Chapter 25: Lost the Man and the Battle!

Meanwhile, in the staff housing community…

Zhang Xiaofeng was already fast asleep, and sleeping soundly. He was having a dream—one where a beautiful woman from the company had fallen for him at first sight. Coincidentally, she was exactly his type—fair-skinned, long legs, elegant and genuine, gentle and kind. After getting to know each other a little, they had dinner and watched a movie together. At the end, he gave her a rose, and they started dating. Their relationship was sweet and loving—like living in heaven.

Suddenly, Su Yuebai appeared in the dream. She showed up in front of him and his girlfriend, looked at the girl, then at him, then suddenly squatted down holding her head and cried her heart out in agony.

He almost kicked her on the spot but chose to ignore her and left with his girlfriend in a car.

The dream felt long, and Zhang Xiaofeng thoroughly enjoyed it. After all, with his high salary of 20,000 yuan per month—higher than most people in the country—finding a girlfriend would be a breeze.

The next morning, Zhang Xiaofeng woke up refreshed, humming a tune. He took a comfortable shower and headed to work. When he arrived, he deliberately entered through the back door—to avoid running into Su Yuebai.

…

That morning, Su Yuebai didn’t go looking for Zhang Xiaofeng either. A very unpleasant thing happened at home—her cousins, the son and daughter of her parents’ siblings, had come over. Su Qianghai and Wang Dajuan were beaming with joy and warmly welcomed them in. But for Su Yuebai, it was pure torment.

The reason was simple: her cousins, especially the male one, often came around. Back then, she hadn’t thought much of it. But now, she realized—he wanted to take over everything!

She recalled the last time she went to visit his home. Just as she arrived at the door, she overheard him bragging inside, “Dad, Xiaoyue is just a woman. Once she gets married, their family will have no one left. Won’t all their assets become mine?”

Then she heard his father reply, “Exactly, son. Once she’s married, I’ll go to their place and persuade Qianghai to transfer the house, car, company, and everything under your name. That way, outsiders won’t take advantage and benefit for nothing.”

Back then, Su Yuebai almost exploded from anger. She wanted to shout at them, “Aren’t you the outsiders trying to seize what’s not yours? How is this different from robbery? How is this different from saying directly, ‘I want to leave you with nothing’?”

But she didn’t want to argue with such people and silently walked away.

Now, seeing them visit again, her heart ached. Their constant visits were just to butter up her parents, win favor, and eventually have the assets passed down to them.

Su Yuebai felt a deep sense of crisis.

Her parents held deeply ingrained traditional views. They already didn’t want to give the fruits of their life’s hard work to someone with a different surname like Zhang Xiaofeng. But the issue now was—if everything got handed over to the cousin, even she might get driven out!

She could already picture it. If this villa and all the family’s assets were transferred to her cousin, he’d definitely use her marriage as a reason to kick her out, saying married daughters shouldn’t stay. Once the property was his, he’d surely ask why she was still hanging around.

Worse, what if he turned hostile after getting everything and kicked out her parents too? Where would they go?

If her parents were already gone, they wouldn’t see the family torn apart. But if they were still alive, being driven out and left to sleep on the streets—it would be unbearable.

The more she thought about it, the more distressed she became. Her heart twisted painfully, and her mood hit rock bottom, like a black cloud hanging over her head.

…

Su Qianghai and Wang Dajuan smiled as they led their niece and nephew to the dining table and instructed the maid to serve food. Then, Su Qianghai asked, “Nephew, how’s your dad doing lately?”

“He’s doing great. Uncle, how have you been feeling lately?” The cousin, Su Mingxin, sipped his tea and smiled. He had brought many gifts, clearly skilled at winning favor with elders.

“I’m fine,” said Su Qianghai, his mood lifted by the visit. He smiled happily.

They chatted casually while eating. After a while, Su Mingxin glanced around and asked curiously, “By the way, Uncle, where’s that guy from the Northwest?”

“Who says he’s from the Northwest? Can you show some respect? Do you have no manners?” Su Yuebai snapped angrily.

Su Mingxin already disliked her and rolled his eyes. “I’m talking to Uncle. Why are you butting in?”

Su Qianghai quickly intervened, trying to smooth things over. “Enough, both of you. Let’s not argue. We’re happy you’re here today. We’re family. That guy from the Northwest had a falling out with Xiaoyue. They broke off the engagement and he left.”

What!

The moment he heard that, Su Mingxin was overjoyed!

He had always hated that Su Yuebai brought home a live-in son-in-law. How was he supposed to get the inheritance then? Ever since Zhang Xiaofeng showed up, he’d been frustrated. But now, things had taken a turn. Finally, his luck had arrived!

Still, he feigned concern. “Uncle, why? Weren’t he and Xiaoyue doing fine?”

“Don’t bring it up!” Su Qianghai sighed heavily, clearly frustrated.

Even though he didn’t explain further, Su Mingxin could already tell from their expressions that they were glad Zhang Xiaofeng was gone. When he looked at Wang Dajuan, she also wore a resentful expression. Everything was clear.

He said, “Uncle, it’s good he’s gone! He’s not even part of the family. Why should he live off us? Our family didn’t build its wealth for his sake!”

Wang Dajuan added, “Nephew, you’re right. We should’ve kicked him out long ago. Who does he think he is, daring to lose his temper with us and even flipping the table? How arrogant!”

“What? He flipped the table?” Su Mingxin feigned shock but was thrilled inside. He slapped the table and said indignantly, “What a joke! Flipping the table? That’s outrageous!”

Su Qianghai sighed again. “Don’t mention him anymore. I’m sick of that guy!”

“Exactly. I can’t stand him either. He should’ve been kicked out ages ago. Ever since I first saw him, I didn’t like him. A man living off a woman—shameless!”

Su Yuebai exploded with rage. “Shut your mouth! Aren’t you just trying to get my dad to give you the inheritance? You think I can’t see through that? Shut up already!”

Su Mingxin looked at her in surprise. After a pause, he said, “Shouldn’t it be given to me? You’re just an outsider. Hurry up and find someone to marry. Don’t worry about things that don’t concern you.”

“What! You…” Su Yuebai was furious to the point of pain. She couldn’t believe he said it so shamelessly in front of everyone!

But it made sense. She had no husband now, was in a weak position, and he no longer felt the need to be cautious.

Her heart ached sharply. She suddenly remembered how Zhang Xiaofeng had once slapped this cousin for bullying her. The cousin had picked up a stick to fight back, but being shorter, he got beaten badly and had to flee in embarrassment.

That had happened on the second day Zhang Xiaofeng came to their house. She still cared about him then and even called her cousin, asking him not to report it to the police. Even if he did, she said she’d claim it was a family dispute that could be resolved internally. Her cousin had no choice but to accept it.

“You what? You’re just a woman. Go find a man and get married already. Since the thing in your belly isn’t formed yet, go get rid of it while there’s still time,” Su Mingxin said without hesitation. He lit a cigarette and puffed casually, completely at ease.

“Pu!” Su Yuebai almost spat blood. That was her deepest pain!

She roared, “Do you think it doesn’t hurt to get rid of the baby? Just because it’s not your body?!”

Su Mingxin took another sip of tea and said lightly, “So what if you bleed a little? It’s not a big deal.”

Su Yuebai grabbed a vase and smashed it toward his head with a loud crash. Su Mingxin reacted quickly and dodged. The vase hit the floor and shattered.

Su Qianghai hurried to mediate, “Xiaoyue, what are you doing?! Why are you throwing things at people?!”

Su Yuebai turned to look at her father. Tears welled up in her eyes. So this was where he stood? He blamed her but not her cousin? He sided with the man?

Wasn’t her body also a human body? Did he have any idea how cruel it was for a woman to undergo an abortion? The price was too bloody.

Her face turned pale. Through clenched teeth, she said sorrowfully, “Dad, didn’t you hear him just now? He said he wants to take everything from us!”

“Take what? He was just joking. He comes to see us, brings gifts. Why would he do such a thing? Even if he did, shouldn’t we give him something? He’s been so filial. What’s wrong with that? Stop talking nonsense,” Su Qianghai said with a stern face.

Su Yuebai turned even paler. She bit her lip hard, unable to say another word.

She felt like she had truly lost both her man and the battle!

At that moment, Wang Dajuan stepped in, “That’s enough. Nephew’s here today. We’re family—we should be happy. Let’s eat, let’s eat.”

Su Yuebai realized she couldn’t stay in this house anymore. Her parents were so biased toward men, even toward a nephew who wasn’t their son.

She had no appetite at all. Clenching her teeth, she stood up and said, “You eat. I’m leaving.”

“Where are you going?” Su Qianghai frowned.

Su Yuebai gave him a cold look. She didn’t want to say a single word to her father and turned to leave.

…

Shortly after, outside the Bomei Building, Su Yuebai stood at the entrance, looking up at the 42-story tower.
