Chapter 5: Deer Meat Is Too ‘Heaty’

Swish! A sharp whoosh sliced through the air as an iron-tipped arrow flew out, followed by a pained cry.

“Nice shot!”

Even though they had all entered the mountain together, before anyone else could react, Xu Jianjun had already locked onto his prey.

Following the sound, they saw a plump rabbit weighing about four to five jin.

“The moon’s full tonight and visibility’s good, but everyone keep quiet and don’t make any noise to scare off the beasts.”

This was advice all frequent hunters knew well. Shoushan was reminding Xu Feng—not blaming him, since Xu Feng had just been complimenting Jianjun.

Xu Feng quickly nodded and followed the team silently.

As they ventured deeper into the forest, they occasionally heard the calls of wild animals.

By the time the moon was high above their heads, the team had caught three rabbits and two wild chickens.

These were the most common game in the mountains—not particularly valuable, but still meat.

“Brother Shoushan, I don’t think we’re going to find that beast tonight.”

Even though the three hunting dogs had sharp noses, wild boars were known for roaming large territories.

With their thick hides and brute strength, they could wander through vast mountain ranges as they pleased.

“Let’s try our luck at the creek. Even if we don’t find the boar, we might still come across something else.”

The Xu family had lived at the foot of this mountain for generations. According to the elders, the mountain had everything—bears, tigers, deer, flying dragons, musk deer.

But in recent years, due to widespread hunger and poverty, the wildlife had been heavily hunted.

Extinction hadn’t happened, but to encounter bigger game now, you had to venture deep into the forest.

Wang Jun had done exactly that, hoping to get lucky—only to run into a bear and lose half his life.

The creek was where spring water flowed down the mountain. If you forgot to bring water during a hunt, this was the place to quench your thirst.

And not just humans—animals came here to drink too. So on a bright night like this, the chances of running into prey were high.

Xu Feng didn’t know much, but he simply stayed with the team.

They walked for nearly half an hour before the sound of rushing water reached their ears.

“Animals are on high alert when they drink. Everyone watch your steps and don’t make a sound!”

Shoushan reminded them again, especially Xu Feng. If they found nothing even at the creek, tonight’s trip would’ve been for nothing.

The group, along with their hunting dogs, approached silently. A quick sweep of the creek bank revealed nothing.

Clearly, luck wasn’t on their side tonight.

“Sigh, the mountain’s game is disappearing year by year. Heaven really doesn’t want us to live.”

Shoushan sighed toward the sky, his voice filled with bitterness.

No one else knew what to say. They could only sigh along with him.

Watching them all look so down, Xu Feng felt something stir in his heart.

The dust of the times fell heavily on every person, weighing them down like a thousand jin.

Even Xu Feng, in this moment, couldn’t change anything yet.

“Drink some water and eat some dry food. We’re not going back empty-handed tonight.”

As the leader, Shoushan quickly composed himself.

The group sat down on the spot and took out the cornbread they had prepared in advance. It was dry and coarse, but luckily they had fresh spring water to wash it down.

Seeing Xu Feng just sitting there stiffly, Shoushan broke off a piece of his cornbread and handed it over.

“Thanks.”

Xu Feng accepted it without hesitation. If he didn’t eat something now, he’d have no energy left to continue.

After resting for ten minutes, the group pulled themselves together and continued deeper along the creek.

Heaven never fails those who try. After another half hour, they finally encountered a large animal!

It was a stag with huge antlers, crouched by the creek, drinking while cautiously looking around.

Judging by its size, it had to weigh at least several dozen kilograms!

The group instantly perked up. Shoushan’s breathing even quickened.

It was about fifty meters away. Xu Jianjun had already drawn his bowstring to its full extent.

The stag was on the opposite side of the creek. If the arrow missed, it would vanish into the forest in a flash.

Swish!

The sharp sound of the arrow breaking through the air rang out. In the quiet of night, it was especially jarring. The animal reacted instantly.

It tilted its head slightly—just enough for the arrow to be deflected by its antlers.

The stag let out a shrill cry of pain but was still fast enough to make its escape.

Seeing the stag turn to bolt into the forest, Xu Jianjun gritted his teeth in frustration.

At that critical moment, Xu Feng didn’t even think. He yanked the firewood knife from his waist and hurled it with all his strength!

Another piercing cry followed. The knife landed squarely in the stag’s backside!

Shoushan stared wide-eyed at Xu Feng. That strength—damn, it was monstrous!

“After it!”

There was no time to be stunned. With a wound like that, the stag wasn’t getting far.

The three hunting dogs sprang forward. In no time, they had torn out the wounded stag’s throat.

“Quick, drain the blood!”

They had to bleed it right away. If they didn’t, the meat would carry a foul gamey taste.

Of course, the blood wouldn’t go to waste—deer blood was extremely nourishing.

In fact, every part of a stag was valuable.

“This would’ve been a wasted trip if it weren’t for Xu Feng.”

Shoushan was glad he had insisted on bringing Xu Feng along. Jianjun, meanwhile, was still stunned at Xu Feng’s strength.

He had thrown a knife over fifty meters, at a moving target—and hit!

“How are we splitting this?”

Xu Feng didn’t bother with small talk and asked the most important question.

They were here for the game. Nothing wrong with asking.

“According to the rules, the meat gets split evenly, but the valuable parts are yours.”

Since everyone had helped, this was a fair distribution.

Xu Feng had no objections, but he didn’t forget the wild chicken they had promised him earlier.

The stag’s scent was thick with blood. Shoushan didn’t want to keep looking for the wild boar anymore.

If a bear or a tiger caught the scent, the six of them would be doomed without guns.

“Let’s go home.”

On the way back, the atmosphere was visibly better with a whole stag slung over their shoulders.

“Brother Shoushan, don’t eat too much deer meat or your bed’s going to collapse!”

Out of the six, only Shoushan and Xu Feng had wives. Since they didn’t know Xu Feng well, the teasing naturally landed on Shoushan.

Everyone knew deer meat was a powerful tonic. Eat enough, and you’d be up all night.

“Get lost. Worry about yourselves. Quit messing with your sewing kits in bed!”

Shoushan’s comeback was sharp. The group burst out laughing.

“Let’s take the deer to my place. Dawn’s almost here. The sooner we divide it, the sooner we sleep.”

Shoushan’s house had all the tools, and everyone silently agreed.

Xu Feng waved his hand to show he had no objections. Carrying a wild chicken, he went home first to report in safely before returning.
