Chapter 50: Burn the Dragon King Hall to Ashes

Mo Meigui suddenly lifted her head.

For the first time, her cold eyes reflected a clear trace of something called “absurdity.” She stared at Qin Xiao, as if trying to confirm whether she had misheard him, or if the man before her had lost his mind.

Just moments ago, they had been fighting to the death. He had even taken away her last method of ending her own life, and now he was asking… what they should have for dinner?

“Dinner… what?” Her voice was dry, carrying a hoarse disbelief, like rusty gears grinding against each other.

Qin Xiao looked at her, his gaze calm and steady, as if that forceful and abrupt kiss from earlier had never happened. He didn’t even bother wiping away whatever might have been left at the corner of his lips. He just stood there quietly, as if waiting for an utterly normal answer.

That very calmness only made the storm in Mo Meigui’s heart surge even more violently. She clenched her still-functioning right hand, her nails almost digging into her palm. “Why did you save me?”

Her voice suddenly rose, filled with a desperate urge to self-destroy, her emotional dam collapsing in an instant. “My mission has already failed! The organization will never let a traitor go! There’s no way I can survive the Dragon King Hall’s hunt!”

Her words were sharp and absolute, as if declaring an already sealed and frozen fate. Every syllable carried the chill of death.

Qin Xiao didn’t respond immediately. He turned his head toward the ruined skylight of the abandoned factory, gazing at the deep night sky where only sparse stars shone. “Don’t you want to know where your biological parents are?”

His voice was soft, yet it was like a precise key prying open a hidden crack deep within the ice-sealed walls of Mo Meigui’s heart. “Do you really want to die just like this—full of regrets and without knowing anything?”

Mo Meigui’s body trembled slightly. That faint movement was painfully clear in the silence of the night. She bit her lip hard but said nothing.

“Life can actually be quite interesting,” Qin Xiao continued, his tone as casual as if he were talking about the weather. “There’s a lot of good food, too.”

He paused, letting his gaze fall back on Mo Meigui’s face, still marked with shock and a faint, complicated blush—a blush that stood out sharply against her pale skin. “Your future might not be as short as you think.”

With that, he simply sat down on a relatively clean patch of concrete nearby, leaning back slightly with his hands supporting him, his posture relaxed as if they had just finished a friendly spar. “Look,” he said, gesturing toward the sky, “stars.”

Mo Meigui stood frozen, staring ahead blankly, as if trying to process his words. After a long while, her strength seemed to drain away, and she slowly, silently lay down beside him. She curled her body on the cold ground, her missing left arm making her posture slightly awkward. Her gaze eventually shifted toward the star-filled sky, unfocused.

“The only thing I remember about my parents…” Her voice was so soft it was almost inaudible, laced with confusion and a barely noticeable fragility. “…was something like this—looking at the stars.”

“Later… I was adopted by the Dragon King Hall.”

“I don’t even know where my parents are now.”

“I only know I had a master, and a young master I was supposed to serve.” She paused, her tone tinged with the faintest trace of disgust—so faint it was almost imperceptible. “The young master’s smile was awful, like that big-mouthed monkey.”

“Honestly,” she turned her head to look at Qin Xiao’s profile, the moonlight outlining his calm and resolute features, “after so many years of missions, I’ve buried most of my emotions. My preferences for food… are one of the few things I’ve kept.”

“It’s all your fault for cooking too well. That’s why I started hesitating.”

Qin Xiao’s heart gave a sharp jolt. This was her holding back? Just now, every move she made had been lethal! Her standard for ‘hesitating’ was insane.

Mo Meigui seemed to pull herself out of her brief reminiscence. Her gaze darkened again, regaining the cold edge of a killer. She turned back to Qin Xiao, her tone carrying the weight of harsh reality. “Even if I stay, I’ll only bring trouble.”

“The Dragon King Hall hunts down every assassin who fails their mission and survives. Without exception.” Her voice was steady and flat. “Anyone who knows too much will also be silenced. If you get involved with me, you’ll only die faster.”

But Qin Xiao only smiled—carefree, with a dangerous certainty beneath it. “Then let’s just take down Ye Chen and the Dragon King Hall.”

He said it as lightly as if remarking on a sunny forecast. “Burn the Dragon King Hall to ash.”

Mo Meigui’s eyes flew wide open, filled with disbelief and absurdity. “Do you have any idea how many experts the Dragon King Hall has? Do you know how deep their influence runs? That’s not something one person can fight against!”

Qin Xiao merely smiled again, though his gaze sharpened like a blade, brimming with unquestionable confidence. “I don’t care about any of that. All I know is—no one who wants me dead has been born yet.”

He extended his right hand toward her in an inviting gesture.

Mo Meigui looked at his hand—long fingers, steady and strong. She hesitated, then spoke quietly, “You took the ring off my left hand. I can’t grip with it.” Her tone held no complaint, only a simple statement.

Qin Xiao froze for a second before realizing, scratching his nose awkwardly as he retracted his hand. “Oh, right. My bad. I’ll reattach it for you later.”

Clearing his throat, he swiftly returned to the main point, his eyes glinting with calculation, as if that brief moment of warmth had been an illusion. “Mo Meigui, here’s what you’ll do… Find a chance to contact Ye Chen. Tell him Qin Xiao was badly injured by you, but you were also seriously hurt by his dying counterattack. Now you’re hiding somewhere secret to recover and can’t return for now.”

“Make him believe you still have control of the situation. Tell him you need time to heal—and to track down my exact location. If he’s patient, fine. But if he’s not and comes to confirm whether I’m alive, make sure he brings plenty of people.” Qin Xiao’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I’ll knock a few of his teeth out first.”

Mo Meigui listened quietly, her gaze flickering with something complex. This man was terrifyingly bold—setting a trap with himself as bait. His ruthlessness and cunning were enough to send chills down her spine.

“But,” Qin Xiao added, “you need to wait a few days before telling him. Too soon would seem suspicious. I’m going into seclusion for some… research. This place will do. And I’ll need you to handle security so no one disturbs me.”

Mo Meigui studied him. For the first time, her cold face tried to form a smile—it was stiff, awkward, like ice cracking to reveal a hint of raw warmth. “Then my salary… needs to be high,” she said seriously.

Qin Xiao raised an eyebrow with interest. “How much do you want?”

She seemed to think carefully before cautiously naming a figure. “3,000!”

Qin Xiao nearly lost his composure on the spot. The Dragon King Hall really was a den of evil capitalists—squeezing labor to the bone! A top-tier professional like her, skilled in assassination, intelligence, and combat, only worth 3,000 yuan a month? That was worse than the harshest overtime schedules.

Forcing down his laughter, he put on a look of natural generosity. “I’ll give you 100,000 a month. No insurance or benefits for now because of your special status. But food and lodging are included.”

He let his gaze sweep over her with deliberate emphasis. “You’ll be protecting me closely.”

A faint blush spread silently across Mo Meigui’s pale cheeks, even tinting her ears. She quickly lowered her head, avoiding his eyes, and gave a soft, almost mosquito-like, “Okay.”

After a pause, she seemed to remember something important and quietly added, with a trace of shy expectation, “Remember… the rice has to be Wuchang rice. That’s the one I like.”
