Chapter 81: Only After Losing Did They Realize How Important Lu Ning Was

Lu Ning saw the result of the match and wasn’t surprised at all.

It was inevitable.

If Lu Liu hadn’t insisted on having Qin Xiang as the artillery player and had found someone truly skilled, they might not have lost so badly—maybe they wouldn’t have lost at all.

But Lu Liu just had to put Qin Xiang in that position, trying to prove that she was enough.

Clearly, Sixth Brother’s personality hadn’t changed at all.

Heh. Lu Ning showed a faint smile. She wondered if this outcome satisfied him.

Anyway, she was satisfied.

In her past life, she worked hard to win the championship for the team, only to be replaced last minute by Qin Xiang, who claimed the trophy.

This time, she quit the competition with her own hands and watched Sixth Brother lose with her own eyes.

On stage, Lu Liu’s face was grim as he left without a word.

The winning team was interviewed by reporters. Their captain glanced toward the audience, “This match was really easy for us. We had prepared ourselves for elimination, but when we found out Lu Ning wasn’t competing, we saw it as a golden opportunity.”

If Lu Ning had been on the team—with her ability to unleash a Twelve-Strike Combo—they might not have won at all.

Lu Ning calmly sipped her drink. A reporter held a microphone to her, “Miss Lu, do you have anything to say about today’s match?”

“Competitions have winners and losers. But I believe the final champion will represent the country and bring honor.”

She gave a standard answer.

Lu Ning stood up and glanced at Jiang Lu, “Class rep, let’s go.”

Lu Nanfeng watched Lu Ning’s departing back before turning and heading to the lounge. Inside, Lu Liu was furiously scolding someone.

Qin Xiang was being yelled at miserably. Though she felt wronged, she had tried her best—it wasn’t her fault the team wasn’t strong enough.

Lu Nanfeng walked over, “Everyone’s worked hard. Let’s get on the bus.”

The other players filed out. Qin Xiang wiped her tears, “Second Brother, I really tried my best.”

“I know. Go join the others.”

Qin Xiang didn’t want to stay there any longer and quickly left.

Lu Liu, still frustrated, said, “Second Brother, do you think that counts as trying? She wasn’t even a tenth as good as Lu Ning! And I trusted her!”

“You can’t blame Xiangxiang. You knew her level and still put her in the match. You just wanted to spite Ningning, and now you’re reaping the consequences.”

Lu Liu was stifled. He admitted he had that thought—but he hadn’t expected Qin Xiang to perform this badly.

He thought she had at least improved a little.

Turned out, no improvement at all!

“Sixth Brother, Xiangxiang did her best. You can’t blame her. You’re the one who pushed Ningning away; blame yourself.”

Lu Liu slumped in his seat, covering his face with his hand, feeling miserable.

He really realized—life without Lu Ning felt like something important was missing.

…

After leaving the match venue, Lu Ning was once again surrounded by fans.

She finally managed to hail a cab and leave.

Back at the apartment, she relaxed a little.

Gu Zifeng was sitting on the sofa, “Xiao Ning, didn’t today’s match feel satisfying to watch?”

“Very satisfying.”

Lu Ning sat down. Even though she had expected the result, seeing it unfold was still delightful.

“Xiao Ning, look! Someone made a dubbed commentary video of today’s match. It’s hilarious!”

Lu Ning glanced at the video. It was filled with clips of Qin Xiang’s awful gameplay, paired with comical voiceovers.

[“Little White Lotus Sister, your shooting speed can’t even keep up with your crying!”]

[“Sister, you’re an artillery player, not a delicate princess needing protection. You’re supposed to protect others!”]

Lu Ning watched with a smile, “If the person involved saw this, they’d definitely cry and do a livestream to complain.”

She knew Qin Xiang too well.

Sure enough, soon after, Qin Xiang publicly announced she would sue the video creator for defamation.

The Lu Tian Team’s disastrous defeat became a laughingstock within the gaming community for days, providing endless material for memes and jokes.

But during this time, Lu Ning got a call from her eldest brother scolding her, “Ningning, you didn’t participate in the finals? What’s wrong with you? Even if you’re mad, couldn’t you have picked a better time?”

Lu Ning’s voice was cold and mocking, “Sixth Brother didn’t want me to play in the first place. Later, when he couldn’t find a better replacement, he got what he deserved and lost.”

“You know your Sixth Brother’s temper. He just couldn’t bring himself to ask you directly. As his sister, couldn’t you have taken the initiative?”

Lu Ning replied indifferently, “No, I couldn’t.”

Then she hung up.

Her good mood was ruined a bit.

But it proved something—she had spoiled her family too much in her past life, making them accustomed to taking her for granted and treating her like someone they could endlessly demand from.

She wasn’t that foolish anymore.

After venting the frustrations from her past life, Lu Ning slept very well for the next few days.

Shortly after the finals, the college entrance exam results were released.

On the day the results came out, Lu Ning hardly slept the night before. Early in the morning, she sat in front of her computer waiting.

Ji Chiqian walked in with a plate of fruit, “Don’t be nervous. You really have so little confidence?”

“Yeah, a bit. I just want to see the result.”

Even though she had lived once before and knew many outcomes, she had no idea what the result would be this time.

Gu Zifeng entered carrying peanuts and sunflower seeds, placing them on the table, “Snack while you wait. This is my first time waiting for gaokao results too.”

“You guys didn’t take the gaokao?”

Lu Ning looked at them in surprise.

Ji Chiqian glanced at Gu Zifeng and said, “We were recommended students. We didn’t take the final exam.”

“Yeah, that’s right. We got in through recommendation.”

Gu Zifeng realized he almost slipped.

In their case, it was either recommendation or studying abroad.

Lu Ning immediately looked at them with respect, “Were you guys recommended to Yun University?”

“Cough, cough, how did you guess? So smart!”

“I just didn’t think you guys would be that amazing.”

Being recommended was no small feat!

Gu Zifeng quickly changed the subject, “It’s about time, right? Xiao Ning, open the webpage first in case it gets too crowded later.”

Lu Ning didn’t ask more questions.

She took a deep breath and logged onto the webpage.

When the time arrived, she entered her exam number and password, clicking on the results query.

When the result page loaded, she was stunned, “Why is it showing all asterisks?”

Did the site crash?
