Chapter 2: A Wandering Ghost Who Never Belonged to This Family

Just as he finished speaking, Qin Guojing swung another heavy slap at him.

But how could Qin Yi be willing to be hit just like that?

He tried to dodge again and raised his arm to block it.

However, his body was far too frail, and after a whole day without food—combined with the weakness brought on by long-term malnutrition—he felt dizzy, his limbs limp and powerless, making it impossible to avoid the blow in time.

Even though his arm managed to catch the slap, the force was far beyond what he could withstand, and his body was knocked to the ground.

The world around him began to spin violently. A loud buzzing filled his ears, and everything in front of him seemed to lose its color.

“You worthless thing!”

Qin Guojing roared, eyes bulging with fury, “If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I would’ve never brought you back in the first place!”

“I was wrong…”

A weak voice came from Qin Yi’s mouth.

“Ai, Xiao Yi, you should have admitted your mistake earlier.”

Tears shimmered in Ding Pingli’s eyes as she walked toward him, a look of heartache covering her face as she glanced at the swelling on his arm.

“But it’s not too late to admit it now. As long as you know you’re wrong, you’re still Mommy’s good child.”

“Alright, alright, let’s just leave it at that. It’s already so late, and no one has eaten yet.”

“Xiaofeng is fine too. Huizhu, stop scowling. What Xiao Yi said earlier was just some angry words. We’re all family.”

“And you, Lao Qin—really now—kids are just stubborn sometimes. Why hit him so hard?”

She gave Qin Guojing a reproachful look, then pretended she was about to help Qin Yi up, only for her arm to be pushed away by his thin one.

Qin Yi, slowly recovering from the dizziness, glanced coldly at Ding Pingli, then turned his eyes to Qin Guojing, whose fury hadn’t fully faded.

“I meant… you were wrong… You never should’ve given birth to me in the first place!”

The moment those words left his lips, the fire that had just begun to die down in Qin Guojing’s chest flared up again.

He raised his right hand, ready to hit Qin Yi again.

“Hit me! Go ahead, hit me hard!”

Qin Yi stared him down, teeth clenched. “If you don’t kill me today, I swear I’ll pay you back a hundredfold—no, a thousandfold—for everything you’ve done to me!”

“You…”

Qin Guojing was stunned by his reaction.

He couldn’t believe it. The timid, spineless boy who always bowed and scraped, who would cry and apologize no matter how badly he was scolded or beaten—was now standing there like this? Fierce. Defiant. Like a completely different person.

Even Ding Pingli looked at him in shock.

Second sister Qin Huizhu’s brows twisted into a deep frown, forming a crease like the character “川”.

She suddenly found her younger brother unfamiliar, almost frightening.

“You little bastard! You think I won’t do it?!”

Qin Guojing came to his senses and raised his hand again, but just before the slap landed, a pair of arms grabbed him.

“Dad, stop it!”

The familiar voice made Qin Guojing pause. He turned around and saw that his youngest son, Qin Xiaofeng, had quietly entered the room.

Xiaofeng looked pale. He had only just been discharged from the hospital after a serious allergic reaction, and the weakness in his body showed clearly in the way he held his father back.

“Xiaofeng, what are you doing here? You just got out of the hospital. You should be resting.”

Qin Guojing’s voice instantly softened, as if the raging man just seconds ago had never existed.

“Dad, don’t blame Brother Qin Yi. It was my fault. I was the one who asked him for that piece of cake. He probably didn’t know it had mango in it.”

“If he’d known I was allergic, he would’ve never let me eat it. I know my brother—he just has a stubborn mouth, but he’s actually very gentle.”

“Brother Qin Yi didn’t do anything wrong. Watching you hit him like that… it really hurts me inside…”

As he spoke, Qin Xiaofeng held his chest, his eyes glistening with tears.

With his soft, delicate features and slightly feminine appearance, he looked pitiful and frail. Ding Pingli and Qin Huizhu both felt their hearts ache for him.

But Qin Yi only felt disgust, to the point of nausea.

He knew all too well—this was all just an act.

The real Qin Xiaofeng was malicious and cunning, willing to do anything to get what he wanted.

Take the so-called “serious allergy incident” as an example. Qin Yi had never given him a mango cake. He hadn’t even touched one!

In this house, he often didn’t get enough warm meals. How could he possibly have cake?

It was all a setup. A trap orchestrated by Qin Xiaofeng to frame him.

The sad part was, no one in this house ever questioned anything. No one cared to see the holes in the story. No one would believe any explanation Qin Yi gave.

As long as Qin Xiaofeng said it, no matter how false, it instantly became absolute truth in the ears of the Qin family.

Qin Xiaofeng had not the slightest trace of remorse or affection. If anything, he probably wished Qin Yi would drop dead right there in that room.

“Ai, since Xiaofeng already said so, just let it go, Lao Qin.”

Ding Pingli gently supported the frail Qin Xiaofeng and helped him out of the room while fussing, “Xiaofeng, you’ve just been discharged. You must follow the doctor’s advice. Lie down and rest, don’t wander around, alright?”

Qin Guojing also reminded softly, “Slowly now, be careful.”

Their tone and expressions were completely different from how they treated Qin Yi—like night and day.

Qin Yi silently watched the scene unfold.

How many times had he seen this exact picture? He had lost count. His heart had gone numb long ago.

He no longer expected anything from this family.

He only wanted to leave and sever ties with them completely.

And when he had enough strength—he would return every bit of pain he had endured, a thousandfold.

“Qin Yi!”

After sending Qin Xiaofeng back to his room, Qin Guojing turned his gaze back to him.

“I won’t argue with you anymore today! Reflect on your behavior! If you don’t change, don’t blame me for kicking you out of this house!”

“No need.”

Qin Yi took a deep breath. “I’ll leave right now.”

With that, he ignored the rage twisting Qin Guojing’s face and walked straight toward the door.

“Where do you think you’re going to fool around?!”

“What does where I go have to do with you?”

Qin Yi didn’t stop walking. Without looking back, he said, “Isn’t this what you’ve always wanted? Today, I’ll grant your wish. From now on, I sever all ties with the Qin family!”

“You bastard! Sever ties, huh?! Fine! Then get the hell out and don’t ever let me see your face again! Even if you kneel and beg, don’t ever think about coming back!”

Furious, Qin Guojing’s forehead veins bulged. He grabbed the family photo from the nightstand and hurled it at Qin Yi.

The photo frame flew past his ear and smashed into the wall. The already flimsy wooden frame bent on impact, and when it hit the floor, the glass shattered into pieces.

One sharp shard cut into Qin Yi’s ankle, but he didn’t even flinch.

He just kept walking, stepping over the shattered photo as if it meant nothing.

In the photo, the parents and five sisters surrounded Qin Xiaofeng, all smiling happily.

Qin Yi stood awkwardly at the edge, as if afraid to disturb this happy family—a lonely ghost who never truly belonged in the picture.
