Chapter 2: Lu Ningfeng? Su Ningxue!

Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going?

His mind was in complete chaos, as if countless needles were stabbing into his brain, or as if a hand had been plunged into his skull and was stirring everything violently.

With great effort, he forced his eyelids open and glanced at his surroundings.

It seemed to be a room built mostly of wood. Strange… what kind of hospital was this? So crude.

A woman dressed in black sat on a chair, watching him. She looked oddly familiar.

Suddenly, a sharper wave of pain surged through his head, and his eyes shut again instinctively.

Fragments of memories—uncertain, overlapping, half real and half illusion—flooded his mind like wild horses breaking free of their reins, crashing relentlessly into his consciousness.

He was intelligent. Even with the splitting headache, he decisively asked himself Plato’s three questions of the soul.

My name is Lu Ningfeng.

I come from the Lu Family of the Heavenly Azure Realm. My cultivation is at the great perfection of the Soul Spirit Realm. In order to achieve a perfect breakthrough into the Nirvana Realm, I descended into the lower world of the Heavenly Azure Realm—the Heavenly Martial Continent—to temper my heart through the mortal world.

I suppressed my cultivation and entered the Azure Mist Sect of the Heavenly Martial Continent, becoming the Chief Disciple.

I sought to re-experience every cultivation stage, to comprehend the mortal world, and refine both my cultivation and Dao heart to perfection, so that I could step into the Nirvana Realm in a flawless state.

Why undertake this journey?

Because the most mysterious secret realm of the Heavenly Martial Continent—the Netherpass Secret Realm—was about to open. It was a grand event shared by all cultivators on the continent.

The Netherpass Secret Realm had once been another continent belonging to the Heavenly Azure Realm. Due to the exhaustion of its world origin, life there gradually perished, and it ultimately separated from the Heavenly Azure Realm.

A great cultivator from the Heavenly Azure Realm captured this remnant world, sealed and transformed it, turning it into a place of trials and opportunities for this lower world. It opened once every ten years.

The opportunities lay not only in the possible inheritances left behind by the former forces of that world, but also in the remnant world itself.

Such opportunities were meant to nurture the younger generation of geniuses, and thus there was an age restriction—only those under thirty years old could enter.

Each time the Netherpass Secret Realm opened, all knowledgeable individuals and factions across the Heavenly Martial Continent would gather in Tongyou City, waiting for the secret realm to open before sending their younger disciples inside to seek opportunities.

Lu Ningfeng’s journey was to lead the Azure Mist Sect’s disciples to Tongyou City as their head, awaiting the opening of the Netherpass Secret Realm.

This journey was both a trial for his junior brothers and sisters, and a form of tempering for himself.

To read ten thousand books is not enough; one must also travel great distances.

Burying oneself solely in cultivation would never allow one to go far on this path.

Thus, the true disciples of great factions placed great importance on tempering their temperament and Dao heart.

He vaguely remembered that on the way to Tongyou City, they encountered a demonic beast disaster attacking a mortal village, already showing signs of forming a beast tide.

Lu Ningfeng would naturally not stand by and watch people die. Moreover, it served as a perfect trial for his junior brothers and sisters.

The disciples accompanying him from the Azure Mist Sect were all elites. The weakest among them had reached the second stage of cultivation, the great perfection of the Iron Bone Stage, while many had progressed far along the third stage, the Body Refining Stage.

The Three Body Refinement Stages: Copper Skin Stage, Iron Bone Stage, Body Refining Stage.

Tempering the skin, refining the bones, and strengthening the organs—enhancing the body in all aspects to prepare for the Three Spirit Absorption Stages.

The Three Spirit Absorption Stages: Spirit Bearing Stage, Spirit Transformation Stage, Soul Spirit Realm.

Once the body was strong enough, it could bear the spiritual energy of heaven and earth, merge with it, and eventually use it to temper the soul.

All of this was to strengthen oneself. A cultivator had to accumulate a deep foundation until one could break through in a single step, shedding the mortal body and entering the Nirvana Realm.

This applied to both humans and demonic beasts alike.

Facing the Azure Mist Sect’s elite disciples, whose average cultivation was at the Body Refining Stage, even the great demon behind the disaster—already in the Spirit Bearing Stage—was no match.

However, while the Azure Mist Sect disciples were exterminating the beasts and treating the wounded, another force joined the battle.

The Ancient Sword Sect.

The Ancient Sword Sect, along with the Azure Mist Sect and three other sects, were known as the Five Great Sacred Lands of the Heavenly Martial Continent. Such great forces naturally bore a responsibility to protect mortals.

After all, cultivators came from the mortal world. They could not stand by and watch their own kind slaughtered by demons.

Originally, the cooperation between the two sacred lands’ young geniuses to save the village and quell the disaster should have been a commendable tale.

However, a dispute arose over the distribution of spoils.

Demonic beasts devoured humans, but humans could also use their bodies to refine various items—such as pills that strengthened the physique.

Their materials could be used to forge Spirit Weapons, enhancing power. Even their flesh could be turned into spiritual cuisine, boosting vitality.

The corpses of lesser demons were of little interest to the elite disciples of both sects.

But the body of the Spirit Bearing Stage great demon was different.

It was an aged Evil Flood Dragon, nearing the end of its lifespan. Seeing no hope of breaking through, it had resorted to devouring human blood essence in a desperate attempt to advance.

An Evil Flood Dragon of the Spirit Bearing Stage possessed countless valuable materials. Its flesh could provide immense vitality for disciples in the Three Body Refinement Stages. Its tendons, skin, bones, and horn were all treasures, capable of producing high-grade Spirit Weapons.

Thus, conflict arose over its division.

The Azure Mist Sect had arrived first and had been the first to engage the flood dragon, preventing it from causing greater destruction. They had contributed the most.

Yet when both sides joined forces to kill it, the final blow had been delivered by a disciple of the Ancient Sword Sect named Yang Kai.

Neither side was willing to back down.

In the end, Lu Ningfeng intervened. He split the flood dragon in two, forcibly suppressing the dispute. However, the most valuable part—the dragon horn—remained with the Azure Mist Sect.

The Ancient Sword Sect’s main leader had not been present. Only an elder who had just entered the Spirit Transformation Stage oversaw their side.

Meanwhile, the Azure Mist Sect not only had Lu Ningfeng—whose cultivation they could not discern—but also an elder at the Soul Spirit Realm. They could only swallow the loss.

From the Azure Mist Sect’s perspective, the matter should have ended there.

However, on the following night, a woman in black secretly approached to probe Lu Ningfeng.

She hid in the shadows and launched a surprise attack while he was unprepared. Yet Lu Ningfeng was no weakling. During the exchange, he learned her identity—the Chief Disciple of the Ancient Sword Sect, Su Ningxue.

Any young cultivator capable of matching him was clearly also from the Heavenly Azure Realm.

Thanks to his cautious nature, Lu Ningfeng had already set up defensive measures the previous night and successfully restrained her.

But unexpectedly, the woman seemed to have lost her mind and unleashed a soul attack.

As a Soul Spirit Realm cultivator, attacks targeting the soul were the most dangerous, especially against those of equal or lower cultivation.

Given that both were from the upper realm and unclear of each other’s intentions, probing each other was normal. But this woman had directly risked everything with soul techniques.

With no choice, Lu Ningfeng launched his own soul attack.

Soul battles were extremely dangerous.

In the end, both perished together.

Wait…

Lu Ningfeng suddenly froze.

Black clothes… Su Ningxue! She didn’t die!?

When he had first glanced at her, that strange sense of familiarity had lowered his guard.

His head still throbbed, but he could not remain passive. He tried to mobilize spiritual energy to protect himself.

However, another wave of dizziness struck. More images flooded his mind, leaving him unable to resist.

Familiar yet distant scenes flashed by.

I am…

Lu Ningfeng…

Blue Star.

Huaxia.

Lu Ningfeng.

Torrential rain.

A speeding truck.

The screech of tires against the ground.

Xiao Xue lying in a pool of blood.

…

“XIAO XUE!!!”

The white-robed young man lying on the ground suddenly sat up. His originally handsome face had twisted into something ferocious, like a ghost clawing its way out of hell.

The moment he sat up, he let out a hysterical scream, as violent as a storm, venting all the unwillingness and despair within him.

His eyes were filled with profound sorrow, as if his soul had been torn into countless fragments.

His lips trembled, trying to speak but unable to form words. His entire body shook uncontrollably, as though enduring unbearable pain.

Around him, there was silence. Only his scream echoed, piercing the night like a blade, chilling and shocking.

Hearing his cry, the black-clad Su Ningxue—who had been sitting absentmindedly—trembled violently.

“Brother!”

A trembling, delicate voice rang out.

The woman rushed into Lu Ningfeng’s arms like a swallow returning to its nest, sobbing softly as if pouring out all her fear and despair.

This left Lu Ningfeng completely stunned.

What was wrong with this crazy woman? In his memory, she had just died together with “him.”

Wait…

Died together?

Lu Ningfeng’s mind raced.

It was certain that “Lu Ningfeng” and his opponent should both have died—they had practically witnessed each other’s death.

But… she was alive. She looked strikingly similar to Lu Ningxue, and she even called him “brother.”

…

His body trembled slightly, afraid that this might all be a dream. He carefully leaned closer and softly asked in her ear, “Odd stays, even changes?”

Su Ningxue lifted her head. Her face was still tear-streaked, her eyes red.

Yet at his question, she seemed half amused and half exasperated by her foolish brother. Her expression was as radiant as a rainbow after rain, her laughter like silver bells.

“Symbols depend on the quadrant. Hmph! You actually doubted me, you idiot brother!”

Joy surged visibly across Lu Ningfeng’s face.

Su Ningxue… no, Lu Ningxue—his Xiao Xue—had transmigrated into this world with him!

“Xiao Xue, I…”

He had countless things to say.

But before he could speak, his lips were suddenly sealed by a soft, sweet warmth.

…
