Chapter 6: They Don’t Deserve It

Lin Nuo’er was completely dumbfounded by Gu Zhe.

Who answers like that?

“Wait—what do you mean everything is true? Which sentence is true?”

She was already an impatient person by nature, and now it was something that truly mattered to her. After pulling and pestering him for a while, she ended up getting flustered herself.

“All of them,” Gu Zhe replied, putting on a serious tone.

At that moment, they happened to reach the dormitory building, and Gu Zhe took the opportunity to gently set the annoyed Lin Nuo’er down.

Alright then.

So this was how he wanted to play it?

“Gu Zhe! Do you think this is funny or something?”

Just as she was about to completely lose her temper, Gu Zhe suddenly reached out and patted her head softly.

“You’re always so impatient, always so quick to get worked up,” he said gently. “That’s not a good thing.”

His voice softened, like he was coaxing a mischievous child.

“I’m not teasing you. Everything I said today, every single word—I meant it.”

“Song Yihan has treated me like that for a long time now. It’s been a year. I should’ve seen her clearly by now.”

“Sincerity and effort should be reserved for someone who’s truly worth it. From now on, I just want to take care of the one who’s worth it.”

His gentle gaze, his patient voice, and a hint—barely noticeable—of affection.

To any girl, all of this was like a fatal move.

Looking into Gu Zhe’s deep eyes, Lin Nuo’er suddenly felt that the boy in front of her seemed different again.

In the past, she always thought those eyes of his were clear and pure, like a bubbling hot spring, filled with endless warmth.

But now, his eyes carried a calmness born of experience, a kind of depth that came from having seen the highs and lows of life.

He really did seem like someone who could take good care of her now…

“Hey! Who said you could touch my head?! Only I’m allowed to touch yours!”

Startled, Lin Nuo’er quickly slapped his hand away like a frightened bird.

She was honestly afraid that if he kept being this gentle, she’d completely fall for him and surrender.

“Alright then, go back and rest well. Remember to change your bandages on time.”

As he spoke, Gu Zhe suddenly seemed to remember something. He pulled out his phone and tapped on it a few times.

Seeing this, Lin Nuo’er’s heart instantly sank.

She knew that move all too well.

In the past year, no matter if they were eating together, playing ball, or just chatting, the moment Song Yihan sent a message or called, Gu Zhe would leave her without hesitation.

It seemed like this was happening again.

In reality, the message Gu Zhe received wasn’t from Song Yihan.

She wouldn’t contact him first when they were in the middle of a fight.

Every time they argued, whether it was Gu Zhe’s fault or not, he was always the one to apologize first—through gifts, written reflections, or spamming her with dozens, even hundreds of messages, just to earn her forgiveness.

What? You think Song Yihan would reflect on her own behavior and apologize to Gu Zhe after they made up?

What a joke.

If she agreed to reconcile, Gu Zhe should be thankful. Once he coaxed her, that was the end of it.

Gu Zhe looked at his phone and frowned slightly.

Lin Nuo’er’s mood fell.

“Was it Song Yihan? Go ahead, take care of it. Thanks for today. I’ll head back now.”

She turned around, ready to leave.

But Gu Zhe put away his phone, grabbed her hand, and pulled her toward a bench near the dormitory building.

“It’s not Song Yihan. It’s something else.”

“Wait here for me!”

“I won’t take long!”

After saying that, he dashed off in a flash.

“Hey! Little Zhe!”

Watching his retreating back, Lin Nuo’er felt a wave of old painful memories rush over her.

A sour ache crept into the corners of her eyes.

Feeling wronged didn’t always come from being mistreated.

People have a certain capacity for emotional pressure. Most of the time, it’s not the hardship but the crushing disappointment that overwhelms you.

Like a spring—no matter how resilient it is, if you stretch it too far, it loses its shape.

Seriously.

He says it wasn’t Song Yihan.

Who else could make him leave in such a hurry?

Looking at the gauze wrapped around her leg, Lin Nuo’er suddenly felt so foolish.

Gu Zhe, do you really think us ending up at the same university was just a coincidence?

Do you think a girl would just randomly change the image she’s maintained for years?

Don’t you wonder why I always have something to talk about with you? Why I happen to know your favorite teams, your favorite players?

Gu Zhe, is it you who’s dense, or me who’s foolish?

She looked down at the medicine in her hand and gave a bitter, self-deprecating smile.

“And you actually thought what he said earlier was real.”

“You didn’t seriously think the person he wants to take care of is you, did you?”

Sometimes, she really did envy that delicate little girl.

Just as her thoughts spiraled endlessly, a delicious aroma suddenly snapped her out of it.

Wait… was that sweet and sour ribs?

She instinctively looked up and saw Gu Zhe standing in front of her with a big grin, a fine layer of sweat on his forehead.

“See? I told you I wouldn’t take long, right?”

He proudly held up a takeaway meal box in front of her.

Through the clear plastic container, Lin Nuo’er could see it was packed full—six or seven dishes in total, filling three boxes.

And her favorite, sweet and sour ribs, had its own dedicated box.

“This is… for me?”

Her voice came out hoarse and even a little shaky.

Gu Zhe took her hand and firmly placed the heavy meal into it.

“Who else would it be for? You’re the one who loves sweet and sour ribs the most.”

So just now, when he told her to wait, he had gone to buy her dinner.

He had considered that her leg was injured, and she had already returned to the dorm.

He even remembered her favorite dish.

He had carried her twice on his back earlier, and now he had rushed both ways just so she wouldn’t wait too long.

It wasn’t just Song Yihan who could make Gu Zhe run.

She, Lin Nuo’er, could too.

A surge of emotions filled Lin Nuo’er’s chest, choking her up. She couldn’t say a word, just stared blankly at Gu Zhe’s face.

Gu Zhe scratched his head, “Uh, I know, it’s kind of a lot. If you can’t finish, maybe share with your roommates.”

But Lin Nuo’er looked him in the eye and said seriously, “They don’t deserve it.”
