.”
Lin Wansu hesitated, “But…”
She lowered her head and stared at the school uniform that had already faded from countless washes and was now covered in soot.
Her voice became quieter and quieter.
Lin Wansu whispered, “I don’t have any other clothes.”
The room briefly fell silent.
The nurse held the scissors without moving, suddenly unsure whether she should continue.
Chen Xu had been focused on worrying about Lin Wansu’s injuries, but those words left another heavy pressure in his chest.
Her school uniform was already torn and ruined, yet she still couldn’t bear to lose it.
Chen Xu said, “Don’t listen to her. Treat her however you need to.”
Then he looked at Lin Wansu and added, “I’ll replace your clothes.”
Lin Wansu raised her head and opened her mouth, wanting to say something else.
Chen Xu immediately snapped, “Enough. Tomorrow, I’ll buy you 100 sets if that’s what it takes.”
Startled by his stern tone, Lin Wansu shrank her shoulders and no longer dared to argue.
The nurse carefully cut open the sleeve, revealing Lin Wansu’s slender wrist.
