Chapter 3: This Isn’t a Club. This Is Practically a Den of Thieves!

Amid the commotion, someone patted Li Fan on the shoulder.

“Xiao Li, you’re with me.”

Li Fan turned around and saw a slightly honest-looking face. The man appeared to be about twenty-four or twenty-five. His police uniform hung a bit loosely on him as he grinned broadly.

“My name’s Shan Xingteng. I’ve been here three years longer than you. Just call me Brother Teng.”

“Brother Teng,” Li Fan nodded.

Shan Xingteng was one of the station’s veterans. Although he had been on the job for three years and his abilities were average, he was smooth and sociable, with decent connections.

He looked Li Fan up and down and spoke in the tone of someone experienced. “Come on, let’s grab our equipment. I’ll give you a proper rundown.”

The two collected their police gear and walked over to a half-worn police motorcycle.

Shan Xingteng swung a leg over, started the engine skillfully, and patted the seat behind him. “Hop on, junior.”

The motorcycle sputtered out of the station, and Shan Xingteng’s loud voice rang in Li Fan’s ears.

“Xiao Li, don’t be fooled by how serious Director Gu sounded just now, making such a big show of it. For grassroots officers like us, life still goes on as usual.”

“An A-level wanted criminal? Possibly armed? That’s something the elite team at the Municipal Criminal Investigation Division should worry about. Not us.”

Shan Xingteng talked animatedly. “What’s our job? Just screening! To put it bluntly, we walk the jurisdiction inch by inch. It’s about showing higher-ups we’re doing something, and maybe creating some deterrence.”

“You’re really lucky, kid,” Shan Xingteng said, a hint of envy in his voice. “When I first joined, I dealt with nothing but trivial stuff every day. Family squabbles, couples fighting, missing dogs…”

“Unlike you. You walk in and immediately hit a major case that could make the news. You’ll have something to brag about later.”

Li Fan didn’t speak. He just listened quietly.

He understood Shan Xingteng’s mindset. It was probably the most genuine mentality of most grassroots officers.

They earned modest salaries and did the hardest work. There was no need to risk their lives chasing some distant glory.

“So, junior, take some advice from your brother.”

Shan Xingteng’s tone grew serious. “When we get there, don’t get carried away. Don’t think about making some heroic contribution. We’ll just patrol honestly. If you see someone suspicious, take a second look. If something feels off, report immediately. Don’t charge forward on your own. Got it?”

“Small characters like us. Making sure nothing happens to ourselves is the biggest contribution we can make to the station.”

Li Fan found it a little amusing, but he nodded cooperatively. “Understood, Brother Teng. I’ll listen to you.”

“That’s more like it!” Shan Xingteng was satisfied.

Soon, the motorcycle entered a street and noticeably slowed down.

This was Andou Street.

One of the most chaotic and mixed streets in Huli District, Xiamen City.

A single road seemed to split it into two completely different worlds.

On the east side were densely packed urban village buildings.

Block after block of so-called “handshake buildings” were crammed together, blocking out the sky. Tangled electrical wires hung between them like spider webs.

The air was filled with the smell of cooking oil from small restaurants, the cheap fragrance of low-quality shampoo, and a faint hint of damp mold.

Migrant workers in uniforms, fruit vendors pushing carts, shirtless men walking about… all formed a chaotic yet vibrant scene.

On the west side of the road, however, it was an entirely different picture.

The pavement was wide and clean. Luxuriously decorated KTVs, bars, and upscale restaurants lined both sides.

Hostesses in high-slit qipao dresses stood at the entrances, their smiles professional and sweet.

The vehicles parked along the road shifted from worn-out electric scooters to Mercedes and BMWs.

Shan Xingteng parked the motorcycle by the roadside and pointed east. “That side is our key screening area. Lots of migrant population, messy management, easiest place to hide.”

Then he jerked his chin toward the west. “Over there is our station’s ‘key attention’ area. All kinds of shady characters gather there. Lots of trouble, but generally no wanted criminal would be stupid enough to hide there. Too conspicuous.”

“Let’s start from the east side,” Shan Xingteng said as he led Li Fan on foot patrol.

As they walked, he continued playing the role of a mentor.

“See that kid squatting at the alley entrance? Repeat thief. Been in and out of our station several times. Keep an eye on him.”

“That ‘Chuanxiang Pavilion’ over there? The boss lady is having an affair with the chef. The boss came to cause trouble last month. That place is prone to incidents.”

“And also…”

Shan Xingteng knew the area like the back of his hand.

Li Fan followed behind him. On the surface, he seemed to be listening carefully, but in reality, he was scanning his surroundings and maximizing the effect of the Identity Detection Radar.

Along the way, the radar picked up a few minor offenders with past records of “theft” and “soliciting prostitution,” but none posed any real threat. Li Fan didn’t bother with them.

Without catching them in the act, arresting them now would be pointless.

Hard to gather evidence.

Lots of effort for little gain.

However, just as Shan Xingteng was enthusiastically recounting some gossip about the owner of a foot massage parlor, an urgent alarm suddenly sounded in Li Fan’s mind.

[Ding! Detected individual involved in organized crime!]

[Ding! Detected suspect involved in organizing prostitution!]

Li Fan’s footsteps halted abruptly. His eyes sharpened instantly.

He lifted his gaze, bypassing Shan Xingteng’s nonstop chatter, and looked across the road.

There stood a bath and leisure club called “Yushui Club.”

The club’s decoration was extravagantly luxurious. The European-style entrance gleamed with gold and brilliance. Two rows of muscular men in black suits and earpieces stood at the door, imposing and intimidating.

At that moment, a fat man in a floral shirt walked out of the club with a face full of smiles. Beside him stood a well-built man with a fierce gaze and a tattoo on his neck.

Two red virtual panels instantly popped up before Li Fan’s eyes.

[Name: Xiao Chengji]

[Age: 25]

[Position: Lobby Manager of Yushui Club]

[Criminal Record: Suspected of organizing, introducing, and harboring women for prostitution; suspected of operating an illegal gambling venue.]

[Name: Cao Wenhua]

[Age: 24]

[Position: Security Personnel of Yushui Club]

[Criminal Record: Suspected of intentional injury (causing serious injury); suspected of provoking disturbances; involved in organized crime…]

Looking at the shocking charges displayed on the panels, Li Fan’s pupils contracted slightly.

Good grief.

This isn’t just a club. This is practically a den of thieves.
