I Was Reborn into the Past and Saved My Stunning Sister-in-Law at the Beginning - Chapter 3:
Chapter 3: He’s Practically a Dead Man—Feeding Him Would Be a Waste
It wasn’t just Xu Feng who felt this way—both Lin sisters also sensed that this Xu Feng wasn’t the man they knew.
Xu Feng didn’t bother explaining the change in him and instead began thinking fast. Starting from nothing was always the hardest when you didn’t have any capital.
“Wife, what are you standing around for? Let’s head home. We helped out with such a big issue, and they didn’t even ask us to stay for a meal.”
They were ready to risk their lives just now. If they didn’t at least get a meat dish out of it, that would feel really heartless.
“Oh, oh! You two sit down for a bit. I’ll go make something now.”
Too much had happened today, and Lin Xixue was still shaken. It wasn’t until Xu Feng reminded her that she snapped out of it, brought the cleaver from behind her back, and headed into the kitchen.
Seeing the knife in her sister’s hand, Lin Xiyue’s nose stung again. If anything had happened to her sister today, she didn’t know how she would’ve kept on living.
Luckily, this man had managed to show a little conscience when it mattered most. If he could keep treating her like this from now on, how great would that be?
Even if he just didn’t hit her so hard in the future, she wouldn’t feel so heartbroken.
Maybe sensing his wife’s sorrow, Xu Feng reached out and tried to pull Xiyue into his arms.
But the moment his hand touched her shoulder, Lin Xiyue instinctively flinched away.
Seeing this, Xu Feng felt a stabbing pain in his heart. Just how cruel had he been in the past?
“A’Feng… I…”
Lin Xiyue also realized that her husband had only wanted to hug her and felt guilty for pulling away.
“It’s fine. You’re pregnant, standing too long isn’t good.”
As he spoke, Xu Feng brought over a handmade wooden chair and gently helped Xiyue sit down.
He couldn’t help but sigh inwardly—this woman was really silly, but in such an adorable way.
Clearly he had been the cruel one in the past, yet now she was the one feeling guilty.
If in the previous life her sister hadn’t died and Xiyue hadn’t lost the baby, maybe she wouldn’t have become so utterly disappointed in him.
Thankfully, Heaven gave him another chance to make up for all of it.
Wang Jun, lying in bed, had been watching Lin Xiyue’s slightly swollen belly the whole time. Why had he spent everything he had and gotten himself buried in debt?
Was it really just for pride or pleasure?
Even in this poverty-stricken era, a man who couldn’t marry or produce a son was still looked down on.
Maybe once upon a time, Wang Jun still had a shred of hope—but now, all that was gone.
“Xu Feng, can I talk to you about something?”
After much hesitation, Wang Jun finally made up his mind.
“Yeah, go ahead.”
Xu Feng was busy thinking about how to build a business from scratch but didn’t mind the interruption.
In his past life, his hot temper and uselessness had pushed his wife to despair. This life, he was determined to change.
“Do you know what it means to ‘take over the family load’? I’m done for now. Every extra day I live is a day I steal from fate.”
Wang Jun sighed deeply after he spoke. It was his last option.
“What… What are you saying?”
Xu Feng was so shocked, he thought he’d misheard.
What Wang Jun meant was essentially handing Lin Xixue’s future over to Xu Feng.
This sort of thing wasn’t rare in this era. When a man became disabled, they might quietly invite another man into the household to support the family.
As long as it wasn’t made public, they could still live behind closed doors.
“No! I don’t agree!”
Out of nowhere, Lin Xiyue mustered up the courage to shout down Wang Jun’s suggestion.
She wasn’t sure whether her husband had truly changed or if this was just temporary, but she couldn’t take that risk.
That was a bottomless pit, and she wouldn’t let both sisters be dragged into hell.
Sure, life was hard while taking care of a cripple, but at least they still lived like humans.
“Sister-in-law, please have some pity. If I can’t pay the money next month, those people will still drag Xixue to the city. I’m not asking for much—just that the first child you have takes my surname.”
After Wang Jun said that, the once-angry Lin Xiyue suddenly fell silent.
Because it was true—how could her sister possibly repay all that debt?
But even if they agreed to what Wang Jun suggested, Xu Feng still wouldn’t be able to make money.
Letting him spend money was fine, but asking him to earn it? He hadn’t brought home a single coin in years.
“This depends on your sister’s choice. Don’t worry, Xiyue—your man will definitely repay the money.”
Watching the two sisters fret over a hundred-something yuan, Xu Feng couldn’t help but mutter to himself.
Do you even know how rich your family is? A single meal from them probably costs more than this.
But if he showed up at their doorstep now, Xu Feng wasn’t sure he’d survive.
Just then, Lin Xixue came in carrying a small wooden basin.
“There’s half a wild pheasant left at home. I’ll stew it for Xiyue to help nourish her body.”
Xu Feng quickly moved the table closer to his wife, and the scent of chicken fat rising from the soup made his mouth water.
To be honest, he hadn’t smelled meat in ages.
He took the bowl Lin Xixue handed him and immediately scooped out a full bowl of meat with a spoon.
Lin Xixue wanted to tell him the chicken was meant for her little sister, but after a moment’s thought, she held back.
If not for him today, things wouldn’t have ended so easily.
There was still a bit left in the pot—she could serve it to her sister later. She didn’t need to eat anyway.
As for Lin Xiyue, she didn’t say anything either. She had long been used to her husband’s greed.
Whenever there was good food at home, he never saved any for her. She just hadn’t expected him to be the same at her sister’s place.
Xu Feng didn’t notice the expressions on the sisters’ faces as he kept digging through the pot for meat, trying to fish out every last piece of chicken.
Just when Lin Xixue was about to speak up after watching him scoop a full bowl and still keep looking, Xu Feng placed the bowl right in front of Xiyue.
“Wife, eat this bowl of meat first. If you’re still hungry, have some cornbread.”
Even cornbread was rare enough that most families couldn’t eat their fill.
Hearing this, the two sisters froze in shock.
Lin Xiyue stared at the full bowl of meat in front of her and couldn’t hold back her tears.
“What are you crying for? The chicken will get cold.”
Xu Feng comforted her and went back to scooping up the last of the meat from the basin. Only when there wasn’t a single scrap left did he stop.
“Sister-in-law, you eat. Wang Jun’s already half-dead. Feeding him would be a waste. We’ll just drink the soup.”
That one line nearly choked Wang Jun to death. He had hunted the pheasant, and now he wouldn’t even get a bite.
Lin Xiyue, who had been crying moments ago, burst into laughter, and her tears stopped instantly.
“Crying and laughing like a little kid. Eat up.”
Xu Feng gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes with his fingers. Xiyue nodded and finally picked up a piece of chicken with her chopsticks.
She glanced at her husband’s bowl, which only held a thin soup that looked like water, and instinctively tried to give him some meat.
“Don’t give me any. You know how I lose my appetite when I see leftover feathers.”
Xu Feng immediately noticed her intention and came up with an excuse.
“Oh.”
Knowing she couldn’t argue with him, Lin Xiyue didn’t insist.
In this era, eating meat was like celebrating New Year. No one would really be picky.
They just couldn’t bear to eat it themselves. And she knew that.
So did Lin Xixue.
