Chapter 5: Pretty Sister, No Need to Be So Polite~

Early the next morning, as a rooster crowed sharply, Ji Hanyue slowly woke up.

“Hiss… my head still hurts a little, but at least I can move now.”

She reached up to touch her still-dizzy, feverish forehead but instead felt a slightly cool towel resting on it, and froze for a moment.

Then she looked over at Xu Fan, who was sleeping soundly beside the kang. Her beautiful face flushed slightly with embarrassment. “Yesterday… was this little brat taking care of me?”

Suddenly, as if remembering something, she couldn’t help leaning closer to study his face.

In the dim light shining through the window, Ji Hanyue clearly saw a barely visible bit of drool glistening at the corner of Xu Fan’s mouth, and her lips curved into a delighted little smirk.

Seriously? You’re the one drooling in your sleep, not me!

For some reason, Ji Hanyue felt oddly pleased.

But just as she was about to shift her gaze away from his face, Xu Fan suddenly trembled and, as if sensing something, opened his eyes.

And so, the first thing he saw was Ji Hanyue staring at him with a sneaky smile.

Xu Fan: ???

His eyes widened in confusion.

Crap… did I pick up a fool?

Seeing the odd look in Xu Fan’s eyes, Ji Hanyue’s expression darkened. She immediately understood that this little brat had clearly misunderstood something. She couldn’t help cursing in her heart, Why did you have to wake up now of all times?

Still, the years of imperial etiquette training kicked in, and she quickly regained control of her expression. With a weak tone, she said to Xu Fan, “This young lady… is called Hanyue. Thank you for saving me yesterday, young sir.”

She was cautious when out in the world and wouldn’t easily reveal her real name.

Xu Fan let out a sigh of relief, smiled warmly, and revealed a set of clean, white teeth. “My name’s Xu Fan. And pretty sister, you really don’t have to be so polite.”

“It’s good you’re awake. I’ll go get you something to eat.”

Pretty sister?

Ji Hanyue blinked, slightly stunned by the term. Watching Xu Fan’s small figure walk away, her expression became a bit complicated.

This little brat sure spoke bluntly, but for some reason, she didn’t find it annoying.

Struggling to sit up, Ji Hanyue looked at the snowflakes drifting outside the window, her expression turning a bit sorrowful.

Her thoughts drifted to that bloody snowy night not long ago and her current situation—alone and lost, with no idea what her next step should be.

For the first time, she felt a deep sense of loneliness and helplessness, curling up like a small, defensive hedgehog.

Father… if you were still here, what would you want your daughter to do?

But now, your daughter has nothing left…

Just then, the faint sound of arguing drifted in from outside. Listening closely, it seemed like parents scolding a child.

She returned to her senses, startled, and peeked cautiously out the window.

Through it, she saw an elderly woman in a patchwork cotton coat standing before the worn-out main house, speaking to Xu Fan with a displeased expression.

But Xu Fan only lowered his head silently, holding a few coarse, brown mantou in his arms without a word.

Though Ji Hanyue was a princess, she wasn’t some sheltered fool who knew nothing of the world. Seeing this, she immediately understood.

This family was worried about wasting extra food on her.

Soon, Xu Fan came back with four rough mantou.

Looking at his casual expression, Ji Hanyue felt a pang in her heart and motioned for him to come over.

Xu Fan blinked and obediently leaned closer.

Ji Hanyue carefully chose her words and looked at him sincerely. “Xu Fan, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. But it’s the dead of winter, and you don’t have much food. If I stay, I’ll only bring trouble to your family, so I plan to—”

Xu Fan blinked and asked, “Eat mantou?”

“Mm… huh?”

Ji Hanyue instinctively nodded, but then realized what he had just said. Her expression turned startled, and she quickly waved her hand. “No… I meant I plan to leave today. I don’t want to trouble you anymore.”

It was her first time being under someone’s roof, and her words came out a little awkward. “But don’t worry. I’ll definitely repay your family for saving my life one day.”

Xu Fan just smiled, split two of the mantou, and handed them to her. He looked seriously at her pale yet stunningly beautiful profile. “You’re still sick.”

Ji Hanyue felt a soft tremble in her heart.

She turned her face away, not daring to meet his gaze. Her voice was low and shaky. “It… it’s fine. I’m a cultivator. I’ll recover soon.”

But she was lying.

While she was technically a cultivator, she had never taken cultivation seriously. She had only just stepped through the door of the Immortal Path, and her body wasn’t much different from an ordinary person’s.

Add to that the fact she had fled in a rush with nothing, and with the world outside frozen over, relying on herself alone, she’d probably die in some desolate corner long before recovering.

Seeing her body tremble slightly, Xu Fan—armed with six lifetimes of pursuit experience—immediately saw through the confusion and unease hidden in her heart. He couldn’t help but chuckle wryly.

So stubborn. Willing to suffer just to save face.

Thinking for a moment, Xu Fan shoved another warm mantou into her arms and said warmly, “Sister Hanyue, since you’re a cultivator, you should eat more to keep your strength up.”

“As for leaving… you can wait until this winter is over.”

Ji Hanyue was surprised to feel that extra warmth in her arms.

She looked at Xu Fan, only to see him sitting at the doorstep with his last mantou, happily munching away while watching the snow fall outside.

Watching Xu Fan eat so heartily, Ji Hanyue’s stomach let out a soft protest.

She pressed her lips together but didn’t refuse again. Instead, she gently bit into the mantou that still carried Xu Fan’s warmth.

It didn’t taste good. The texture was dry and rough, and the flavor was rather unpalatable.

Yet Ji Hanyue didn’t feel that way at all.

She ate it without a trace of complaint, sitting on the bed, her gaze fixed steadily on Xu Fan as he sat at the door, her thoughts unreadable.

Xu Fan caught the scene in his peripheral vision and let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Fortunately, Ji Hanyue wasn’t like Nangong Liuli, who would charge into a wall without turning back. At least she was willing to listen.

Thinking of certain things from past lives, Xu Fan sighed lightly.

He still didn’t understand what the system was thinking—this time he had actually started out as an ordinary mortal boy, something that had never happened in his previous six lives.

A mortal boy, poor family, and even terrible cultivation aptitude—so bad it was ridiculous. It left Xu Fan, who had always taken the initiative to pursuit his exes in past lives, feeling more than a little frustrated.

“But at least there’s no time limit this time, so everything can move slowly…”

Xu Fan chuckled softly. After finishing his mantou, he clapped his hands and stepped out to continue his farm chores.

However…

What Xu Fan didn’t know was that inside the room, a pair of clear, cold, watery eyes were quietly fixed on his back.

That gaze never once strayed from him.

It was filled with curiosity, inquiry, and something else—an inexplicable, indescribable emotion that left one’s heart rippling for a long time.
