Chapter 4: Shen Lian Has Gone Mad

Inside the Law Enforcement Hall of the Heavenly Feather Sect, the seats were already packed with inner sect disciples who had come to watch Shen Lian being punished. For them, aside from cultivation, the most entertaining gossip in the sect was witnessing Shen Lian getting disciplined.

Besides, Ye Fan had been poisoned—this was no ordinary matter for the Heavenly Feather Sect. The Divine Algorithm Operator of the Heavenly Secrets Pavilion had once deduced that Ye Fan was a Child of Destiny blessed with immense fortune, destined to reach the pinnacle of this world. Therefore, the Heavenly Feather Sect had gone all out to cultivate Ye Fan, channeling every available resource toward him without restraint.

Their goal was simple—when Ye Fan reached the summit, the Heavenly Feather Sect could ride his influence and stand proudly atop the world.

Ye Fan had thus become the sect’s most heavily protected figure. Any action that posed a threat to him had to be immediately and completely eradicated.

“Cough, cough, cough…” Ye Fan, seated at the interrogation platform, looked pale and coughed from time to time, drawing deep concern from the surrounding Elders.

“This Shen Lian deserves to die! To think he went so far as to poison Ye Fan! There’s no forgiving him this time!” said Elder Qing Shuang, a female cultivator in her early forties with graying hair, the Second Elder of the sect.

“Hmph, if that clueless girl Shen Yunchu hadn’t been shielding that wretch so blindly, would Ye Fan be in such a state now?” sneered Elder Qing Yun, the Third Elder.

“I’ve long known Shen Lian was no good. Today, we must execute this villain. Otherwise, how will our Heavenly Feather Sect stand firm on the Primordial Continent?” Elder Qing Shan, the Fourth Elder, added with righteous fury.

The thousands of inner sect disciples present all expressed their disapproval and condemnation of Shen Lian’s actions.

They couldn’t understand—Ye Fan was such a kind person, so why had Shen Lian targeted him time and time again?

Of course, some people knew the real reason—Ye Fan had won the hearts of seven exceptional Senior Sisters, which left Shen Lian harboring deep resentment.

Ye Fan watched the scene unfold, and the corner of his mouth curved slightly with a subtle smirk.

Although he didn’t know why Shen Lian had suddenly acted, disrupting his plan, it didn’t matter. The poison’s effect had been mild, and thanks to timely treatment, there was no lasting harm. After just two days of rest, he’d be fully recovered.

As for Shen Lian, there was no doubt—he was as good as dead today.

“Shen Lian, once you’re dead, no one in this world will remember the contributions you made to the sect. Before long, everything you’ve done over hundreds of years will become the glory I wear on my back.”

Indeed, the reason Ye Fan so desperately wanted Shen Lian gone was because of the tremendous contributions Shen Lian had made to the Heavenly Feather Sect. Especially the seven unparalleled prodigies he had nurtured—each of them stood at the peak of their respective fields. Just that alone was enough to make Shen Lian’s name legendary across the Primordial Continent.

Fortunately, all seven Senior Sisters were on his side. Without him even needing to say anything, they had already begun arranging the historical narrative in his favor. Once Shen Lian died, and the mundane world gradually forgot him over the decades and centuries to come, Ye Fan would become the most influential person in the Heavenly Feather Sect—perhaps even the entire continent.

By then, the tale of the seven prodigies rising to greatness due to their own fortune would be told throughout the continent.

After all, time was something cultivators never lacked.

“Why isn’t Shen Lian here yet? Does he not even respect the Law Enforcement Hall anymore?” Elder Qing Shuang, the most hot-tempered among them, immediately grew impatient.

Ye Fan quickly put on a pitiful expression and said to Elder Qing Shuang, “Second Elder, there’s no need to blow this out of proportion. I believe Senior Brother Shen didn’t mean to hurt me. As long as he sincerely apologizes, that should be enough.”

Elder Qing Shuang’s face filled with heartache, “Fan’er, he tried to kill you, and you’re still defending him?”

Elder Qing Shan said, “Fan’er, poisoning a fellow sect member is no longer just a minor personal dispute—it’s a direct violation of sect rules.”

Elder Qing Shuang said, “Fan’er, leave it to us. No matter what, we’ll give you a satisfying answer today!”

Hearing this, Ye Fan stopped pretending to argue. Internally, he sneered coldly.

Shen Lian, there’s no escaping your fate today.

“Strange… why hasn’t Shen Lian shown up yet? It’s been nearly an hour.” Grand Elder Qing Lan, who had been silent until now, finally frowned in impatience.

“Send two more disciples to find out what’s going on.”

Whoosh—at that moment, a gust of wind swept into the hall from outside, forcing some of the weaker disciples to squint against the breeze.

Then came a bold, arrogant voice from outside the hall.

“No need.”

As the words landed, Shen Lian stepped in, fanning himself with a folding fan as he walked steadily into the Law Enforcement Hall.

Everyone’s eyes lit up.

Shen Lian wore a brand-new, elegant robe of black and white, highlighting an aura of nobility that was hard to ignore. The disdainful expression on his face made people instinctively avert their gaze.

Shen Lian had always been strikingly handsome, but his usual unkempt and disheveled appearance had caused people to overlook it. Now, in this refined attire, he looked dazzling.

Ye Fan was stunned and instantly filled with intense jealousy.

Back then, he couldn’t stand how Shen Lian carried himself like someone superior, so he subtly hinted to the seven Senior Sisters that Shen Lian should stop wearing such grand clothes—to crush his self-esteem.

But now…

“Whatever, let this be your final moment of pride before death.”

With that thought, Ye Fan’s mood calmed again.

“Shen Lian, you’ve publicly poisoned your fellow sect member. Do you admit your crime?” Elder Qing Shuang immediately barked as Shen Lian stepped into the center of the hall.

But Shen Lian responded coldly, “You old candle—drop the act already. You all schemed so hard to set up this pathetic trap. All just to kill me and pave the way for that worthless Ye Fan, right? If you want my life, come take it yourselves. Why bother playing these disgusting games? Look at you all—acting like brothel whores, pretending to be dignified.”

The hall fell completely silent.

Many disciples’ jaws dropped wide enough to fit a whole egg.

Everyone remembered Shen Lian as a petty, despicable man, but always courteous and well-mannered. No one had expected him to hurl such crude insults in front of everyone.

Elder Qing Shuang finally recovered from the shock, stood up and roared, “You little bastard! What did you just say? Say it again if you dare!”

Shen Lian snapped his fan shut and said coldly, “Shut up, you old beast. You’d better not get worked up. We both know why you called me here today—you want me dead. These childish tricks of yours might fool these brainless ants watching, letting them believe I’m some vile, despicable criminal who deserves to die. But this kind of performance? I’ve seen it hundreds, even thousands of times over the past century. Why should I waste time defending myself for the sake of your so-called justice?”

With that, Shen Lian turned his back, gently fanning himself again, looking utterly unbothered.

Elder Qing Shuang couldn’t believe Shen Lian had become so unhinged. He was nothing like the submissive figure she used to manipulate with ease.

Humiliated in front of everyone by a former inner sect disciple who had been expelled, she instantly drew her sword in fury. “You… I’ll kill you!”

“Calm down, Junior Sister!” Grand Elder Qing Lan quickly stopped her from losing control.

“Shen Lian! You defy your Elders! Do you understand your words just now violated the sect’s rules?”

With his back turned, Shen Lian simply raised a finger.

“You have no right to speak of respect. Think about everything you’ve done. Calling you beasts in human skin is an insult to beasts. In my eyes, you’re less than animals. What makes you think you deserve my respect? Just standing here talking to you scum is already lowering myself. If you don’t want to hear it, go deafen yourselves first!”

The Law Enforcement Hall fell into deathly silence.

No one could believe it.

Shen Lian, who had always been cowardly and submissive, had just directly cursed out the revered Elders?

At that moment, only one thought ran through everyone’s minds.

Shen Lian had gone mad!

Otherwise, how could they explain this complete transformation?

But only Shen Lian himself knew—he wasn’t crazy at all.

Explaining anything to these old candles was useless. Even if he laid out evidence proving his innocence, they’d still justify their actions with nonsense like, “Let’s ignore the facts for now. Isn’t it true you’ve made mistakes too?”

Since there was no way to prove his innocence—why bother?

He might as well go all out.

After all, after living through nearly a hundred lifetimes of madness, how could he let these pathetic worms dictate anything to him?

Even if a tiger had fallen from grace, how could it let pigs and dogs trample on its pride?
