Chapter 8: She Just Wants to Refuse Joining the Team

When Lu Ning felt like she really couldn’t endure anymore, Qin Xiang finally showed up, late as always.

Qin Xiang ran over while apologizing sweetly, “Sorry, I was discussing the competition with sixth brother earlier and lost track of time.”

Lu Bei replied calmly, “It’s fine. At least you’re contributing to the family, unlike some ungrateful brat.”

The driver spoke gently, “It’s alright, I’ll drive faster.”

But in the end, they were still late.

When they ran to the classroom door, they were caught by the homeroom teacher.

Qin Xiang, pale and panting heavily, said, “I’m sorry, teacher. It was my fault for delaying time and making Sister Ning late too.”

Lu Ning kept her face expressionless and said nothing.

The homeroom teacher looked at them both but spoke kindly to Qin Xiang, “I understand. No need to explain so much. Go on in.”

“Thank you, teacher.”

Lu Ning followed inside, but the teacher’s stern voice came behind her, “Lu Ning, don’t drag Qin Xiang down with you again. This better not happen again!”

Lu Ning turned around. “Teacher, Qin Xiang just explained clearly. She made us late.”

“Enough. I know your attitude very well. Stop making excuses or you can stand for the whole class.”

Lu Ning didn’t want to miss class. She was already far behind.

She stayed silent, walked into the classroom, her mood sinking to the bottom.

She couldn’t wait for the exams to be over so she could finally escape from all this.

During lunch break, Qin Xiang was surrounded by many classmates, boasting about her time with the professional team, making everyone envious.

Her little followers mocked Lu Ning, “Some people are probably just jealous of Qin Xiang, which is why they purposely dragged their feet and made them late.”

Qin Xiang kept smiling, but she didn’t explain this time.

Lu Ning lay on her desk, resting, ignoring them all.

After school, Qin Xiang walked past Lu Ning, deliberately showing off, “I’m going to the training camp again today.”

Lu Ning quietly packed her books and left the classroom.

Qin Xiang watched Lu Ning’s back, a look of satisfaction on her face.

She said to her followers, “The homework today—same as always. Help me finish it, and don’t let the teacher find out.”

“Don’t worry, you just focus on chasing your dream at the training camp. We’ll cover for you.”

“Thanks. I won’t treat you badly.”

Qin Xiang left happily. This time, she would step on Lu Ning and prove she was the most deserving daughter of the Lu family.

…

Lu Ning carried her backpack and went straight to the infirmary.

Ji Chiqian sat on the chair, his handsome face carrying a hint of amusement. “Need something?”

“Ahem… I came to do my homework. Please take me in!”

Lu Ning walked in as if she owned the place, as long as he didn’t kick her out.

Ji Chiqian was surprised by how at ease she was.

He had thought she was timid and wouldn’t dare come back.

But when she asked him questions, she still got scolded.

“Can your brain stop being like a sieve? Whatever you learn just leaks right out.”

“In the future, don’t ask me basic questions. Figure them out yourself.”

Lu Ning didn’t argue a word, writing everything down obediently.

The room was quiet, and her stomach suddenly growled loudly.

She blushed furiously. She had eaten a piece of bread earlier, but she was still hungry.

Ji Chiqian glanced at the time and ordered some takeout. “Eat first.”

Lu Ning sat across from him and noticed the scar on his wrist again. She couldn’t help but ask, “When did your car accident happen? Was it serious?”

Ji Chiqian silently opened the takeout and placed it on the table.

He looked at Lu Ning, his eyes hazy. “Many years ago.”

“Me too. My parents died in that accident. After that, it was just me and my brothers.”

Lu Ning recalled how much she used to rely on her brothers, a touch of self-mockery flashing in her eyes.

After her parents died, she and her brothers lived a hard life for a while, and their bond was good then.

But everything changed after Qin Xiang appeared.

Ji Chiqian’s grip on his chopsticks tightened. “What’s your plan now?”

“I want to get into Yunda, leave this city, and start a new life.”

“Big dreams. With your current grades, you’ve got no hope for Yunda.”

“There’s still time. I’ll work hard.”

Ji Chiqian looked at her for a moment, then lowered his gaze. His voice was cold. “Don’t ask me simple questions again.”

Lu Ning smiled faintly. That meant… she could still ask him questions, right?

For several days in a row, Lu Ning stayed in the infirmary after school, doing her homework before going home.

Meanwhile, Qin Xiang started slacking in class, distracted by her game training, even sleeping during lessons.

But since she was the teacher’s favorite, she just said she wasn’t feeling well, and the teacher didn’t pursue it.

Lu Ning saw Qin Xiang showing off photos from the training camp and videos of her playing games with her brothers. Their game IDs were all matching.

Just like in her previous life—except she wasn’t part of it this time.

“Not doing your homework properly, yet still thinking of playing games?”

Ji Chiqian walked over and saw the game video on her phone.

Lu Ning shook her head. “No, I was just looking. My priority now is studying.”

“Next week is the monthly exam. If you make it into the top 100, you can play games.”

Lu Ning looked up and smiled. “Then, master, will you play with me?”

She knew Ji Chiqian also played this game.

Ji Chiqian lowered his gaze slightly, his side profile still as handsome as ever.

“Long time since I played. Let’s talk after you make it into the top 100.”

“It’s a deal.”

Lu Ning looked at Ji Chiqian’s back. She had to get into the top 100. After all, Ji Chiqian looked like someone amazing.

She had been great at games in her past life too.

Maybe she could impress Ji Chiqian in the game and regain a little of her self-esteem.

Lu Ning suddenly felt a bit of excitement.

After finishing her homework and returning home, she walked into the hall only to see her second brother, Lu Nanfeng, sitting on the sofa.

Her heart skipped. Why was he back so early?

Weren’t they all supposed to be training at the camp and coming back late?

Lu Nanfeng looked up, his tone serious. “Where have you been? It’s so late!”

Lu Ning’s heart tightened. She couldn’t let them find out she was studying in the infirmary.

She didn’t want to lose the only peaceful place she had left.

She looked down at the floor. “I went to an off-campus study room. There are more people there, better study atmosphere.”

“Give me your bag.”

Lu Ning handed it over and watched her second brother flip through her notebooks, seeing the dense notes and error corrections.

Lu Nanfeng looked skeptical.

The butler had reported that Lu Ning hadn’t been coming home on time these days, and they didn’t know where she went.

He didn’t expect she was actually studying.

Lu Nanfeng put down the bag. “Ning Ning, we need to talk.”

“Second brother, what do you want to talk about?”

Lu Nanfeng looked at the quiet Lu Ning in front of him and suddenly felt she had changed a lot, though he couldn’t tell exactly where.

In the past, Lu Ning would’ve cried pitifully and complained.

But now, she said nothing.

He felt Lu Ning was becoming more and more uncontrollable.

Lu Nanfeng spoke, “Recently, Xiang Xiang has been improving rapidly. If you train with us, you’ll improve too. You have talent. You can spare some time for the training camp. It won’t affect your studies. Isn’t it nice for our family to work together? Big brother will be happy to see us united.”

Lu Ning lowered her head, a mocking look in her eyes.

She firmly replied, “I don’t want to join the team.”

“Lu Ning, Qin Xiang is part of our family, and so are you. We should advance and retreat together, not isolate her. After all, her father saved your life!”

Lu Nanfeng just didn’t understand. He had given her so many chances, yet she didn’t know how to cherish them.

They were good to Qin Xiang to repay a debt on Lu Ning’s behalf!

The hall was suffocatingly quiet.

Lu Ning clenched her fists tightly. She was almost at her limit.

To hell with it!

Lu Ning spoke with sarcasm, “Second brother, would you only be satisfied if I gave this life to Qin Xiang?”
