You Choose an Adopted Son, I Choose Madness - Chapter 44:
Chapter 44: Su Chen Must Be Dealt With
Su Zhenxing was utterly exhausted.
After being tormented by his deceased mother, who had been dead for thirteen years, and by Su Chen, his son who had been missing for fifteen years and only returned two years ago, he was bruised and battered. He dragged himself back to the bedroom, thinking he could finally rest. But before he could even lie down, his wife, Liu Yanan, started nagging.
With no energy left to wash up, Su Zhenxing collapsed onto the bed.
“If you thought that wasn’t my mother, why didn’t you say so earlier?!”
“You let her beat you up just as obediently as the rest of us!”
“Now that she’s back in the underworld, what’s the point of bringing this up?”
Liu Yanan forced an awkward smile.
“I was just too scared at the time!”
“But the more I think about it now, the more I feel something isn’t right. How could Mom possibly come all the way back from the underworld just to beat us up for that little bastard Su Chen?!”
“Why not?” Su Zhenxing scoffed. “My mother loved Su Chen the most since he was little.”
“She died early because she was heartbroken when Su Chen went missing and couldn’t be found.”
“Now that Su Chen is back…”
“And yet you mistreated him. So, it’s not impossible that my mother would come back just once to stand up for her grandson.”
Saying this, Su Zhenxing sat up in bed and glared at Liu Yanan.
“Liu Yanan, I know you prefer Su Mu, but don’t forget—Su Chen is your biological son.”
“Stop being so obvious about it.”
“If you provoke my mother again, you’ll regret it.”
Liu Yanan sat at her vanity, looking at her own reflection—her once elegant and refined face was now swollen like a pig’s head.
Her hatred for Su Chen deepened.
She had been born into a wealthy family, a pampered young lady before marriage and a prestigious noblewoman after.
When had she ever been beaten like this, let alone humiliated to such an extent?
And all because of Su Chen!
When Su Chen was lost as a child, everyone blamed her, especially her mother-in-law, who scolded her every day.
Now that Su Chen had returned, he constantly embarrassed the family with his insanity. And today, he even summoned his deceased grandmother to beat them all up!
Su Chen was her nemesis!
Staring at her bruised and battered face in the mirror, Liu Yanan clenched her teeth in hatred.
“Zhenxing, don’t you think we should get a Daoist priest to take a look?”
Su Zhenxing narrowed his eyes and asked in a low voice, “Liu Yanan, what are you suggesting?”
Through the mirror, Liu Yanan met his gaze.
“Zhenxing, don’t be so hasty.”
“I’m not saying we should do anything to Mom.”
“But don’t you think it’s strange that Su Chen could summon her?”
“If he can summon our mother, doesn’t that mean he could also summon other wandering spirits?”
“Su Chen has been acting crazy all the time, constantly threatening to fight to the death.”
“If it were just Su Chen alone, we could easily restrain him. We wouldn’t be afraid.”
“But what if, next time, Su Chen summons a vengeful spirit to fight us?”
“Or worse, what if he summons an entire group of them?!”
Su Zhenxing hesitated for a moment.
Liu Yanan had a point.
He could believe that his mother, no matter how much she beat him, wouldn’t actually kill him. She wouldn’t truly want to destroy their entire family.
But if Su Chen summoned other spirits, would those ghosts be as merciful?
“What are you proposing?”
Seeing that her words had struck a chord, Liu Yanan smirked.
Perhaps she had forgotten that her face was currently swollen beyond recognition—she still thought she had the graceful smile of a noblewoman.
But to Su Zhenxing, her pig-headed grin was an eyesore, and he quickly looked away.
“We should find a Daoist priest to deal with Su Chen.”
“First, to cure him of his insanity.”
“And second, to suppress whatever power allows him to summon spirits. If we don’t, who knows what irreversible damage he might bring to our family?”
With a loud thud, Su Zhenxing flopped back onto the bed.
“Fine. You take care of it.”
“I have too many company matters to handle and no energy to spare.”
“Just tell me the results when it’s done.”
“Also, we need to postpone the business gathering to next week.”
“Otherwise, how are we supposed to attend looking like this?!”
“If we show up with these bruises, we’ll become a laughingstock.”
“You’re right. I’ll make the arrangements.”
…
Time passed quickly, and soon it was Tuesday of the following week.
When Su Chen returned to the Su family villa after school, he immediately sensed that something was off.
At the same time, Su Mu, who had been accompanying Su Chen to and from school without ever speaking to him, suddenly smirked at him.
It was a smug, malicious grin.
As if saying: Su Chen, your good days are over.
Su Chen frowned.
He didn’t know exactly what was going on, but he was certain it was something bad for him.
It felt as if the entire Su family had been planning something behind his back.
Perhaps, inside that villa, a trap had been set for him.
Ignoring Su Mu, Su Chen walked straight into the house.
Since it wasn’t yet dinnertime, he went into the living room first.
As soon as he stepped in, he noticed that Su Qiqi, who had been avoiding him these past few days, was no longer acting the same way.
Instead of sneaking away, she remained seated on the couch, unmoving.
When she saw Su Chen enter, she didn’t flinch.
Instead, she smiled.
It was a smug, malicious smile—just like Su Mu’s.
Something was definitely up.
They had clearly done something behind his back.
They all seemed to know what it was—except him.
At that moment, footsteps echoed from upstairs.
Two figures descended the stairs.
One was Liu Yanan, who had finally recovered from her injuries, once again looking like the elegant and wealthy woman she used to be.
She was speaking with great warmth and respect to the other person.
And that person—was a Daoist priest.
He had long white eyebrows and a flowing beard, his face smooth and glowing with health. His hair was tied in a Daoist topknot, and he wore a billowing robe. A wooden sword was strapped to his back.
He had the perfect image of a refined and powerful Daoist master.
In that instant, Su Chen understood everything.
They had hired a Daoist priest to deal with him.
All because of what had happened last Friday, when he pretended to be his deceased grandmother and gave them all a beating.
So, now, they had brought in a priest for revenge?
And judging from the respect Liu Yanan was showing, they had spared no expense.
This priest didn’t seem like an ordinary fraud—he actually looked quite capable.
Su Chen glanced at Liu Yanan and the Daoist priest without saying a word.
He then calmly sat down on the couch.
He hadn’t really summoned his deceased grandmother last time.
So now, he was curious—what exactly could this so-called priest do to him?
