Chapter 5: Be a Beast or Worse Than a Beast?

“When they arrive later, we’ll have to properly ‘help out.’ That pretty boy Lin Feng, with what little ability he has, there’s no way he can handle a woman that beautiful.”

Wang Erhu let out a vulgar snicker and glanced at the trembling beauty behind him, who had just been played with moments ago.

“Two women together would be even more fun.”

As he imagined it, Wang Erhu’s body began to heat up again. But after finishing a whole pot of wine, no one had shown up outside.

“Where the hell did that brat Song Chun go?”

Annoyance flickered in Wang Erhu’s eyes as he shouted, “Someone, go check on Song Chun! Why is he taking so long to get things done?”

The fierce aura of a Decurion surged from Wang Erhu, making the guards outside respond quickly.

After a while, a guard returned to report, “Sir, Song Chun is not at home. His wife also doesn’t know where he went.”

“Not at home?”

Wang Erhu’s brow furrowed, and his anger deepened. He waved his hand impatiently and said, “Then go check Lin Feng’s place. Since when did that brat Song Chun become so unreliable?”

The guard hesitated upon hearing this, clearly reluctant.

Lin Feng?

That fool who married the woman with heterochromia?

“Why are you still standing there like an idiot? Go!” Wang Erhu barked.

Left with no choice, the guard lowered his head and headed out first…

Outside the thatched hut, the bloodstains in the courtyard had just been covered up.

The moment Lin Feng walked into the house, sounds came from the courtyard.

“Lin Feng, are you there?” the guard called out loudly, not caring whether Lin Feng was home or not as he barged right in.

“Dear husband…” Seeing someone enter, He Caiwei’s face went pale instantly.

Lin Feng smiled calmly and patted her head to reassure her, “I’ll take care of everything. Your husband is far more capable than you think.”

Turning around, he stepped outside first.

For some reason, seeing Lin Feng’s thin but firm back, He Caiwei suddenly felt her anxious heart settle.

Inside the thatched hut, the main bedroom had a partition.

A thin curtain draped beside the bed, and a folding screen divided the room in two.

Inside the partition was a neat bed with a thin mat used for daily rest. Outside were a few wooden tables and stools, messily stacked together, used for occasional visits from fellow soldiers.

“Did you see Song Chun tonight? The Decurion asked me to come ask,” the guard said bluntly, immediately selling out Wang Erhu without hesitation.

Lin Feng scratched his head and kept up his harmless persona, saying, “Nope, Brother Song and I usually don’t talk much. Why would he come to my house?”

However, the guard wasn’t like Wang Erhu—he wasn’t obsessed with women.

He didn’t make any crude remarks about He Caiwei. He simply scanned Lin Feng with a neutral gaze, then glanced toward the partition where He Caiwei’s silhouette was faintly visible.

A breeze lifted a corner of the thin white curtain, revealing a glimpse of the black and deep blue heterochromatic eye.

The guard instinctively took a step back, a surge of aversion rising in his chest.

“Alright, just routine questioning,” he muttered and quickly left Lin Feng’s house, thinking it’d be a disaster to get involved with such an ominous person.

As for Lin Feng, he didn’t even cross the guard’s mind as a suspect.

He was just a lowly Grade C soldier, possibly not even a martial artist.

Song Chun might not have been a decent man, but his strength was well-known. Delivering his wife to Decurion Wang Erhu wasn’t a favor given for nothing…

In the Wang household’s main hall, after listening to the report, Wang Erhu narrowed his eyes and rolled two iron balls in his hand, clinking them together with a crisp sound.

“Where the hell did that brat Song Chun run off to? Fine, he ran away—but why take two others with him?”

“Could it be they saw the battle approaching and decided to desert?”

Wang Erhu had similar thoughts as the guard. He believed Lin Feng was nothing more than an empty shell—nice-looking on the outside, but useless. If the military hadn’t been short on men, someone like him wouldn’t even be qualified to get a soldier’s wage.

“Keep investigating!” Wang Erhu’s voice turned cold. He slammed the two iron balls down onto the wooden table in front of him. The balls sank in, leaving two perfectly round impressions.

That morning, the captain at the training ground had mentioned that war was imminent. At such a critical moment, having three soldiers desert from his unit wasn’t a small issue.

Wang Erhu had been eyeing the position of Centurion, and his chances had been decent. But now, with this situation cropping up, it gave him a major headache.

Compared to promotion, wealth, and power, Wang Erhu had already tossed thoughts of He Caiwei to the back of his mind.

With power and status, would he ever lack women?

…

“There shouldn’t be any evidence left behind.”

After sending off Wang Erhu’s man, Lin Feng stood at the entrance to his courtyard.

It was normal to feel nervous after killing and burying someone for the first time. But to his surprise, he realized he had concealed everything extremely well.

There was no unease, no churning stomach, none of the typical aftereffects of murder.

“Could it be… that I, Lin Feng, was born to be a killer?”

He laughed at himself and returned to the inner room.

Inside the partition, He Caiwei had likely been exhausted. Her head rested against the firm pillow, already fast asleep.

Lin Feng could understand. Looking at her peaceful face in slumber, her long lashes quivering lightly, her skin soft and milky, glowing faintly with a creamy white luster—she looked just like a sleeping baby.

Her curled figure resembled a seductive green snake, and her white robe clung perfectly to her voluptuous curves, making her look even more alluring.

Lin Feng’s mouth felt dry just watching her. He swallowed hard, but quickly suppressed the strange impulse in his heart.

Even though he had brought He Caiwei home and they were now officially husband and wife, Lin Feng wasn’t the type to take advantage of someone when they were vulnerable.

At the very least, he would wait until she woke up and gave her consent. That would be the right time for wine and a night of passion.

Without disturbing He Caiwei, Lin Feng quietly exited the partition and closed the door behind him.

Sighing, he took out the spare bedding from the cabinet and spread it on the cold, hard floor.

“With a wife at home, and still sleeping alone like this… I really am pitiful,” he muttered.

After a long day, Lin Feng was exhausted. As soon as he lay down, a wave of warmth washed over him, and he quickly drifted into sleep…

At dawn the next morning, the sky began to brighten.

After a full night’s rest, He Caiwei looked visibly refreshed and energetic. The fatigue that had dulled her beautiful features was gone, and her cheeks glowed with a healthy flush.

She opened the door of the inner room, ready to start with household chores, only to see Lin Feng sleeping on the floor.

“Dear husband, you really are silly. We could’ve slept on the bed together,” she whispered with a soft, affectionate smile.

Looking at the still-sleeping Lin Feng, a warm feeling surged through her heart.
