Chapter 5: Does Gu Yuyao Know Your Mother Has Passed?

Her gaze was terrifyingly cold—like blades. Just a single glance could extinguish any fantasy or interest a man might have toward her.

Any ordinary woman, when seen naked by a stranger, would blush, scream, or panic. But not this woman. She stared at Ye Cang with the same chilling look, as if she weren’t the one being taken advantage of, but rather Ye Cang was the one overstepping.

“If you don’t want to die, don’t come in.” She warned Ye Cang flatly.

Huh?

Ye Cang thought she was threatening him and instinctively looked around. Footsteps echoed outside. When he entered the building earlier, he had sensed it—this skyscraper might seem empty, but its security was as tight as a fortress.

“Even though I don’t know how you got in, I don’t want to hurt you.” Her cold voice came again, making Ye Cang raise an eyebrow.

Isn’t that backwards?

“I know you don’t believe me, but it’s true,” she continued. “Any man who comes close to me will face misfortune. Best case, bad luck and illness. Worst case, sudden death and catastrophe for their entire family.”

As she said this, Ye Cang noticed a trace of sorrow beneath the frost in her eyes. She wasn’t lying.

So this was why Qiao Xu—the battle-hardened warrior—was terrified to enter!

Ye Cang looked at the woman in the room, pondering. This woman… has serious issues.

Just as Qin Junfei thought Ye Cang had been scared off and turned to wipe herself down, the door suddenly swung open with a loud bang.

Ye Cang walked in confidently.

Qin Junfei was startled, quickly wrapping herself in her silk robe and stepping back with a guarded glare. Her face flushed with anger, and her delicate collarbones trembled slightly. Even when furious, she was breathtaking.

“Didn’t I tell you not to come in? Do you have a death wish?” she snapped through clenched teeth.

“Maybe you’re right. But I was born immune to lightning and fire—your curse doesn’t affect me,” Ye Cang said calmly, his eyes clear and steady.

That actually threw Qin Junfei off. No one had ever dared approach her like this.

“You…” she choked, unable to say another word as Ye Cang approached.

Unaccustomed to such closeness, she panicked. “What are you doing—ah!”

She slipped, lost her balance, and fell back.

At the last second, a strong arm caught her.

Looking up at Ye Cang from such a close distance, her heart trembled. He was across the room just moments ago—how did he get here so fast?

Their eyes met, and time seemed to freeze.

“Miss, what happened? Ah!!” A shriek shattered the moment.

Pan Min rushed in with others. The entire building seemed staffed only by women—even the bodyguards were female.

What did she see?

A strange man in her lady’s private quarters?

And that man was holding Miss… at zero distance?

BOOM!

Like thunder on a clear day—this was a disaster!

Pan Min’s eyes nearly burst with rage as she screamed, “Who are you? Let go of Miss right now!”

Before Ye Cang could respond, she shouted again, “Seize him! Throw him out!”

“Stop!” Qin Junfei yelled.

“But—”

“I said stop!” Her voice turned sharp.

Pan Min could only dismiss the guards, though her eyes locked onto Ye Cang with hatred. Then she suddenly realized something—wait a minute… this man could get close to Miss?

Wasn’t it said that any man who approached her would suffer?

Qin Junfei realized it too, which was why she told Pan Min to stand down.

Just then, her phone rang. It was Qin Caishen.

“Junfei, you must have met Mr. Ye by now?”

Qin Junfei glanced at Ye Cang. “Yes, Dad. He touched me and… nothing happened.”

Qin Caishen burst out laughing. “Hahaha! I knew it! Daughter, he’s not just my savior. He’s also the long-lost Young Master of the Qin Family—your designated fiancé. You must seize this opportunity!”

“If he can save my life, maybe he can cure your strange illness too. And since he can touch you without harm, feelings can be cultivated slowly. Just marry him first.”

Qin Junfei bit her lip. So it’s true!

Pan Min stood frozen in shock.

What did Qin Caishen just say?

This man… is the lost Young Master of the Qin Family?

And Miss’s fiancé?

“I understand, Father. I’ll marry him.” Qin Junfei said solemnly.

Pan Min was stunned. “Miss, you…”

After hanging up, Qin Junfei walked to Ye Cang and extended her hand. “Let’s reintroduce ourselves. I’m Qin Junfei, your fiancée in name. Welcome to the Qin Family.”

Ye Cang looked at her, shocked. “So you’re not Qin Caishen’s caged canary?”

“What canary?! Show some respect!” Pan Min snapped. “Miss is the number one—”

“Pan Min.” Qin Junfei cut her off in time. Pan Min begrudgingly fell silent.

Qin Junfei handed Ye Cang a document. Four bold characters at the top—Divorce Agreement.

“What’s this?”

“Marriage agreement.” She explained, “Although the Qin Family wants me to marry you, I don’t know you well. So we’ll sign a contract first. If I find you satisfactory, I’ll willingly marry you. The Qin Family agreed to this.”

“During this time, you’re not allowed to interfere in my life or expect any marital obligations. In return, I’ll help you establish yourself within the Qin Family and give you anything you want—money, status, connections…”

Pan Min’s eyes lit up. No wonder Miss agreed—it was her way of staying in control.

“What if I refuse?” Ye Cang’s expression darkened as he finally understood what was going on.

No wonder Qin Caishen was so eager to arrange housing—it was all part of this trap.

“This isn’t up to either of us. No one defies the Qin Family.” Qin Junfei replied. “But I have one question—you’re the discarded son of the Ye Family. The Qin Family brought you in to fight the Ye Family. But I don’t see your value. You just got divorced and were dumped by a woman from a minor family. If you can’t even handle that, how can you be the Qin Family’s successor, let alone take on the Ye Family?”

Her doubt wasn’t hers alone—it was shared by many in the Qin Family. It was obvious: they brought in Ye Cang to counter the Ye Family. But what made him worth that investment?

Ye Cang picked up the pen and signed his name on the agreement. “I don’t know what value I have either. But name’s signed. Whether you marry me or not, I don’t care. I’m not interested in you. As long as the Qin Family helps me find something, that’s enough.”

“Find what?”

“I need six rare medicinal herbs to bring my mother back to life.”

Qin Junfei frowned, and Pan Min gasped.

Resurrection?

Impossible!

Just then, Qin Junfei got a call from the Qin Family in Dragon City. After a brief exchange, she looked at Ye Cang, “The Qin Family asked me to tell you—the Cryogenic Preservation Center has your mother’s spot secured. But before the transfer, a funeral must be held. Don’t misunderstand—it’s for the Ye Family to see.”

“Good.” Ye Cang nodded.

True, his mother had died. No burial, no funeral—how could the Ye Family explain that? Holding a funeral made sense.

Then Qin Junfei asked with amusement, “By the way, does Gu Yuyao know?”

Ye Cang’s fists clenched tightly. His eyes burned with rage.

She didn’t even know his mother had died, let alone about the funeral.

But he no longer cared what Gu Yuyao knew. The Gu Family had nothing to do with him now. Even if Gu Yuyao died, he wouldn’t bat an eye.

“Thump!”

At that very moment, Gu Yuyao—being scolded by Gu Zhenghong—felt a sudden pain in her chest. She didn’t know why.

Must be Ye Cang pissing her off again!

She thought so as they returned home.

But in what used to be Ye Cang and Gu Yuyao’s home, there was… another man lying in bed.

Gu Zhenghong’s face turned red with rage, pointing at the man, “Who is he?!”

“Grandpa, don’t get upset. Let me explain—”

But truth couldn’t be hidden for long. Gu Yuyao knew this moment would come the minute she divorced Ye Cang.

If she wanted to be with Gao Yanqing, she’d have to get past her grandfather.

But under his burning gaze, she didn’t know where to start.

“Cough, Grandpa Gu, don’t blame Yuyao. It’s not her fault.” Gao Yanqing sat up, coughing slightly. “It’s me, Xiao Gao.”

“Oh, Xiao Gao, you’re back from abroad?” Gu Zhenghong finally recognized him as the son of their old family friend, and his expression softened slightly—though his brow remained furrowed. “What’s going on here?”

“I heard Yuyao got married. I came back to see how she was doing. But her husband didn’t take it well—he punched me the moment he saw me.”

From his tone and demeanor, Gao Yanqing exuded security. He not only shielded Gu Yuyao but also painted himself as the victim.

“Is that true?” Gu Zhenghong’s frown deepened.

He knew Ye Cang. That didn’t sound like him.

“Did you do something to wrong him?” he asked.

“Grandpa!” Gu Yuyao panicked. “I’ve been married to Ye Cang for three years. If I wanted to cheat, I would’ve done it long ago!”

Gu Zhenghong looked at her but didn’t speak.

He knew his granddaughter too well. She had always liked Gao Yanqing—only stopped after he went abroad. Now that he was back, of course her heart would stir.

“Whatever the case, I warn you—know your limits. Don’t betray Ye Cang. He just cured Qin Caishen. He might rise quickly with Qin Caishen’s support. Treat him well!” Gu Zhenghong warned her sternly.

“Got it, Grandpa…”

Gu Yuyao lowered her head, full of guilt.

How was she supposed to tell Grandpa that she and Ye Cang were already divorced?

Even worse—it was Ye Cang who filed for it…

And how could Ye Cang possibly cure Qin Caishen?

She was full of doubt. Just as she was thinking, Gu Zhenghong asked, “By the way, how’s Xiao Cang’s mother? I’ve been too busy to visit her lately.”

BOOM.

Hearing this out of nowhere, Gu Yuyao’s body jolted, as if struck by lightning. Her face drained of color…
