I Already Severed Ties With Them. Who Would Bother With Them Now? - Chapter 40:
Chapter 40: A Secret That Could Never Be Told!
This matter, put simply, wasn’t about infidelity. Strictly speaking, it was all a misunderstanding—but now, even if Su Yuebai jumped into the Yellow River, she couldn’t wash herself clean.
Back then, she was still in high school and had a crush on someone she considered her “white moonlight.” The two of them were never officially together, but they made a promise: once they graduated and started working, they’d be together. They both agreed to focus entirely on studying and not waste time on romance.
Or rather, they didn’t want their studies to be disrupted by love.
But after the college entrance exam, in the fall, when university started, Su Yuebai met Zhang Xiaofeng. Her feelings changed. She messaged her white moonlight and said, “Don’t contact me anymore. I have a boyfriend now.”
That man was shocked and asked her what was going on, but she directly deleted him.
Not long after, he kept sending friend requests. Eventually, she accepted. He told her he could just be her male best friend—and she agreed.
Later, when she graduated and began discussing marriage with Zhang Xiaofeng, around four or five months ago, her white moonlight got anxious. He took a flight and came to Jiang City overnight, messaging her to pick him up from the airport.
Su Yuebai went.
That day, she spent the entire day shopping with him. By nightfall, the white moonlight had nowhere to stay and asked her to go with him to a hotel. She agreed and entered the hotel with him. After they checked in, Su Yuebai didn’t leave.
It was already very late—3:50 AM. She thought they were just close friends, that it was fine to share a room. They had known each other for years, and it felt safe. Plus, there were two beds—they could just sleep separately.
So she stayed that night. Nothing happened between them. Her male best friend did try to make a move, but she firmly refused.
Now that she looked back, she realized—she had been about to get married, yet stayed in a hotel room alone with another man. That was wrong! He was a man—not a woman!
Back then, she didn’t know what she was thinking. It was like her mind had been poisoned by all the nonsense advice online, convincing her that this was normal.
But relationships are defined by gender, and now she wondered what was going through her head at the time!
More importantly, having a male best friend was already inappropriate! Women shouldn’t have male best friends—especially not when they have a fiancé!
The next day, her white moonlight was about to leave. She told him not to mention anything to her fiancé. He agreed.
Su Yuebai had never told Zhang Xiaofeng about this incident. She didn’t dare. She was afraid he’d be furious.
So she kept it hidden.
But now… she deeply regretted it. She covered her face and cried in pain.
What she did was wrong! If Zhang Xiaofeng ever found out she kept something like this from him, he would definitely overthink. He’d believe that she had cheated on him, that she had put a green hat on his head. Otherwise, why would she hide it?
But she didn’t cheat!
She had never told anyone about this. Not even Grandma knew. If Zhang Xiaofeng were to find out, it could only be because that male best friend told him.
But fortunately, the two of them didn’t know each other.
Even so, Su Yuebai now had some doubts. Did Zhang Xiaofeng hate her so much because that guy secretly told him?
Could it be that her male best friend had deliberately sabotaged her relationship and stirred things up to break off her marriage?
Her lips trembled. She was filled with grief and couldn’t say a word. She quickly got up and walked to a more private spot.
A short while later, she found a restroom and took out her phone to make a call.
Ring… ring… ring…
It took a long time before the call connected. Su Yuebai asked anxiously, “Zhang Wenjun, did you tell my fiancé about what happened that night?”
A voice answered, “No.”
“I don’t believe you. You really didn’t say anything?”
“If you don’t believe me, there’s nothing I can do. If that’s all, I’m hanging up.”
“Wait… okay, it’s not that I don’t believe you, I’m just nervous.”
“It’s fine. Really, I didn’t say anything.”
…
The call ended. Su Yuebai was still flustered. She couldn’t tell if he was lying or not.
Probably… not?
She was terrified that Zhang Xiaofeng would find out. She could only try to convince herself this way.
…
By noon, Zhang Xiaofeng finished work. As he came downstairs, he saw from afar that Su Yuebai and Grandma were still there!
Su Yuebai sat by the flowerbed, crying. Many people nearby were whispering. Her face flushed red from embarrassment, but she still stubbornly stayed.
As for Grandma, her mood was low, and she kept trying to persuade her to leave. But Su Yuebai clutched her head and cried, saying, “I won’t leave. I’m not leaving…!”
Zhang Xiaofeng didn’t bother with them. He turned and left, then slipped out quietly through the back entrance.
…
Meanwhile, inside the Su Family’s villa, Su Mingxin sat on a chair with his father, both of them wearing cold expressions.
“Dad, that guy from the Northwest is gone. Su Yuebai is all alone now. I’m getting impatient!”
His father, a middle-aged man with a face full of scruffy beard, replied in a deep voice, “Good. Being impatient shows you’ve got ambition! Honestly, I’m impatient too. To avoid trouble later, let’s just strike early!”
“Yes, Dad. Let’s do it!”
