Chapter 1: Torrential Rain.

“Haa…”

Inside the room, dim yellow light lingered like the fading glow of sunset, gently spilling across four computer screens that had been left running nonstop.

In front of one of them sat a thin young man. Heavy dark circles clung to his pale face like ink, stark and unmistakable.

Yet his eyes were deep—profoundly deep—like a bottomless well that concealed countless thoughts.

The four screens all displayed nearly identical game interfaces, clearly showing that the same game was running on all of them at once.

“Madman, I’ve already transferred the money to your account. Thanks.”

A message popped up on the screen. The sender’s ID read: “Piggy Overlord.”

Without hesitation, the young man’s fingers danced rapidly across the keyboard.

Madman: Bro Pig, no need to be polite. I’ve been sick of those trash dogs for ages. This week, we’ll crush them completely.

Piggy Overlord: Relax. With the resources you brought, victory is guaranteed.

Piggy Overlord: (?????)

…

Lu Ningfeng let out a long breath.

Seeing the payment notification on his phone, he finally felt a bit of weight lift off his chest.

“With this 3,000… Xiao Xue’s tuition for next year is finally covered…”

He stood up, lit a cigarette, and walked out of the room.

To the left of his room was a tightly shut door. Diagonally across stood the entrance to the rented apartment.

The living room was cramped. A small dining table and two chairs already occupied half the space, and several empty instant noodle cups were still scattered across the tabletop.

Turning sideways, Lu Ningfeng squeezed past the table, exhaling smoke as he made his way to the even narrower balcony, barely wide enough for one person to pass.

He didn’t like smoking. However, without occasionally relying on it to ease the pressure, he was afraid he might not be able to hold on.

The Lu Family had once been considered modestly well-off. They owned a home in the city, and his parents’ salaries not only covered the mortgage but also allowed their two children to receive a good education.

Lu Ningfeng himself had been promising. He got into a good university, bringing great pride to his parents.

After entering university and then pursuing postgraduate studies, whether he chose a stable government position or relied on his own abilities to carve out a future, he had every chance to become the pillar of the family.

However, fate was unpredictable.

Five years ago, his parents died in a car accident, leaving behind the two siblings.

There wasn’t much money left at home, and his father’s business had left behind a debt of 300,000.

That year, Lu Ningfeng was eighteen, and his younger sister was thirteen.

There were quite a few relatives, but with a 300,000 debt hanging over their heads, the siblings were unwelcome wherever they went.

Lu Ningfeng dropped out of school and rented a place with his sister.

He had good relationships in university. His dormmates were decent people and pooled together some money to help him. With that, he rented this place, sent his sister back to school, and started gaming using the computer he had bought when he first entered university.

A young man who had only completed his first year—how could he quickly make money in society without breaking the law?

Find a job? Impossible. No diploma, no experience. The meager wages he could earn wouldn’t even be enough to support himself and his sister, let alone repay the debt.

So, gaming became his only path.

Power leveling, farming gold, grinding resources… these became Lu Ningfeng’s work.

After five years, he had finally managed to repay the debt.

And just now, he had scraped together enough for his sister’s next year’s tuition, with some left over.

It seemed this year, they could finally have a good New Year.

“Tch… why won’t it stop raining?”

Standing on the narrow balcony, Lu Ningfeng looked up at the sky, his brows tightly furrowed. The sky resembled a massive funnel, with rain pouring down from it like a relentless waterfall.

He didn’t like rain.

The day his parents died… it had rained like this too.

However, thinking of something, he lifted his head proudly, gazing at the dark, oppressive sky with a faint snort. “So what? I still made it!”

What made him most proud was his younger sister, Lu Ningxue.

Last year, she had entered the same university he once attended, and with even better results.

He, a man without a degree drifting through society, had not only repaid the debt over five years but also placed his sister on a bright and promising path.

As the cigarette burned out, Lu Ningfeng turned back and glanced at the pile of instant noodle containers in the living room, clicking his tongue. “What a hassle…”

If Xiao Xue came back and saw this, she would definitely get angry again.

Today was the day her break started.

Without wasting time, Lu Ningfeng quickly stuffed all the empty containers into a large bag, carried it to the balcony, aimed at the trash pile below, and tossed it down.

Thud!

“Which bastard threw that? Scared the hell out of me!”

A loud curse came from downstairs, but Lu Ningfeng ignored it as his phone buzzed with a message.

He opened it.

Xiao Xue: Pick me up.

Short and simple, with a hint of coldness.

Lu Ningfeng didn’t mind at all.

The year their parents passed, Xiao Xue had become somewhat withdrawn. Fortunately, after so many years, she had improved.

He knew her well. She was cold on the outside but warm inside. If she were truly distant, she wouldn’t return every week and immediately drag out his mountain of dirty clothes to wash.

“Alright, wait for me.”

He replied, slipped his phone into his pocket, grabbed an umbrella, and headed out.

“Tch… this rain…”

Holding the umbrella, Lu Ningfeng looked at the water that nearly reached his ankles, frowning deeply as he stood still for a moment like a statue.

Rain hammered down like a waterfall, striking the umbrella with dull thuds, as if issuing a warning.

With his savings, he couldn’t afford a better place. This was an urban village—two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Including rent and utilities, it only cost 1,500 per month.

Cheap, yes—but the conditions were terrible.

“Next year, I’ll rent a place near Xiao Xue’s university. It’ll be more convenient.”

Muttering to himself, he stepped into the water in slippers, carrying a pair of small rain boots, and walked toward the alley’s exit.

With the debt repaid, he could finally breathe and start planning for the future.

This was a remote urban village. At its entrance lay a wide road, winding into the distance like a giant serpent.

Above it ran an elevated highway, like a silver dragon coiled in the sky, with vehicles flowing endlessly like a charging army.

The rain poured heavily, dark clouds pressing low.

Weather like this always made people long for the warmth of home.

At the village entrance was a bus stop, with several shared bicycles parked nearby—the most common way for residents here to get around.

Under the shelter stood a lone figure.

A young girl.

Her long, jet-black hair fell naturally down her back, smooth and soft like silk.

Her eyes were bright and clear, like stars, shimmering with a gentle light. Her skin was fair as snow, delicate like jade.

She carried a light blue backpack, and beside her rested a white suitcase. She gazed at the sky, slightly lost in thought.

For a moment, she seemed to see something, a faint smile appearing on her lips. Her eyes curved like crescent moons, brimming with spirit.

But soon, she restrained her smile, crossed her arms, and adopted a deliberately indifferent expression, looking toward the young man approaching from the crosswalk.

The young man braved the heavy rain, glancing left and right to avoid passing vehicles, and soon reached her side.

“Look what I found? A long-haired beauty! Guys, who gets this? She wants to come home with me!”

Lu Ningfeng exaggerated his expression, acting shamelessly as he grabbed the girl’s soft hand.

A slightly chubby passerby holding an umbrella turned around in shock. Seeing the girl’s face, he was stunned.

Thinking she was being harassed, he immediately prepared to step in.

But the next moment left him speechless.

The girl took the bag containing the rain boots from Lu Ningfeng and snorted lightly, pretending indifference. “Why are you so slow?”

She took out the boots and sat on the metal bench to change her shoes.

So they were a couple. What nonsense about “finding a beauty.” Clickbait deserved to die.

The chubby man felt like he had been force-fed affection, choking on it even in the pouring rain, and quickly left.

Only Lu Ningfeng noticed the fleeting trace of embarrassment that flashed across the girl’s face.

He had done it on purpose. Especially outside, he would occasionally tease Lu Ningxue, trying to ease her withdrawn nature.

He was satisfied. At least, compared to five years ago, she had improved greatly.

After changing into the boots and packing her original shoes, Lu Ningxue stood up. Seeing the smile in Lu Ningfeng’s eyes, she glared at him, a little annoyed.

But when she noticed the heavy dark circles under his eyes and the exhaustion hidden within them, her chest tightened painfully, as if an invisible hand were gripping her heart.

Those dark circles were like a pitch-black night, overshadowing his gaze.

The exhaustion in his eyes resembled a deep ocean—calm on the surface yet unfathomable beneath, filled with endless sorrow and helplessness.

Yet whenever those eyes looked at her, they always seemed to carry light.

She didn’t want to study. The more she studied, the heavier the burden on her brother.

But he had told her, “I can fall into the mud, but you can’t. You’re my sister. I only have you.”

She couldn’t refuse him.

She studied hard and was intelligent, often earning scholarships to ease his burden.

Yet the lingering debt and the threats from creditors had always been like a boulder hanging over his head.

Her once confident and handsome brother had grown worn and weary.

She saw it all. It hurt her deeply.

But she also understood—he was the pillar of the family, and she was his hope. One day, she would make sure he lived a happy life.

“Sigh… the village won’t fix the drainage. The water downstairs is deep enough to raise fish. That’s not a road people can walk on…”

Lu Ningfeng rambled, explaining why he was late.

“Let’s go, brother. We’ll talk at home.”

Lu Ningxue tied the bag and interrupted him. Though her face remained calm, a faint smile lingered in her eyes.

It had been so long… since she had heard him talk like this.

Lu Ningfeng chuckled. “Yeah… let’s go home.”

…

The rain grew heavier.

There was no sign of it stopping.

It was as if the heavens were forcing an ancient dragon to pour out endless water.

“Strange… why is it raining this hard?”

The driver muttered.

The windshield wipers were working furiously, yet visibility remained extremely low.

“Slow down! Watch out for pedestrians,” the passenger said.

“It’s fine. I’m not speeding. Besides, in this kind of rain, there are barely any cars, so where would—”

“SCREEEECH!!!”

The last thing Lu Ningfeng heard was the shrill scream of tires grinding violently against the road, like a demon’s roar, like a storm howling, tearing at his very soul.

He only had time to pull his sister into his arms.

The pain… seemed to vanish.

With great effort, Lu Ningfeng raised his head. Through blood-red vision, he barely saw that less than 1 meter away, Lu Ningxue lay motionless in the rain.

“Xiao… Xue…”

He tried to move toward her. Only his left hand could barely respond. His fingers clawed at the ground as he dragged himself forward.

“Xiao Xue… Xiao Xue…”

When he finally reached her and saw her condition, his pupils shrank violently, as if he had witnessed the most horrifying sight in the world.

His body turned unbearably heavy. All strength left him, and he collapsed like a deflated balloon.

His head slammed heavily against the ground with a dull thud, as if the entire world trembled.

“Brother… it’s cold…”
