Chapter 41: The White Lotus’ Little Tricks Were Exposed

Lu Ning’s eyes were pitch black, as if she wanted to devour someone alive.

Qin Xiang took a step back, “Ningning, why are you looking at me like that? I didn’t drop your stationery.”

Lu Nanfeng walked over, “Ningning, what’s wrong?”

Lu Ning suppressed the anger in her heart with great effort, “The stationery is defective.”

“How could it be defective?”

Lu Nanfeng glanced at the stationery and his expression changed drastically, “Go inside first. I’ll buy you new ones right away.”

Lu Ning regretted a little inside. She shouldn’t have returned to the Lu family. This time she had been careless.

She intended to call Ji Chiqian. She didn’t trust Second Brother’s promises at all.

Qin Xiang said, “Second Brother, why don’t I give my stationery to Ningning? I’ll wait for you to bring new ones.”

“No need, I’ll get them.”

Lu Nanfeng turned to Lu Ning, “Ningning, trust Second Brother. Go in first, otherwise you’ll be late.”

Lu Ning gave Lu Nanfeng a look, then turned and walked toward the school, heading for the exam venue.

It was raining heavily and traffic was bad — time was tight.

But she had a bad feeling in her heart.

As Qin Xiang passed by holding her umbrella, she said hypocritically, “I hope Second Brother makes it back before the exam starts.”

Lu Ning held her black umbrella, silently looking ahead, ignoring Qin Xiang completely.

Qin Xiang, left embarrassed, stomped her feet and left.

After all, Qin Xiang still felt a little unwilling. She had planned for Lu Ning to find out about the defective stationery only during the exam. Lu Ning’s luck was really too good.

The rain grew heavier.

Lu Ning immediately called Ji Chiqian.

He picked up instantly, “What’s wrong? Shouldn’t you be in the classroom by now?”

“My stationery is defective. I’m waiting for Second Brother to bring new ones, but he hasn’t returned yet.”

Ji Chiqian sat up straight, “Go wait in the classroom.”

After the call ended, Lu Ning kept watching outside until the teacher reminded her to head in. She turned and walked toward the campus.

She trusted Ji Chiqian.

Lu Ning entered the classroom, found her seat, and sat down until the bell rang.

The principal hurried in with new stationery, handed it to the invigilating teacher for inspection, and then passed it to Lu Ning.

Lu Ning was a little surprised — why was the principal delivering it?

But there was no time to think — the exam was starting.

Time passed by minute by minute.

After finishing the first subject, Lu Ning let out a sigh of relief.

Walking out of the exam hall, she looked up at the sky, feeling pretty good.

As she reached the school gate, Lu Nanfeng rushed over, “Ningning, are you okay? It was raining heavily, and the driver took a wrong turn. I spent a long time buying the stationery, but I was too late.”

Lu Nanfeng was soaked, his face full of guilt.

Lu Ning remained expressionless. She had already expected this. But now, she wasn’t even angry.

She had long grown used to disappointment with her brothers.

When you stop caring, it doesn’t hurt anymore.

Seeing Lu Ning’s expression, Lu Nanfeng felt scared, “Ningning, say something. Even if you scold me!”

Lu Ning stepped back, widening the distance.

Lu Nanfeng’s heart sank.

At this moment, Qin Xiang ran over, “Second Brother, you were late delivering the stationery? That must have affected Ningning a lot.”

Seeing Lu Ning’s indifferent face, Qin Xiang felt a little pleased.

Lu Nanfeng looked at Lu Ning with guilt, “I’m sorry, it was really my fault. If your exam results are affected, I’ll accompany you to retake the year.”

Lu Ning suddenly sneered coldly, “Second Brother, forget it. Just let it be.”

Lu Nanfeng froze — what did “just let it be” mean?

He would have preferred if she got angry and blamed him — anything but this cold indifference, treating him like a stranger.

Lu Ning turned and walked to the other side where Ji Chiqian stood quietly, holding a black umbrella, waiting for her.

Lu Ning quickened her pace and ran over. She looked up and said, “You asked the principal to deliver the stationery?”

Ji Chiqian noticed the smile on her face and knew she hadn’t been affected by the incident.

Suppressing his displeasure, he answered calmly, “Mm.”

“Thanks, you really saved me!”

Lu Ning rubbed her stomach, “I’m hungry. Let’s go eat. I have to prepare for the next exam this afternoon.”

After getting into the car, they heard Lu Nanfeng’s panicked voice outside, “Ningning, where are you going? I want to talk to you!”

Lu Nanfeng pressed his hand against the car door, looking anxiously inside at Lu Ning.

Lu Ning remained cold, “There’s no need.”

“Ningning, I really didn’t mean to be late.”

Lu Ning’s clear eyes stared at him, “I know. Now can you let go?”

But Lu Nanfeng didn’t let go.

Or rather, he didn’t dare to let go.

He had a bad feeling — once he let go, Lu Ning would never come back.

Gu Zifeng couldn’t stand it. He walked over, grabbed Lu Nanfeng’s collar, “Bro, this isn’t cool!”

“I’m her brother. What about you guys?”

Lu Nanfeng was a bit hysterical.

Gu Zifeng sneered, “Never seen a brother who makes things worse. Her stationery was prepared by you guys and was defective. Then you promised her and still showed up late. Your family’s really something.”

He had witnessed enough of Lu Ning’s miserable life to be fed up.

Who could do something this disgusting?

It was obvious — the stationery couldn’t have been defective by accident!

Lu Nanfeng was stunned, “I didn’t know.”

“If you didn’t know, then find out! Why are you pestering Xiao Ning and forcing her to forgive you? I’m worried her stationery is just the start — what if next time, it’s her food that’s tampered with and she can’t sit the exam?”

Gu Zifeng didn’t mince his words.

Lu Nanfeng was shoved aside, staggering, watching Lu Ning drive away.

In his thirty years of life, it was the first time he felt real fear.

Qin Xiang pretended to run over concerned, “Second Brother, it’s normal for Ningning to be angry. You really were late. But the exam is important. She should come home to live.”

If Lu Ning left, how would she manipulate her?

Lu Nanfeng’s expression cracked, his voice hoarse, “Where’s the butler? He prepared the stationery!”

He wanted to see why Lu Ning’s stationery was faulty.

Qin Xiang’s face tensed, “Second Brother, why are you suspecting the butler? He prepared mine too, and it’s fine.”

But Lu Nanfeng’s face was cold as he strode away.

Qin Xiang clutched her fingers tightly and quickly messaged the butler: [Second Brother is coming to check on you. Be careful.]

Though Lu Ning left, at least her exam was disrupted — she wouldn’t perform as well afterward.

Seeing Lu Ning’s attitude toward Lu Nanfeng, it seemed she didn’t intend to reconcile.

Good.

…

Lu Ning sat in the car, watching the rain outside, now much lighter.

The car was silent.

Ji Chiqian turned to her, his tone calm, “Don’t be affected. Don’t go back for the next few days.”

Lu Ning nodded, “I think so too. It’s better to stay at the apartment.”

By the afternoon exam, the rain had stopped.

Lu Ning sat for the exam smoothly. The math test was tough, but she thought she did okay.

Leaving the exam hall, she heard the wails around her — everyone was complaining about how hard it was.

As she walked out of the school gate, she saw Lu Nanfeng.

Her steps paused, and she turned her head to walk in the opposite direction.

“Ningning, I brought the butler to apologize to you.”
