Chapter 82: A Dramatic Twist:

Shen Dahai and Wang Xiuzhi were the parents of Shen Weiwei. The couple, both approaching their fifties, were spending a quiet evening at home, cooling themselves with an electric fan while watching television. Their peaceful moment was interrupted by a knock on the door, sparking their curiosity.

When they heard that the visitor was a friend of Shen Weiwei, they hesitated only briefly before opening the door.

Standing outside was Lu Yu, who immediately extended his hand with an enthusiastic smile. His eagerness made the elderly couple a little uneasy.

“You said… you’re Weiwei’s friend?” Shen Dahai asked, his tone filled with doubt.

“Yes, my name is Lu Yu,” he replied smoothly.

Following a prompt from the system, Lu Yu gestured behind him. “These are gifts for you both.”

The two bodyguards accompanying him immediately stepped forward and carried several packages into Shen Dahai’s home.

Lu Yu had been mindful not to buy anything too extravagant on this first visit. He had picked up some nutritional supplements for the elderly from the supermarket, a couple of bottles of Maotai liquor, and a jade bracelet. Among these, the most expensive item was a can of premium tea leaves, costing around seven to eight thousand yuan.

Shen Dahai, a man who appreciated good liquor and fine tea, was taken aback by the unexpected visit. Though tempted, he instinctively wanted to refuse the gifts, as he had never met Lu Yu before.

However, Wang Xiuzhi was quicker to respond.

“Oh, you didn’t have to bring anything!” she exclaimed, though her hands were already reaching out to accept the gifts.

Seeing how thoughtful Lu Yu was, Wang Xiuzhi’s impression of him improved instantly. She happily welcomed him inside, despite her earlier polite refusal.

In Su Hao’s original plot, the parents-in-law played a crucial role.

After shaking hands with them, Lu Yu received another system prompt.

Wang Xiuzhi’s personality was a bit materialistic, but at the core, she wanted the best for her daughter. She had always been a strong advocate for Shen Weiwei’s separation from Su Hao, rather than reconciliation.

“Hey, aren’t your bodyguards coming in to sit for a while?” Wang Xiuzhi asked curiously as she watched them leave right after dropping off the gifts.

“They have other things to take care of,” Lu Yu said casually.

At that moment, Shen Dahai’s startled voice rang out.

“My goodness… is this Maotai?”

In this era, Maotai was not as exorbitantly priced as it had been in Lu Yu’s previous life. What he had purchased was just the standard Feitian Maotai. Even so, each bottle was worth around 2,000 yuan—an amount equal to one month of Shen Weiwei’s salary and nearly one and a half months of Shen Dahai’s earnings.

“Your name is Lu Yu, right?” Shen Dahai looked at him intently. “This must have cost you a fortune.”

“It wasn’t much,” Lu Yu replied nonchalantly. “Less than 2,000 yuan per bottle.”

Although his cash reserves had dwindled significantly, he wasn’t worried. He owned a five-star hotel that generated daily profits, so the 30,000 to 40,000 yuan he had spent today was nothing to him.

“Two… two thousand?” Wang Xiuzhi was stunned.

Shen Dahai quickly returned the bottle to its gift bag and tried to hand it back.

“No, no, this is too expensive. We can’t accept it!” he said firmly.

Despite his curiosity about what Maotai tasted like, Shen Dahai was an honest man. He firmly believed in not accepting gifts without merit.

“It’s really no big deal,” Lu Yu assured him, picking up another package. “Besides, Auntie, this one for you is even more expensive than the Maotai.”

Saying this, he handed Wang Xiuzhi a beautifully crafted brocade box.

Hearing that the gift was for her—and was even more valuable than the Maotai—Wang Xiuzhi wasted no time in taking it.

Inside was a white jade bracelet. The price tag had been deliberately left intact: 22,888 yuan.

Seeing the number, even Wang Xiuzhi, who had a tendency to favor wealth, was momentarily speechless.

“More than… 20,000 yuan? My goodness…” she gasped. Then, as if realizing something, she turned to Lu Yu with newfound curiosity.

“Xiao Lu, what does your family do? How can you afford to give away such expensive gifts?”

Lu Yu smiled. “We’re in real estate. My father owns a real estate company. You’ve probably heard of ‘Future City’—that’s one of our developments.”

“Future City?!”

Both Shen Dahai and Wang Xiuzhi exchanged glances, their minds racing.

Future City was one of the most prestigious residential areas in Rongcheng. It was well-known that its developer had multiple high-end properties under their name.

If Lu Yu was telling the truth, then these lavish gifts were indeed mere pocket change to him.

“Xiao Lu, your family is really wealthy, aren’t they?”

Lu Yu simply chuckled.

“Hehe, since Xiao Lu insists, we’ll accept them then,” Wang Xiuzhi finally said, her smile widening.

Even Shen Dahai, though initially reluctant, found himself nodding along. If they continued to refuse, wouldn’t they just be making things awkward for their rich guest?

With the gifts accepted, the atmosphere lightened considerably. The conversation that followed was much more pleasant, as the two elders eagerly inquired about Lu Yu’s relationship with Shen Weiwei.

Lu Yu answered casually while subtly gathering information that wasn’t included in his own plot.

In Su Hao’s plot, there was a particularly melodramatic detail.

Before the protagonist transmigrated into Su Hao’s body, the original Su Hao was a complete scoundrel. Everyone despised him, mocked him, and tried to persuade Shen Weiwei to leave him.

But no matter how terrible Su Hao was, and regardless of how much pressure she faced, Shen Weiwei never abandoned him. She remained determined to change him, hoping he would return to the person he once was.

It was unrealistic. But that was just how the plot was written.

Winning over Shen Weiwei’s family and friends was easy. Winning over Shen Weiwei herself, however, was an entirely different challenge.

Still, Lu Yu wasn’t in a hurry.

He already had a plan.

After chatting for about half an hour, Lu Yu excused himself and left without staying for dinner.

That night, Shen Bin, Shen Weiwei’s younger brother, came home from work. Noticing the assortment of expensive gifts, he was puzzled.

“Mom, where did all this stuff come from?”

Shen Bin was a strong, uneducated man who currently worked at a construction site.

“Your sister’s friend bought them,” Wang Xiuzhi replied.

“A friend? What friend?”

“We don’t know either. Call your sister and ask her.”

Since Shen Weiwei had distanced herself from her family due to conflicts, she neither lived with Su Hao nor frequently visited her parents.

Curious, Shen Bin quickly dialed his sister’s number.

“Sis, when did you get such a rich friend?”

“…What?” Shen Weiwei was taken aback. “What are you talking about?”

“You should see what he bought! Two bottles of Maotai for Dad, a white jade bracelet for Mom, plus tea, tea sets, and health supplements—all worth tens of thousands!”

“Wait… tens of thousands?”

Shen Weiwei was stunned.

She didn’t need him to say more—she already knew who had sent the gifts.

Another favor she owed…

“Did Mom and Dad accept them?”

“What do you think?”

“Why would they take gifts from someone they don’t even know? They—”

Before Shen Bin could finish, Wang Xiuzhi snatched the phone from him.

“Why can’t we accept them?” she snapped. “They’re rich, what’s wrong with them giving us gifts?”

“Mom, you don’t even know—”

“I don’t need to know!” Wang Xiuzhi interrupted. “Tell me, how many years have you been married? Has that useless husband of yours ever given us anything? Not even a fruit basket during festivals!”

“I don’t understand why you’re still with him! If you don’t get a divorce soon, are you waiting for me to die of frustration first?”

“Mom, not this again…”

“I mean it!” Wang Xiuzhi said firmly. “In my opinion, this Xiao Lu seems really interested in you. Why don’t you just divorce Su Hao and be with him instead?”
