Chapter 26: If He Were Still Here… How Wonderful That Would Be…

Su Yuebai felt terribly upset. She longed for a shoulder to lean on. In the past, whenever she was sad or wronged, Zhang Xiaofeng’s broad shoulders had always been there to support her. But now…

Tears silently rolled down her cheeks.

After a long while, she gathered her courage and walked inside. She quickly entered Bomei Building and took the elevator to the floor where Zhang Xiaofeng worked. As soon as the elevator doors opened and she stepped out, she was stopped by a security guard.

“Ma’am, please stop. No unauthorized personnel beyond this point,” said the same guard who had been stationed there for years and was familiar with every employee’s face. He didn’t recognize Su Yuebai.

“I’m here to see someone, could you please make an exception?” she asked politely.

“Sorry, no outsiders allowed inside,” the security guard replied firmly, waving his hand.

Su Yuebai didn’t give up. She tried to persuade him, reasoning with both logic and emotion. But no matter how she tried, the guard didn’t budge. After all, it was his duty to prevent unknown individuals from entering the company. There was no way he’d allow a stranger in so easily. After half an hour of trying, Su Yuebai had no choice but to leave, feeling even more heartbroken.

Back downstairs, she stood near the building’s exit, waiting for Zhang Xiaofeng. She stood there firmly, eyes fixed, refusing to give up.

About an hour later, she suddenly saw a few uniformed employees walking out, chatting as they went. One of them said, “That guy Zhang Xiaofeng is incredible! He casually fixed a bug we’d been struggling with for ages. Amazing!”

Another chimed in, “Exactly! We thought it was super complicated, but he glanced at it and gave a clear solution right away. The crazy part is, we didn’t even understand half of what he said! He’s on another level! And then, he solved it himself in just ten minutes and even taught us a ton of stuff. He’s a genius—unbelievable!”

“The boss hit the jackpot hiring someone like him. Just having him here brings so much to the company…”

Su Yuebai’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly stepped forward and asked, “Excuse me, the Zhang Xiaofeng you’re talking about—is he tall, neat, handsome, a Qingbei graduate?” She described his appearance.

“Yeah, you know him?” one of them asked, confused, clearly not recognizing her.

“Yes, I’m his friend. What were you discussing just now?”

Su Yuebai desperately wanted to know how Zhang Xiaofeng was doing at this new job. Since she couldn’t see him directly, hearing anything about him meant everything right now.

“Beauty, we just came down for a smoke break. If you don’t mind the smoke, I’ll tell you.” The man held up his cigarette box.

Su Yuebai nodded. “Please, go on.”

He lit a cigarette and said, “Zhang Xiaofeng is amazing—you probably don’t even know. His skills are at a master level. We struggled with a bug for a whole week and he just glanced at it and pointed out the solution. We immediately understood and resolved it quickly. He’s brilliant!”

Another man lit a cigarette too and added, “Beauty, don’t tell me you like Brother Feng? Haha, can’t blame you if you do. He just joined, but he already has the highest salary in the entire company—even higher than the general manager. Tons of girls admire him! It’s only been three days, and he’s solved countless major problems. Some of those issues even professors hired by the boss couldn’t fix. I swear, he’s like a god!”

“Exactly! And the craziest thing? He doesn’t even seem to work. He just sits there all day, eating snacks and sipping coffee, yet his salary is ridiculously high. I’m so jealous! His team hasn’t even been assembled yet, but when it is, he’ll probably be super busy. Or maybe not—the boss seems to want him overseeing the big picture.”

Everyone took turns praising him, full of admiration. But to Su Yuebai, each word felt like a dagger of guilt. Her heart ached terribly. Yes, his skills were extraordinary. He was so capable. And yet, he had left. If only he were still working at her family’s company… how great that would be…

She nearly burst into tears. She held it back, but the next moment she felt a warm sting at her nose—her tears had already started falling.

“Hey, miss, are you okay?” one of them asked, thinking perhaps the cigarette smoke had irritated her. He quickly put out his cigarette.

“I’m fine… really. You can keep smoking. Is there more?” Su Yuebai wiped her eyes and spoke with a trembling voice.

“You’re really okay?”

“I’m fine. Please continue.”

“Alright then.” The man sensed something was off, but continued anyway, “So today at work, a technician from one of our partner companies suddenly lost it and demanded a 50% increase in service fees—no negotiation, or they’d terminate the contract! The boss was furious. That company is the best in Jiang City, nearly irreplaceable. But the price hike was outrageous—practically extortion! Then guess what? Brother Feng said just one sentence, and the boss immediately canceled the contract. Want to know what he said?”

“What?”

“He casually said, ‘Whatever he can do, I can do too.’ The boss was stunned at first, then nodded with full satisfaction and told that technician, ‘You’re fired.’ The technician looked at Brother Feng in shock and left humiliated. You should know, that guy was considered a rare high-level expert in the industry—almost irreplaceable. But Brother Feng took him down just like that! When we heard about it, everyone was blown away!”

Su Yuebai’s regret deepened. He was already so capable and hardworking, and now here, he was like a shark dropped into a creek—unstoppable! He would thrive wherever he went. How could she have let someone like him go? And back when he worked at her family’s company—how had her family treated him…

“And yesterday,” another man spoke up, “one of my old games had a critical bug. Players could duplicate items in bulk and profit off it. It was dangerous! We had no solution. It was an old bug that had just been discovered. If we rushed to patch it, we might cause more problems. But Brother Feng held a meeting on the spot, explaining everything from the core logic of the bug. He talked for two and a half hours, thoroughly and clearly. We learned so much! Honestly, we all call him ‘Master.’ He’s our bread and butter now!”

Su Yuebai stared at them, pain flooding her heart. After a long silence, she said, “Please stop. I can’t take anymore.”

“Miss, are you alright?”

“I’m fine, really. I have something to do, I’ll be going now.”

She quickly walked across the street, unwilling to hear another word, afraid her tears would completely ruin her face.

If only she hadn’t said those words back then… If only he were still at her family’s company… how wonderful that would be…
