Chapter 116: Foolish Host:

Lu Ye glanced at Bai Qiulan, who looked utterly dejected, and then at Shen Xitong, who wore an expression of deep respect.

“Do as you please. I have a battle to fight,” he said, his figure vanishing instantly.

“Wait! As husband and wife, we should face it together!” Shen Xitong turned into a stream of light, instantly merging back into Lu Ye’s body.

Only Bai Qiulan was left standing there, staring blankly into space.

Indeed. She was Lu Ye’s master. Her only duty was to fulfill her role as his master. She had no right to interfere in other matters. Shen Xitong, this mysterious newcomer, had treated her with impeccable respect, observing all proper protocols. There wasn’t a single fault to be found in her behavior.

By all accounts, Bai Qiulan should have been relieved—relieved that Lu Ye had found someone as proper and poised as Shen Xitong to be his Dao companion. Unlike the rebellious Yue Hongling, who constantly tried to drag her into messy entanglements.

And yet… why did her heart feel so heavy?

Wasn’t everything supposed to be returning to the way it should be?

…

Bai Qiulan walked away, dazed and disoriented.

Perhaps even she didn’t want to admit it—deep down, she wanted to use the unspoken rules of propriety to bind Lu Ye, to make him feel indebted to her.

After all, love often arises from a constant sense of guilt.

But true love… true love was about both parties striving to ensure the other feels no guilt at all.

Now, Shen Xitong had taken that very mountain of moral responsibility and placed it squarely on Bai Qiulan’s shoulders.

Weren’t you the one who didn’t want Lu Ye to have any improper thoughts about you?

How laughable. After their betrayal, if Lu Ye still harbored improper thoughts about them, wouldn’t that make him a spineless fool?

Lu Ye could tolerate a woman’s stubbornness, her capriciousness, even her temper—because he lacked love and didn’t understand that true love should bring unparalleled happiness to both sides.

Love isn’t just about tolerance.

Right now, Lu Ye had not a single improper thought toward his master. And he hoped she would likewise harbor no such thoughts about him.

Moral principles above all!

The grand path of heaven and earth above all!

Suddenly, Bai Qiulan spat out a mouthful of blood, which instantly froze into ice crystals.

The chaos-infused poison of the Taiyin Body had erupted once more.

…

Lu Ye arrived at the summit of Dao Peak.

The gathering there included not only the disciples of Dao Peak but also those from the Supreme Sword Sect, the Central Plains Empire, and even Jie Sect.

However, the Yin-Yang Law Sect had chosen not to send anyone.

The rift between them and Dao Sect ran deep. Without the mediation of the Eternal Teachings, they had little reason to join forces.

If the Eternal Teachings had intervened, things might have been different. United, the human sects could have created a legendary alliance to resist the alien coalition—a story that would be celebrated for millennia.

But without the Eternal Teachings’ involvement?

Hmph! Why should Dao Sect, with its middling strength, claim leadership?

As Lu Ye approached, he was greeted by Liu Changfeng, who asked eagerly, “Lu Ye, do you know the Vermillion Bird?”

The Vermillion Bird?

Of course, everyone saw her as a divine beast. Only the bird herself insisted she was a member of the demon race, even giving herself the title “Vermillion Bird Demon Emperor.”

“She’s here?”

Lu Ye didn’t immediately answer Liu Changfeng’s question, instead focusing on why the Vermillion Bird had come.

“Not exactly here. She hasn’t entered Dao Sect but is circling nearby. She claimed to know you and brought information that the demon coalition has already mobilized from the Supreme Empire and is advancing rapidly toward Dao Sect.”

“The information is likely 70% accurate. We should prepare for battle.”

“I’ll go check on the Vermillion Bird myself,” Lu Ye replied.

“I’ll have two Grandmasters accompany you!”

“No need. A weak Vermillion Bird poses no threat to me.”

Why was Lu Ye interested in meeting the Vermillion Bird?

For one, during the Tianjiao Ancient Battlefield, he’d sensed the aura of the Myriad Spirit Demon Emperor on her.

Though faint, it was unmistakable. Having slain countless beings parasitized by the Demon Emperor in his previous life, Lu Ye had developed an acute sense for such things.

Was the Vermillion Bird truly parasitized by the Demon Emperor?

And then there was the other reason…

“Bring me to her!” Shen Xitong’s voice rang out from within him, her tone eager. “Let me face her in battle!”

“Host, my beloved, most brilliant host…”

Yes, that summed it up.

This system had just recently gained a physical form and was currently in her most combative phase. She was itching to unleash her full power on the Vermillion Bird.

To be honest, the system had witnessed every moment of Lu Ye’s past life. She knew his every deed, every thought.

Back then, though, she’d been a simple-minded system. Later, after merging with heavenly laws, she’d lost all emotion and had been unable to assist her “host” in any meaningful way.

To the system, her host was nothing but a fool—wholeheartedly kind to everyone, unable to bear seeing others in pain.

Take Chu Ling, for instance. When her Chu Sword Manor was destroyed by the formidable Li Jian Shangren, Lu Ye, though powerless to defeat Li Jian Shangren, could have told her the truth. That her adoptive family was plotting to turn her into sword-forging material.

But no. Lu Ye wanted to protect her from such a cruel reality.

Or Yue Hongling—when she risked her life for Feng Wuxie in the Silent Forest, he could have simply let her face the consequences. Rescuing her as a hero afterward would have brought her closer to him.

But no, Lu Ye had to intervene, even at his own expense.

His inability to respect others’ choices and his unrelenting savior complex made him infuriatingly foolish.

And yet, that was also what made him admirable.

For the sake of flawed love, he gave his all. A fool, yes, but one who earned respect.

Lu Ye wasn’t aware of the system’s musings. He was preoccupied with verifying if the Vermillion Bird was parasitized.

“Wait…  Am I being influenced by this dog system?” He thought.

The Vermillion Bird’s condition had nothing to do with him. Whether she was parasitized or not…

“Host, you’re the absolute best!” the system chirped.

Lu Ye sighed.

“Be careful. If there’s any danger, retreat to the sect immediately,” Liu Changfeng cautioned.

“Understood!”

Lu Ye’s figure vanished, slipping through an opening in the sect’s protective array.

His divine sense spread across the surrounding area like a tidal wave, quickly locking onto the Vermillion Bird’s location.

“Let me handle this!”

The system materialized as Shen Xitong once more, radiating a dazzling five-colored light as she flew toward the Vermillion Bird.

Her attire became tattered, her face marked with blood and sorrow, yet her beauty remained peerless.

Murmuring softly, she repeated, “Brother Lu Ye… Brother Lu Ye…”

She flew straight toward the Vermillion Bird.
