Chapter 4: Young Girl, Thief!

Luo city.

In a dim alley, a young girl struggled to lift a heavy stone and staggered toward an unconscious figure. Her eyes were filled with hatred as she stared at his pale, sharp-featured face.

Just a few days ago, a mob of refugees had formed a rebel army, attempting to storm the city to loot and slaughter. Her father, the magistrate of Luo city, had led all the government soldiers, constables, and officials to guard the city gate, fighting to the death—only to be killed by the rebels.

In the chaos, she had hidden among the fleeing crowd and witnessed this very man, proudly riding a tall horse behind one of the rebel commanders, swaggering into the city.

That pale, cold face—she would never forget it.

But karma played its hand. After the rebels took the city, the commanders turned on each other in bloody infighting, and he too ended up caught in the disaster.

“Kill him! Avenge Father!” a voice echoed relentlessly in her mind.

She raised the stone, aiming it at his head—but in the end, she couldn’t do it.

Her father had always taught her the principles of being human. It was the rebels who took the city and killed her father. If she wanted revenge, it should be against them.

Taking her anger out on a severely injured man would be inhumane.

“He’s dying anyway. Let him rot.”

Bang!

The girl tossed the stone aside and moved it back to the base of the wall. Then she stepped on it and leapt upward, her dirty fingers just barely catching the edge of the wall. Clenching her teeth, she pulled herself up with her thin arms and eventually climbed over the courtyard wall.

Not long after she disappeared, the body in the corner stirred.

“So this is the world simulated by the Life Simulation System?”

“So real… it’s practically identical to the real world.”

The person lying there was Lu Chen, who had just entered his third life simulation. Looking around, he realized he was in a narrow, dark alley—and he had taken on the form of a twelve- or thirteen-year-old boy.

“Hiss… it hurts!”

As he tried to get up, a sharp pain burst from the back of his head. Reaching back, he found his hand covered in dried blood.

“Looks like the original body must have been ambushed and badly injured. And I was transferred in right at that moment.”

“Strange… why is there no memory from the original body?”

Lu Chen tried to recall the body’s memories but found only a blank slate. He didn’t even know how the body had been ambushed.

Thinking about the wound, he quickly understood—the severe injury to the back of the head likely caused total memory loss.

“With a wound like this, it’s a miracle he didn’t die. Losing memories is a small price.”

Lu Chen tore a strip of cloth from his clothes and wrapped it around the wound. Fortunately, the injury had scabbed over. With some rest, it would heal.

Grrrr…

Just then, his stomach growled loudly, like he hadn’t eaten in days. A wave of hunger surged over him.

“So hungry…”

Lu Chen looked toward the mouth of the alley, thinking about finding something to eat. But as soon as he tried to stand, dizziness overwhelmed him.

With injuries this bad, walking was already difficult—searching for food was out of the question.

“Sigh, it was already miserable crossing into an ancient world. Who would’ve thought the simulated world would be even worse!”

Lu Chen let out a helpless sigh.

Just then, a rustling sound came from atop the wall.

Looking up, he saw a tattered young girl in a worn sheepskin coat leaping down from the wall. She had a millet bun in her mouth and several more in her hands—clearly stolen from inside the courtyard. That coat of hers must have been stolen too.

But that wasn’t important.

What mattered was that she had food.

Lu Chen stared at the millet buns in her hands, licking his cracked lips. He was just too hungry. If he hadn’t been injured, he might’ve tried to snatch one.

The girl looked a few years younger than him—probably just over ten. Two punches would’ve left her crying for hours.

But she merely glanced at him before walking toward the alley’s exit.

Seeing that she was about to leave, Lu Chen panicked and used all his strength to shout, “Thief!”

The girl froze, turned around, and frowned, “You’re the thief! Your whole family are thieves!”

Lu Chen: (???︿???)!

“What a fierce little brat,” he muttered quietly.

At that moment, the girl tossed one of the millet buns at him.

He picked it up and was about to thank her—but she was already gone.

“What a strange little girl,” Lu Chen murmured as he stared at the empty alley entrance.

He couldn’t afford to care anymore. Hugging the bun, he took a big bite.

“Ptooey!”

The moment he bit into it, he spat it all out. The millet bun was horrible—stale and reeking of rot. It was obviously someone’s leftovers from days ago.

“Even servants in the General’s Manor wouldn’t eat something this awful.”

Lu Chen couldn’t help but complain. But he was starving, so he forced himself to eat every last bite of the rotten bun.

After resting for a while, he regained some strength. He stood up and took a few steps—he could now walk normally.

Just then, shouting could be heard faintly from inside the courtyard: “We’ve been robbed!” “Catch the thief!”

Not wanting to be mistaken for the thief, Lu Chen quickly fled the alley.

“My top priority now is to figure out what kind of world this is.”

“If it’s a cultivation world, maybe I can join a sect and become a cultivator.”

“Once the simulation ends, I might gain a cultivation talent—then I can cure my terminal illness and even solve the problem of having only one year left to live.”

That thought filled Lu Chen with anticipation.

The world he had crossed into previously was a low-level martial world.

The cultivation system there went from Ninth Rank up to First Rank, followed by Master and Grandmaster.

For example, Jin’er had the cultivation of a 2nd Rank Profound Vein Realm expert.

In that world, her martial strength made her a formidable warrior—more than enough to protect a frail noble like Lu Chen.

“Too bad Jin’er said I had no talent for martial arts. Even after several days of teaching me stance work, I couldn’t grasp a thing.”

Lu Chen shook his head with a sigh.

After leaving the alley, he began asking around for nearby cultivation sects. But with his filthy appearance and a bandage wrapped around his neck, people thought he was crazy and avoided him like the plague.

After half a day of asking around, he found nothing.

Finally, a kind old woman who was out buying vegetables pitied him and took him to a fortune teller. She pointed to the old man dozing off and said, “Look, this is Luo city’s famous old immortal. If you want to learn immortal techniques, ask him.”

After she left, the fortune teller yawned awake. Seeing someone standing in front of his stall, he quickly stroked his beard and put on a sage-like air.

Noticing that Lu Chen was still staring blankly, the old man cleared his throat and said, “Young hero, I see your forehead is dark—you must be facing a disaster of bloodshed!”

“For just ten copper coins, I can divine your fate and help you avert the misfortune!”

As a transmigrator, Lu Chen naturally recognized this scam.

“Divine your grandma’s legs! You’re the one facing disaster—your whole family’s facing disaster!”

With that, Lu Chen turned and walked away.

Fortune teller: (???︿???)!
