Chapter 54: You’re Getting Married, But the Groom Isn’t Me:

Chen Lang looked down at the paper in his hands, its title boldly printed: “Gentlemen’s Agreement!” Alongside the title, there was a small, cute bear illustration.

The agreement read:

    • Chen Lang and Xiao Mingyue have an obligation to maintain the appearance of a marriage in front of outsiders.

    • They must respect each other’s privacy while gradually building their relationship.

    • Neither party is allowed to enter the other’s room at night without permission.

At the bottom were spaces for their signatures labeled “Women’s signature: _______” and “Men’s signature: _______.”

Chen Lang couldn’t help but chuckle as he held the “Gentlemen’s Agreement” in his hand. “So, you want to keep up the pretense of a marriage without fulfilling any of a wife’s duties?” he asked, amused.

Xiao Mingyue explained softly: “It’s just temporary… After all, I’m a girl, and I need to have an emotional foundation first!”

“And you promised me just now that we’d give each other some time! Is that okay?”

Xiao Mingyue, who was always so composed and distant in front of others, suddenly showed a rare moment of softness.

She pulled on Chen Lang’s arm, gently shaking it as she pleaded.

Seeing her act so sweet and vulnerable, Chen Lang was momentarily stunned. This was a side of her he had never seen before.

“Alright, alright! I’ll do as you say.” He replied, waving his hand as he signed the agreement.

“Yay!!!” Xiao Mingyue exclaimed, grabbing his arm and giving it a few quick shakes as if sealing their agreement.

“A man of his word!” She said with a grin, then leaned in and gave him a light kiss on the cheek. “You’re the best, husband!” She added playfully, before quickly slipping on her slippers and heading to the door.

“Make sure to get some rest, husband! You’ll be taking me to work tomorrow morning!” She called out as she closed the bedroom door behind her and hurried upstairs.

Chen Lang touched the spot on his cheek where she had kissed him, feeling a mix of amusement and bewilderment.

‘Damn, she got me!’ He thought, realizing she had just charmed him.

But then he smiled and shook his head.

He couldn’t quite figure out what Xiao Mingyue was thinking.

Glancing back at the “Gentlemen’s Agreement” in his hand, a sudden realization hit him.

‘Wait a minute… I’m the villain!’ he reminded himself.

Since when did villains stick to gentlemen’s agreements? Villains were supposed to be cunning and ruthless, not bound by some polite contract!

As the thought took hold, a sly smile spread across Chen Lang’s face.

Through this agreement, he had discovered a potential weakness in Xiao Mingyue, and with that, he began to formulate a plan to steer the plot back on track.

…

Meanwhile, in a bustling street in Nanjiang City, Ye Chen sat in a small ramen shop, quietly eating his meal.

His mind was filled with thoughts of the day’s events.

There’s no way Xiao Mingyue and Chen Lang are really in love, he thought to himself. That’s absolutely impossible!

The only reason Xiao Mingyue had spoken so harshly to him was clear—Chen Lang must have anticipated that Ye Chen would cause trouble, and so he forced Xiao Mingyue to say those things in advance.

Ye Chen was convinced that this was the case.

It explained why, after disrupting the wedding, he had managed to walk away unscathed.

He hadn’t been detained by the police or faced any serious consequences. It was all because Xiao Mingyue had intervened on his behalf.

In his mind, Ye Chen believed that Xiao Mingyue had pretended to have a discussion with Chen Lang, convincing him to let Ye Chen go.

The excuse was that Chen Lang, being so considerate, didn’t want to ruin everyone’s mood by making a scene.

But in reality, Xiao Mingyue had placed Chen Lang in a moral bind, making it impossible for him to target Ye Chen without appearing petty.

After what she said, Chen Lang would look stingy if he went after me again!

Ye Chen reasoned.

Given the animosity between them, there was no way Chen Lang would have let me off so easily unless Xiao Mingyue had protected him.

The more Ye Chen thought about it, the more convinced he became.

Everything suddenly made sense. Xiao Mingyue must be deeply saddened by the situation.

She clearly still had feelings for him but was forced to hide them to protect herself.

She had silently taken on everything and faced the demon that was Chen Lang all on her own.

As he imagined Xiao Mingyue enduring all this suffering in silence,

Ye Chen felt a surge of emotion.

“Don’t worry, Mingyue! I understand everything you’ve done for me. I’ll rescue you from Chen Lang’s clutches as soon as possible!”

Fantasizing about reuniting with Xiao Mingyue, Ye Chen imagined her running into his arms, and the thought made his blood boil with determination.

At this moment, the door to the noodle shop swung open, and a group of four or five burly men walked in.

They took seats at the table next to Ye Chen and ordered food from the owner.

The man sitting closest to Ye Chen pulled out his phone and started playing a video, turning the volume up loud.

Soon, the sounds of a popular internet song filled the shop:

“You’re getting married,

The groom is not me,

In this lonely corner,

I secretly wipe away tears,

You’re getting married,

The groom is not me,

Too much sadness,

Who should I tell?”

The song, though not exactly a masterpiece, had a certain charm, especially with the singer’s thick accent. It was the kind of tune that, while grating at first, would get stuck in your head after a few listens.

The burly man seemed to find the video particularly entertaining, replaying it over and over with a grin on his face. The lyrics kept repeating.

Ye Chen’s grip on his chopsticks tightened as he listened to the song. The timing of this song, its lyrics—they all struck him right where it hurt the most. The lyrics reminded him of the humiliation he had endured at the wedding that day, and the catchy melody felt like a blade twisting in his chest.

The man’s grin seemed to mock him, as if laughing at the fact that the woman he loved was now married to someone else, while he could do nothing but sit there helplessly.

As the song played on and on, Ye Chen’s anger finally reached its boiling point.

His eyes glowed with fury as he growled, his voice low and threatening, “Hey! If you don’t turn off that phone, I can’t guarantee what’s going to happen next.”
