Chapter 7: Dear Wife Likes It? Then I’ll Buy It!

The figure sneaking in was the same guard who had visited Lin Feng’s home the previous night. After confirming that no one was around, he leapt over the wall and entered the courtyard, beginning to search for something.

“Decurion is being overly suspicious. How could Lin Feng possibly have killed three Grade A soldiers?”

“They were all 2nd-grade martial artists. How could a newly trained recruit like him ever stand a chance?”

After searching for the time it took to brew a cup of tea and finding nothing, the guard left in frustration…

“Sir, I searched every corner of Lin Feng’s house. There’s really nothing, just the bed was a bit messy.”

“This brat’s luck is insane. Scoring such a top-quality woman before heading to the battlefield.”

“Enough, get out!” Wang Erhu snapped.

From last night to now, he had already sent people to search every possible place. With no options left, he had even sent someone to Lin Feng’s house again.

But still, nothing.

“I must’ve been out of my mind. Grasping at straws… who the hell is Lin Feng anyway?” Wang Erhu grumbled irritably. Time was running out…

Yan Pass was just a small town. Aside from a few commoners, most of its residents were stationed soldiers. For daily household purchases, people had to travel to Fengshui County, ten li away.

It was said that if Yan Pass ever fell, Fengshui County would be the first to suffer. Trouble was sure to reach them.

The cart stopped at the street corner. He Caiwei followed Lin Feng through the bustling streets.

She had put her veil hat back on.

Even if Lin Feng didn’t care, her heterochromia would attract unnecessary attention, making their shopping much more difficult.

“Dear husband, I don’t mind a little hardship. Just having you is more than enough.” He Caiwei smiled sweetly and gently took Lin Feng’s hand, comforting him instead.

Lin Feng didn’t say much, just smiled lightly.

When it came to household errands, even with the system, Lin Feng wasn’t exactly skilled.

Oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, coarse salt for brushing teeth, willow floss for bathing—how many men cared about these things?

Today, Fengshui County was especially lively. Street vendors on both sides called out loudly, and goods were noticeably cheaper than usual.

Likely due to the impending war, everyone was trying to make what they could.

As they strolled along, He Caiwei suddenly stopped at a stall selling traditional scholar’s tools.

Lin Feng followed her gaze.

Wolf-hair brushes, xuan paper with a chipped corner, inkstones, and bottled ink all lay on display.

“If you want it, buy it. We can afford this much.” Lin Feng saw that she truly liked it and couldn’t help thinking about everything He Caiwei had done these past days.

The grace she displayed when being chosen, the delicate meals she’d cooked yesterday—things no ordinary woman could do—and her gentle words, her subtle care during their time together…

Could she have been the daughter of some wealthy noble household?

Dragged into misfortune, now left adrift?

Lin Feng couldn’t give her much for now, but what he could, he would never hold back.

“It’s fine, let’s not buy it.” He Caiwei stared a moment longer, then shook her head firmly and tugged Lin Feng away from the stall.

She mumbled along the way, “There are so many things the house still needs. This stationery set is too expensive. That wolf-hair brush is 30% above market price, and the xuan paper is chipped but still being sold at full price. None of these merchants are honest.”

“You shouldn’t spoil me too much either. The money for these could’ve bought half a month’s food. If we had meat every meal, it’d still last several days.”

“You’re still in army training, you need proper nutrition…”

The more she spoke, the more she began scolding Lin Feng, her eyes sparkling with the sharpness of a diligent housekeeper.

“Alright.” Lin Feng looked at his serious wife and didn’t argue.

The two continued shopping. After another hour, they had finally gathered everything the house needed.

“Dear wife, wait here a moment. I’ll be right back!” Lin Feng didn’t want her to suffer even a bit.

“Dear husband!” He Caiwei called softly, but he was already gone. She could only stay put and wait.

Time passed.

She scanned the crowd, searching for Lin Feng’s figure again and again.

When she finally spotted him, her nose tingled and eyes turned misty.

In Lin Feng’s hands were the very items she had mumbled about earlier: the chipped xuan paper, a decent inkstone and ink slab, and the wolf-hair brush that was 30% overpriced.

Even though everything looked secondhand, it was already remarkable to find scholarly tools in a common goods market like this.

“Dear husband, what are you doing?”

Lin Feng walked up to her.

He Caiwei pouted, lips puffed, her eyes red and rimmed with tears. “I told you not to buy it. We still need money for more important things. These are useless.”

“But didn’t you really like them?”

Lin Feng bent down and looked into her tear-filled eyes, smiling, “Don’t worry, dear wife. I’ve been in the army for over half a year. I’ve saved up some silver.”

“This isn’t money from the household budget—it’s my personal stash.”

“Now that I’ve bought this set for you, there’s nothing left. So, how about my dear wife helps me out a little?”

He chuckled and extended his hand toward her.

“No.” He Caiwei slapped his palm, hands on her hips. “Who told you to buy it? I’m not giving you anything.”

She spoke with a bright smile, dimples faintly showing. Her head turned away slightly, and the joy on her face was like a blooming flower—utterly captivating.

“Really nothing?” Lin Feng leaned in with anticipation.

“Nothing, nothing! Absolutely nothing!” He Caiwei scolded, her lovely face all puffed up.

Then…

“Dear husband, stop!”

“It tickles… that really tickles~”

“Dear husband, I was wrong! I admit I was wrong!”

After some playful teasing, the two were ready to head home.

Just then, a burst of shouting erupted on the street ahead. “Watch where you’re going! Do you even know who my young master is? Get lost!”

A dandified young master strutted over, wearing a fur hat and a powdered face, his complexion pale. He was surrounded by three to five followers, walking arrogantly down the street.

Seeing him, Lin Feng frowned slightly. He didn’t want trouble.

He Caiwei lowered her head and leaned into Lin Feng.

As the pampered young master passed by, a breeze blew past and lifted the edge of He Caiwei’s veil hat.

The hat fluttered in the air for a few seconds before slowly drifting to the ground.

Following the movement, the young master turned to look—and the moment he saw He Caiwei’s face, his eyes glazed over.

It was as if a fairy had walked straight out of a painting.
