Chapter 13: If You Can’t Forgive Me, Slap Me Again:

Just as Lin Xiaohan was starting to think Yang Lu had stood her up, a familiar voice broke the silence.

She looked up to see him sitting across from her. Seeing that he’d actually come, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of happiness. He still cared about her, after all.

Unfortunately, Lin Xiaohan had no idea that Yang Lu was there solely to complete his system mission.

“So, why did you ask me here? Just for dinner?” Yang Lu glanced at the lavish spread on the table, but he didn’t pick up his chopsticks. Instead, he looked at Lin Xiaohan with an aloof expression.

There was no trace of warmth in his voice, and he was nothing like the devout simp he had once been.

Hearing the coldness in his tone, Lin Xiaohan felt a pang in her heart. But remembering all he had done for her, she knew she had been wrong.

Looking down with a blush on her face, she said quietly, “I invited you here to apologize.”

“What I did before was wrong. I hope you can forgive me.”

Anyone who knew Lin Xiaohan well would be stunned to hear her say such words. Since when did the proud and haughty Lin Xiaohan ever apologize?

The concept of “apology” simply didn’t exist in her dictionary. Even when she knew she was wrong, she would find ways to make up for it without ever lowering herself to say sorry.

Yet here she was, apologizing to Yang Lu—a truly unexpected turn of events.

Yang Lu was equally surprised by her apology.

Was she serious?

She was the main female lead, and he had slapped her. Now she was apologizing to him, and inviting him to dinner?

Where was the headstrong main female lead with flawless morals?

But did she really think he’d forgive her with just an apology? Don’t make him laugh—he was the villain here.

“Shut up, Lin Xiaohan!” he snapped. “Your apology means nothing to me, so save it! Do you know how pathetic you look right now? Ha!”

Before she could continue, Yang Lu’s mocking voice cut her off. He grabbed a lobster from the table, cracked it open, and started eating, completely ignoring her presence.

Witnessing this scene, the people nearby couldn’t help but cringe. Some even clenched their fists, resisting the urge to punch him. Here was a beautiful woman humbling herself to apologize, and he had not only rejected her apology but mocked her. And, while he refused to forgive her, he was happily devouring the food she had ordered.

If they were in Lin Xiaohan’s shoes, they’d never tolerate this kind of treatment. This really was paying for one’s own humiliation.

Lin Xiaohan’s face went pale, her eyes red as she stammered, “Yang Lu, that’s enough! How can you treat me this way? I… I’ve already apologized, so why are you still humiliating me? Why?!”

Her heart ached unbearably. She hadn’t expected that not only would he reject her apology, but he would also mock her. She had put her pride aside, but instead of meeting her halfway, he had ground her dignity into the dirt.

She was struggling to process this. Maybe inviting him here tonight was the biggest mistake of her life.

“What’s wrong? Can’t handle it now?” Yang Lu put down the lobster. “What I’ve done to you is nothing compared to what you put me through. Not even a tenth.”

She faltered at his words, feeling as though she had been struck. She thought back and realized that he was right. The way she had treated him in the past had been far worse than how he was treating her now.

Yet even this small dose of her own medicine was more than she could bear. But Yang Lu had endured it for years. She could only imagine the suffering he must have felt. The realization hit her like a knife to the heart, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

Through her tears, she whispered, “I’m sorry… truly sorry.”

“I was arrogant and selfish, and I did so many inhumane things.”

“If you can’t forgive me, then slap me again. I, Lin Xiaohan, won’t say a word against it.”

The slap he had given her earlier had left a lingering bitterness in her heart, but now, that feeling had disappeared completely. All she felt was regret. If she were in his position, she’d want to slap herself too.

If he couldn’t let go of the past, then she was willing to let him slap her again.
